Default Last of the Gala midnight buffet?

Just returned from Conquest. I'll have a review posted soon. One interesting item of note was that this was the last cruise that they will feature a Midnight Gala buffet. At least on Conquest, not sure if it is fleet wide.

They had already moved it from the dining room to the Cezanne Restaurant on Lido deck. I guess the end was coming.

I have heard rumours of its demise as well. Its a lot of work to prepare for for so little return. Yes its nice to look at but how much of it gets eaten? People gorge themselves all day and not many are hungry at midnight to make it worth it. Remember when there was a buffet every night? That got reduced to one night a week and looks like its bon voyage to the gala one as well.

So long as they don't do away with the chocolate buffet I will be okay. We never made it to midnight buffet, always in bed by then.

I think the chocolate buffet is safe.

I wouldn't mind at all with the end of the midnight buffet, I rarely stayed up that late to look at food, let alone eat at 1:00 after a big dinner...

NOw, the chocolate buffet is something else. At least thats a few hours at the mid day, I sure didn't miss that, delish!

we always eat late around 8, so we have yet to be hungry for the midnight buffet, besides the reg buffets in my opinion kinda bite, so the word buffet makes me not hungry

My guess is that it is fleet wide for any sailing after September 1st.

It would have been nice to know this up front wouldn't it? My son and daugher-in-law and granddaughter sailed with us this time (their 2nd cruise) and they were really looking forward to this. The entire "elegant evening" has always been a highlight of our cruises starting with the Captain's cocktail party, photo ops, dinner and midnight buffet. On the "elegant night" this cruise very few people dressed at all and it was a real let down. Most of the men did not even wear a tie. In fact, we have noticed on the last few Carnival cruises that the passengers are getting far too casual in their dress and behavior to the point that we feel like we are at a beach hang out bar the entire cruise.

It always blew my mind that people were eating such heavy foods at Midnight.. "hey's it's 12:30 and I'm going to bed in an hour.. Let's eat half a roasted pig and a taco!"

And I mean that sincerely!

What are cruise ships coming to? Topless decks turned into mini-golf courses, and no more midnight galas? Have we become too fat and lazy to party?!?!?!?

My favorite part of the midnight buffet was the cheese and crackers along with all of the great fresh fruits they serve. Bob

We'll have to keep all of our old photos of the Gala buffets...the big ice sculptures...and fancy cakes.
They will now have to be "remember when" pics

We try to have the early dinner so we can attend this buffet because it is so beautiful. As someone who has always enjoyed catering and entertaining, I love the presentation of the food.

Going to a buffet for some does not necessarily mean gorging. If you plan your meals throughout the day, you can certainly take a plate of cheese and veggies and a nice dessert with coffee at a late night buffet. A lot of people, enjoy the entire elegant evening and even go out and dance for a couple of hours after eating instead of gorging and going to bed.

Having food and snacks available on a cruise ship 24/7 is really set up in order to please every appetite and to have meals available at various times to please an array of passengers. Lots of people eat their meals early and lots of them eat later. You dont' have to eat everytime food is put out. In fact, I usually eat a nice breakfast including fruit and yogurt, a salad for lunch and sensibly at the dinner meal. Then, if I want to have a late night dessert or even grab a slice of pizza or a small cone of ice cream I don't feel guilty.

I hate to see people on the ships who are constantly in line with plates piled high with food and then just leave it on the plates. I don't hold it against anyone if they want to pig out and eat all they want, just don't waste it.

Why don't they set a day aside and do the Grand Gala Buffet during the day...?

Lunch on the Lido deck does not begin to compare with the Grand Gala Buffet. From my experience on the Lido Buffet it is more like the local all you can eat "coral" or as we call it "pig trough" for those who are trying to see just how much they can eat at one sitting.

The Grand Gala Buffet is a beautiful and elegant presentation. I wish they would continue it but it would be nice if it was offered on another night. It seems that everyone also tries to see how much prime rib and lobster they can eat at dinner that night, so of course they are not the least bit hungry at midnight. Of course, that usually doesn't stop most people from gorging themselves again

Do any of the other cruiselines besides Carnival offer a similar presentation?

Could the grand buffet turn in to the next thing they start to charge a fee to attend?

Just got off the Legend this sunday and they still have the Midnight buffet and the topless deck and mini-golf. Didn't think to ask if they were doing away with the buffet or topless deck.

The Legend is now the first Carnival ship to offer open seating diningroom option. If it works out they're going fleetwide. We took advantage of this option and it was great.

And like somebody else said we eat a little lite at dinner, (only 1 or two steaks or lobsters ). Catch a show, or get some casino action in. Then to the midnight buffet. And then on to the club for latenight dancing. Great for burning off midnight buffet calories!

Default Gala Buffet

On all the previous cruises I've been on, the gala buffet is not on the 1st formal nite (lobster & prime rib) but on the last formal nite. Has something changed in the past few months?

It sounds to me like they are only stopping the Grand Gala on the shorter cruises and maybe keeping it on the 7+ day cruises.

Oops, I didn't catch that your reference to the Conquest, which I know is a 7 day. When I saw the post about the Liberty, I just thought that maybe Carnival was only doing away with it on the shorter cruises.
