Default Carnival Conquest propulsion problem

Onboard the Conquest 08/09/08 Early afternoon
The Conquest is running on one propeller as of now (sat 8/9). The rear of the ship had a vibration this morning around 11 AM, then around 11:30 the ship listed slightly. We looked over the aft railing and only one propeller is turning. The ship speed has decreased to around 14 Kts, and the math says we will not reach Galveston till around noon Sunday. ( Distance to Galveston Divided by Ship speed). An anouncement was made warning of a delay, but no real information given as yet.

Thanks for the on the scene report !

Hope folks with early flights can get on the net and reschedule to a later one.

Folks booked to sail on her after debark will be delayed as well.

This is almost what happened to us aboard the "M.S. Carnival Liberty", last November, 2007. We were on our way to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the Captian made an anouncement on the "PA" system. He said that "you might notice that we're sitting dead in the water. He also told us that our port propeller and shaft are having mechanical problems, and that the mechanics were doing their best to make the repairs. So we were delayed for approximately 4 hours.
We were so late arriving in San Juan that all tours were cancelled.
This makes the second time that we were not able to see past downtown San Juan.

Default Conquest back on full power

We got the port propeller turning around 5:30. It has been operating full since then. We are expected in Galveston around 2 hours late sunday morning. I would imagine this will create a late & hurried boarding. But, judging from embarcation a week ago, this should not be a big problem.
I just hope the fix on the propeller is permanent.
Sail on, Cruise happy

I am guessing they made it in time.

Does that ship have propellars or pods? I am pretty sure they have the Rolls Royce Pods. Pods are harder to fix because you have to take the ship out of the water.

two hours isn't so bad ---- but not docking until noon would pose a problem for a huge number of people with flights out at 1ish and 2 ish...

I was just a little late ( an hour +) for embarkation and debarkation. Nothing major. Could have been worse.

No pods on Conquest. Good old fashion propeller propulsion.

Hope all is well now.

Default Sorry I'm late

Sorry for the delay, I been catching up.
Sunday morning debarkation went well.
The ship docked around 9 AM. I think half the ship
chose to do the "self assist" thing with their own luggage.
I would imagine a lot of folks saw a two hour delay & decided
to get off as quick as they could. Not much luggage in the hallways at
midnight. Our small group was white tag "priority" & left the ship
with the end of the self assist bunch. We were off the ship before
any zones were called & the terminal looked pretty bare. Not nearly
as much luggage as I've seen on previous cruises. I'll bet the porters
didn't make half in tips as much as a normal day.
Anyhow, we were on the road by 11AM, two hours later than we expected,
arrived home (Missouri) at 10 PM.
As for the propulsion problem.....we'll never know what happened. Experience tells me Carnival would rather deny anything happened, or make up a whopper of a tale, just to keep the truth under wraps.
They have had an on-board communication problem for years.
The little fibs started before we even got to Jamaica this trip.

Sail on - Happy cruising

Hey Joe

Glad your home safe.

BTW--who was the CD? Was Capt. Massimo back? Anything unusual other than the delay?

Thanks

What kind of little fibs were there before making it to Jamaica? The last time I took this cruise, we didn't make it to Jamaica. I go in September again and I hope to make it there this time. I am glad everything went well with the propeller and everyone were safe and didn't arrive too late back to the terminal. The airlines don't wait for ships to come in usually.

Default Response

Captain Mossimo was the Captain, but I don't have a clue who the CD was. Some lady with too much energy. I quit keeping track of CD's 15 years ago. Before the advent of the "Shopping Specialist" , most of them were just snake oil salesman anyway. Now they have an assistant.
The Jamaica fib ( fib #1 ) was "You need to buy the all day shuttle wristband for $15 because no taxis will be running today" Has anyone ever been to Montego bay and NOT seen a taxi ??? This was our big joke for the day.
