Default Pride Report

Pics to come soon...
Okay, so here goes… Boy there is so much to say…. I’m trying to break it down a little so it will be easier for you to skim through. Sorry It’s so long, it’s just general information, not too many details… thank goodness It wasn’t a 14 day cruise.

Embarkation:Went very well and very smooth. We started the process about 12:15 and we were on the Lido deck eating lunch at 12:50. By the time we were done with lunch our room was ready.
Our Room: 8G Extended Balcony Cabin #7196. Perfect location, I mean it couldn’t have been a better location if I picked it myself. Plenty of room for the two of us and the balcony appeared to be a bit bigger than our Cat 11 on the last cruise even though I know it wasn’t. It’s just that the extension was outward not to the side, which made for more room for us to get around. I also loved the little view blockers (I don’t know the official name) they had on either side, so that no one could look around the divider panel into your balcony. The comedian made jokes about the shower curtain sticking to you because the bathroom was so small, but actually, I felt the shower was quite roomy and you all know I’m a little bigger than the average woman. Beds were extremely comfortable, so much so we actually priced the “duvet” cover (not sure of spelling). A little pricey, but for good reason!
We won a $70 facial at the spa , actually my sister won it and gave it to me… it was one of the best hours I spent during my whole vacation…I never had a facial or massage before, he was very, very good. His name was Edwardo.
We got free jewelry, (bracelet and charm) just for visiting the Diamonds International store. You can end up with 3 free charms and the bracelet just by visiting all the stores listed in the different ports. The shoppers talk will explain all that. It was too hot, so we ended up with just the bracelet and one charm we paid $5 for.
Okay, got pretty lit at the Captains party… we found out something very important while we were there… we are Martini girls… Specifically we were fond of the Manhattan. So while we were waiting for our waitress to bring us another we were getting Whiskey Sours from the other waiters who already had them on their tray. It’s no wonder we had a great time…
Speaking of Martinis, they had a Martini party, guess who attended…. yeppers… at a bargain price we couldn’t resist. I believe they were 5.50 They poured the Martinis through an ice sculpture… it was very cool.
Okay, you’ll see pics of all this…
Past guest party was okay, but they didn’t hand out the drinks quite as often as at the captain’s party, or the food for that matter. But hey it was free so we enjoyed as much as possible.

Table mates... last cruise we had our group of 3 the whole cruise except formal night, (at a table for 9), this time, we were so blessed to find the table mates we did. There were 3 sets of sisters, two best friends who call themselves sisters and a niece of two of them… we had a blast. We hooked up several times throughout the cruise. We all exchanged emails at the end of the cruise so we could exchange photos…. the two best friends live in Concord, CA that’s the city I work in… I think they will be attending a chili cook off I’m entered in this weekend. (but that’s a whole other story.)
Anyway moving on…
Entertainment
There is so much to do that I never really had a chance to consider Kareoke until the next to the last night… I actually got up and sang a George Strait song and one our friends from our table sang too. We got a lot of compliments and they asked “where were you guys when we were doing auditions..” That was very nice. We took our picture with the Garth Brooks impersonator he was very nice. Unfortunately they have the Legends show so late that we just couldn’t stay up for the whole thing… but we did see a few, it was pretty good.
We had a lot of fun listening to the gentlemen playing piano and other instruments in the renaissance bar, and the shows were pretty good. The only entertainment I was really disappointed in was in the casino. (luckily I wasn’t in the casino for the entertainment) lol. It just seemed like he lacked a little talent and a lot of enthusiasm. He was singing ACDC at one point and I didn’t recognize it until the chorus. I actually thought he was still singing country. He did a variety of music with an acoustic guitar. Other than that all the entertainment was great.
Now about service:
Wonderful, great, and competent. Our room steward was not as good as our last cruise, but he wasn’t bad. He did what he needed to do and not much more. He was extremely friendly, but really didn’t go out of his way unless we asked and then it was no problem.
Our dinner staff table #381 deck 3 Normandy Lounge, Suni and Iwayan, excellent service and extremely entertaining. (you’ll see pics)
But the one person on the ship that really stood out for us was our drink server during dinner. His name was Rudi (for short). Starting on day 2 he had our soda’s waiting for us every night (soda cards) and always came in directly after we got there to see if we were having cocktails as well. He was very young but very knowledgeable and professional, like he’d been doing this for years. He always stopped and said hi when he saw us and if we had additional questions about different drinks, even though he wasn’t actually serving us at the time, he always took the time to talk to us.
Food
Chocolate Melting cake….. Deeeeee-Lish, enough said.
Food was quite good for the most part. There were a few items I didn’t care for but mostly I loved everything… now you can call me crazy but my favorite food during the whole cruise was the fish and chips I was only able to have once served during a lunch I had in the dining room. But most of all, the sandwich wraps made on the lido deck in the sandwich station. I would have really been in a lot more trouble if they offered that 24 hrs as they did the pizza. Speaking of pizza, it was okay. I really liked the calzone but I wished they offered it with pepperoni. Again, that would have just gotten me into more trouble. (Weight gain).
Weight gain… only gained 9 lbs in 12 days so that was very good for me, because I pretty much ate everything I wanted, anytime I wanted.
Ports
We are not physically able to really do anything other than walking, shopping or getting on a boat, so you can imagine, the ports were mostly just long hot walks. I could live without that. But that being said, we walked all around downtown in Puerto Vallarta, had lunch and got our free jewelry. And walked off a chocolate Melting cake.
Mazatlan:
We took an open air taxi to downtown, listened to a timeshare presentation and received a $50 lunch for two and a free bottle of tequila, plus free taxi transportation to and from the ship. Worked out great, but of course we didn’t buy.
Cabo San Lucas:
Our only excursion for this trip, we took the Land’s End Tour. It was extremely hot, but very beautiful. Again, when we were done, it was so hot, we looked at the shops on the pier, then headed back to the ship.
Oh yeah, when we got back to the ship at Puerto Vallarta, the air was out on the ship. Yikes… you can imagine how many people were in the pool.
Speaking of pools….
I had posted concerns about being able to get in and out of the pools because of my size and knee issues but rest assured I was able to get in and out without incident. Of course the steps could have been a little wider but we managed.
The water was really, really warm… loved it.
The service at the pool bar was really bad. We stood at the bar… she never came over to us, someone else walked up right in front of her and she helped him right away. When she was done I said…”I’m sorry, I thought the whole bar was open” (being a smart $^%^&). She said, why are you down there, come on down… I thought that’s kinda rude. I should be able to sit anywhere at the bar and order a drink, then she would fill our cups of with soda, she insisted on using the bar cups. (no one else for the entire cruise had a problem using our cups).
Then she got the order wrong. One other time I tried to order a bud light, they said they were out, and would have any until the next day.
Then one last time same bar… we bought the “special of the day” I believe they didn’t put any alcohol in it. that was the last special of the day we bought.
Cruise Director
Even though we didn’t meet him in person, he was extremely fun, (in room morning show and recordings). I loved watching him and listening to him speak before the shows etc… His name is Jeff Bronson.
Playing Cards
One thing I wanted to mention… I remember back some time ago there was something posted about a playing card being spotted on a carnival ship in a location that seemed impossible to get to. Well, we spotted three random playing cards on our ship 2 days before debarkation. Located in strange places and I guess it doesn’t mean anything, but just wanted to mention it… my sister actually picked one up (the only one we could actually get to) just in case it was some sort of scavenger hunt or contest or something. Hey you never know.
Speaking of Contests:
One of our table mates one two jewelry raffles two days in a row…. talk about lucky.
Speaking of Luck:
My sister and I played in the casino and we didn’t do two bad… I hit a $90 jackpot on quarters, and my sis hit $90 on pennies…. we didn’t come out ahead, but it was a nice chunk of change to cash in on the last day of the cruise…
About the Ship:
Beautiful, elegant, gorgeous. Smooth sailing the whole way…. It was much smoother than the Paradise… and did I mention, beautiful? I loved every inch of it, inside and out.
Oh yeah, and super duper easy to get around….. I did take my deck plans I printed at home, (which I highly recommend to anyone). So helpful in knowing which elevator went where. But there was no getting on one to go down and cross over to go back up… etc…. super easy. Love the ship…
Pearl in a box:
I posted some time ago regarding a pearl in a box… to those of you who know what I’m talking about, they did not have one on the ship. So I will try again next cruise… I could probably go online, but I think the adventure of finding it during a cruise is going to be half the fun.
Please feel to ask anything at all if I’ve missed something…. If I can I will answer anything.

Sounds GREAT,,,,but then almost all Carnival Cruises are like that! So happy you had a good time. You should have stayed up for the "Legends" show. The last act is the best! (That's Sinatra,,,,and the part that I always play) 8) What George Strait song did you sing? I do several, and they are a lot of fun to sing. I did "Shift Work" on our last cruise, and after that, everyone started calling me "Shift Work". Ah yes,,,that elusive 15 minutes of fame.
Have you booked the next one yet?

Thanks so much for the review, certainly sounds like you took advantage of every opportunity offered on and off the ship that you were interested in. I had to chuckle about your remarks regarding the issue you had trying to order a drink from the bar. In my past experiences as a single woman, 9 times out of 10, if I walk up to a bar at the same time as a man, he will be approached first by the bartender and even if he walks up to the bar after I do, he will be waited on first. The same applies to waiting in lines to be seated at restaurants, lines at auto repair shops, in movie theatres, etc. I'm so glad they have a ticketing system in my grocery store at the deli counter or I'd never eat any deli meats or cheeses. I guess, in our society, the assumption is that the male has the money and is the person "in charge". Glad you didn't let the incident slide.

Great review.. We were on the Pride in July and your review brought back lots of fond memories. I was the one who posted about the playing cards. We looked all over the ship and could not find one. Where did you and your sister spot them?? We are doing our next cruise on the Elation in Oct to Baja but in March of 09 we will do our 10th cruise to the Bahamas on the Conquest. You must try the Conquest..it is our very favorite Carnival ship. After the cruise my DH does "thumbs up " impression of Jeff all the time

In san francisco and in Las vegas... they have a little vender that sells oysters. You pick the oyster and they open it in front of you to reveal your pearl. It could be ordinary but then again, it could be black or even two pearls. It's very exciting for me and I got a big kick out of it.
I was asking if they ever did that on the ships... I was told some found them in the gift shop in a box that you buy and take with you. It comes with the tool to open your oyster and something to put the pearl in.
Anyway, they didn't have it, but I'll try again on my next cruse.

Okay, so the first card we spotted was in the atrium elevator on the floor.. immediately I was thinking... hey someone on cm was telling us about this.
The next one my sis spotted first on the ledge of a window looking out of the atrium elevators.. (obviously someone dropped in down from the supper club or somthing)
Next my sis spotted a third card and finally picked it up... She says "I just couldn't let one more go by, just in case they are doing some sort of contest or scavenger hunt" hey you never know...

Oh yeah, loved Jeff and yes we are too, doing impressions, "okay enjoy" and "eat free, eat often" are my favorties....

I was really glad to read your fantastic report since we will be boarding on the 28th. Any other little secrets we should know about???

You mentionedd the bar by the pool being "not so good" well, we had the same experience on the Liberty last year. One of the bartenders actually got sarcastic when a little older man asked her where he could smoke! They were probably the worst on the entire ship! I know to only go there if necessary

Did you check in on the Queen Mary? If so, how did that go?

On this cruise we waited a bit before checking in so we wouldn't have to wait so long in line. I guess they only use the queen mary if you do early check in. We did that last year, we were VIP's so the lines were all extremely short.
check in this time was only about 35 min. We were up on the lido deck enjoy (a crowded ) but delicious lunch!!

Oh yeah... the laundry room... convienantly located for us... however, could they make it any smaller??
Good gravy... a least make it big enough to walk around the person ironing, instead of have to crawl under the board...
My sis went to go get our laundry and these two big men in there told her the laundry basket was there's. she had to carry all the laundry back in her arms...
Okay, I wasn't going to stand for this, so I took off to the laundry room ready to rumble.... (sobber too)
When I got there they insisted that it was their sisters basket... I just camly asked if he wouldn't mind verifying that with her. I thought maybe we had the same basket and she may have unloaded and took hers back to her cabin.
He said no problem, so I followed him back and sure enough, his sister said, "that's her basket, give her back her basket"
Okay, so it was only $4.00 basket, but it was the principle, and quite frankly I didn't like my sis having to carry all that back in her arms.
don't fuss with my little sis...
All was good though, really, once I asked him to check we were okay.

Yes, first we took a van in puerto vallarta to downtown, where we searched for our free bracelet and charm, that was a good trip.
Then in Mazatlan we took an open air taxi downtown... that was nice to be in the open air, but the driver could use a driving lesson.
In Cabo, of course we took a tender to the port, and then we did the land's end tour, it was nice but the waiting time to leave was killin' us.. it was soooo hot.
When we were done, we pretty much just got back to the ship as fast as possible.

ferrangi,

It sounds like you and your sister had a great cruise. Thanks for the review.
We have never been to the Mexican Riviera, so I am really looking forward to our cruise on the Pride leaving October 5.

When I was on the Pride in 06 as I was going up the glass lobby elevator I saw what looked like a $100 bill on the outside ledge as we ascended. I assumed it was real but maybe it was a phony just for laughs. There was no way to get it to find out but it was fun looking at it every time we rode the thing.

I'm going to make it a point to search for cards when we are on the Spirit in Oct. Or maybe I should take some to leave if I don't spot any??

Yes, first we took a van in puerto vallarta to downtown, where we searched for our free bracelet and charm, that was a good trip.
Then in Mazatlan we took an open air taxi downtown... that was nice to be in the open air, but the driver could use a driving lesson.
In Cabo, of course we took a tender to the port, and then we did the land's end tour, it was nice but the waiting time to leave was killin' us.. it was soooo hot.

Was ir hard to find the DI shops? We have been in PV 3 times before (on All inclusive vacations) and have wandered downtown each time and I do not remember a DI shop....Are they in places where you have to take transportation to find them? Most of the ports we have been to already, all the DI shops were walking distance from the dock.....

Yes, the DI shop was quite a ways from the ship probably a couple of miles or so, but you could see the ship. The van took us directly to DI and it was $3 a person, worth it, very comfortable ride.

On the oustside at first the DI just looked like the corner of the next block.. it wasn't until we walked inside when I really looked like a jewelry store.

Thanks for the review. I am glad you had a wonderful time. I leave in 7 days so you really got me thinking about CHOCOLATE MELTING CAKE. I will dream about that tonight and wake up wanting some. Thanks and welcome back.
