"Freestyle" is what NCL calls it. "Anytime Dining" is what CCL calls it. And that pretty much explains it. Unlike assigned dining times, you show up when you want. Kind of like how breakfast/ljunch is. No assigned table/tablemates/waiters

Unsure how it works with "switching back and forth" on Carnival.

You can choose whatever time you want to go to dinner between 5:30 and 9:30 so you have no assigned dinner time. You also get to choose if you want to be by yourself with just your family, or with more than one family.

A friend was on NCL and didn't care much for freestlye. The better dining needed to be made by reservation early in the day. If you just walked to the dining room of your choice you may have had to wait sometime before being seated, based on table availability.

It's true that there might be a short wait to get a table on NCL, most of the times there is no line and sometimes you have to wait for 5 minutes.

As I understand it, since there is a lot more demand for traditional dining, you will want to be sure to get traditional dining, then if you wish you can switch to anytime dining. If you have anytime dining, and want to switch to traditional,,,,,you're out of luck. Bottom line, book your cruise, select traditional dining, try freestyle if you wish, then if you like it, ask the maitre 'd to swap to freestyle. If you don't care for freestyle, you've already got traditional, and you just keep it. Good Luck!

"Freestyle Dining" is the concept of and is available on Norwegian Cruise Lines. It is where you can choose between multiple restaurants and eat at the time you wish.

To have true "Freestyle" dining you need to have multiple restaurants with a mixture of non-surcharge and surcharge restaurants.

On NCL there are always a minimum of three restaurants that are non-surcharge restaurants and many other surcharge restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines and atmospheres.

The main restaurants on Freestyle are always non-surcharge and offer the standard cruise type meals.

Take care,
Mike

Very interesting.....
Are the selections the same with Freestyle compared to the standard dinning???
In other words do you get to order off of the same menu in both dinning rooms???
I kind of like that you can dine with your better half at times or choose to sit with other folks....
I remember that on Breakfast & Lunch in the dinning room you had no choice who you sat with, you were taken to a table & they filled it up...

In the two main dining rooms the selections will be the same. The other restaurants offer different cuisines, such as; Italian, Chinese, French, Spanish, etc.

In the main dining rooms, tables for two are available but often you will need to wait for those. If you are willing to be seated with others your wait will be shorter or non-existent. It is basically the same as during lunch or breakfast on traditional dining ships.

Take care,
Mike

Default I believe cannot switch back though

I believe I did read that one cannot go back and forth between choices during the week.
I could see switching from traditional to freestyle, but then could not change back.

Switching back and forth would be so hectic. It would be such a mess to be switching back and forth.

True freestyle, such as they have on NCL, does not offer any traditional dining options. According to Carnival literature, you can switch from traditional to anytime once only. Would probably be total chaos if folks went back and forth multiple times.

Yes it would make their job even more harder and it would be impossible becuase they would have to move other people to the other dining choice that don't want to be moved.

Ok, here is the deal (I know this because I'm signed up for this option on our sailing next month!!).
We are sailing on the Liberty, which has two dining rooms. One dining room will be for the traditional early/late seating dining.
The second dining room will be for Flexible dining. You just show up whenever you are ready to eat, between the dinner hours of 6:00-9:00.
The catch is that you have to commit to one option or another, you can't do traditional one night and flexible the next.
We signed up for Flexible the minute I heard it was an option; I like to eat when I am ready, not when the clock strikes "Dinner".
We always ask for a table for two and don't mind having different servers each night. There is a chance we might have to wait for an available table, but I'll be on vacation; I'm not in a hurry!
The other bonus to Flexible (in my eyes), if we decide we WANT to eat at, say 8:30, we can call and make a reservation in advance, if we chose.
Some people love traditional with the same tablemates and the same servers each night; we don't, so it's Flexible for us!
When I get back, I'll post on how well it actually worked (or didn't)!

Some people say when you make a reservation for the time you can also tell them who you want your server to be.
