Coast Guard searching for missing cruise ship passenger
Miami, Florida - A Coast Guard aircrew is searching for a missing cruise ship passenger, who may have fallen overboard, approximately 38 miles northeast of Cozumel, Mexico, Wednesday.
Coast Guard search-and-rescue coordinators in Miami received notification from the captain of the cruise ship Carnival Victory at approximately 7 pm Tuesday, stating the 44-year-old man's wife had reported him missing. The man was reportedly last seen at about 1 am Tuesday.
An HC-130 Hercules aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater was launched to conduct a first-light search Wednesday, and is currently on scene searching a 1,146 square-mile area northeast of Cozumel.
Seems this happens more on carnival than any other line. Is the decor still that bad? I thought the newer ships were better. When I was on the Sensation, I almost jumped overboard from the purple overload.

If it is Carnival and it floats....we have sailed it!
Hubby ... DIAMOND (every ship except the Carnivale)
Me ... DIAMOND (every ship starting with the Tropicale)
20 year old son ... DIAMOND (every ship starting with the Tropicale...he is the only DOUBLE Milestone under the age of 21)
24 year old son ... DIAMOND
Now why didn't the idiot wait until Saturday to jump. He wasted a half of the cruise!!!!
No, in all seriousness it is sad, but no one really knows why they jump. Alcohol is always a big factor. I can sense we are in for another summer where we here people are jumping off at least once a week or month...
Dave--The media is notorious for using the wrong photos in the news, so chill out...As for Carnival's decor, the only ship I find gaudy and over-the-top is the Valor, and it is too American for me, but it isn't stopping me from going on her--I'll just have less photo's of the ship....

sailing on the Liberty I was pointing out to my wife how difficult it is to fall overboard, I'd say unless you lean to far over your balcony it'd got to be a deliberate act of jumping overboard.

It is sad that anyone would jump or fall off of any ship. I hope for the family, that he is found, one way or another.
I will be cruising on the Valor in 17 days. I can't wait
I have saw so many pictures of the ship and I am so excited to see it in person. The designer made it it that way for a reason. I watched his video. It looks beautiful, but then again, I am from Pennsylvania in the US

Having just sailed this ship (February 2008), we too thought it would be better to jump than stay on the ship (we had a sewage leak that was a problem the entire week - with no info from the crew). Then we thought it would just be better if they sank the ship all together.
All kidding aside, this is a very sad thing. We were actually on a ship with a search, rescue and recovery and it can be very scary.
However, look at the time line again.
Passenger last seen at 1a Tuesday.
Ship arrives in Cozumel at 8a Tuesday.
Ship leaves Cozumel at 6p Tuesday.
Wife reports missing at 7p Tuesday.
Seems a little fishy to me. Why wait. Didn't they look for him to go ashore? Did he go ashore? We know the ship keeps a record (your sail & sign that gets scanned on/off the ship).
How about that Sail & Sign card - was it used anytime during this absence?
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
Safe sailing.

I just got off the Fascination yesterday - and although we had a fabulous time - I commented quite often how low the guard rails were. There was also a huge gap in between the railings.
Several times we saw kids hanging around the edge, leaning over, stepping on the first step (out of curiousity) and even small ones who could totally fit through the railings going too close to the bars!
This made me VERY nervous.
I know that hotels have regulations for the railings - don't cruise ships?
My mom recently cruised on NCL and she said the railings were never open and low.
I saw the story and the timeline and immediately thought the guy might have jumped ship at port.
That would be a sad story for his wife but I can think of worse places to disappear to than Cozumel. 8)
