Default Carnival Freedom Review

We sailed on the new Carnival Freedom to Cozumel, Costa Rica and Panama. The cruise left on a Saturday and sailed until the following Sunday. We stayed at a hotel in FLL on Friday - flying in early due to previously almost missing the ship by a delayed flight. We stayed at FLL airport north which was a great hotel as it was near the port - had shuttle service to and from airport and to and from port the next a.m. They had a great continentinental breakfast, so we slept in late that morning and had a breakfast and then they transported us over to the terminal around noonish. The previous night, they also shuttled us to a marina where we had a wonderful dinner and relaxing afternoon awaiting the big day to embark the new ship. Saturday came and we were transported to the ship without incident. We had VIP embarkation since I am now a platinium carnival member and I found that the embarkation staff for VIPs were pretty disorganized. The computers were down and I had to get my Sail and Sign card from the pursers desk after getting on ship, but it wasn't that bad. All went fairly smooth as everyone was so nice. So now we are on the ship - a new ship - Carnival Freedom. It was absolutely beautiful (unlike what I heard in reviews). We were not able to go to our stateroom until about 1 pm, but immediately went on the Lido and ate some lunch and had a drink (the ship special). Our stateroom was a balcony and an excellent location - one floor down from the Lido right by the elevators! All we had to do is walk up one flight and wammo ------- Lido right there, drinks, coffee, etc. Very convenient!

Our stewart's name was Samuel and very nice. The rooms were kept up nice each morning and night however we had the same little towel animal 3 nights in a row. Not that thats a big deal. We also had neighbors that smoked on the balcony which migrated to our room and balcony, but it was tolerable and nothing much we could have done about it.

The size of the ship was huge - with 3400 passengers and 1500 crew. You didn't notice it was this large until the mornings where it seemed EVERYONE ate at the same time for breakfast. We learned to go to the dining room as it was much less hectic and food was the same. This was expecially helpful port days when you had early excursions. The ship was clean and I enjoyed the fact that in all areas of food, they had the little hand sanitizers. The decor was ok - I had expected worse since I had heard bad reviews, but I found it very beautiful and colorful. The sea side theatre was great with movies and concerts - and football games. The movies they played were the Transformers and I am legend. We would go to the Lido at night with pillow and blanket and make ourselves comfortable to watch the show. It would have been better with popcorn - but that wasn't offered. The last show, I am legend played and was cut off in the last 10 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were all in shock of this!

The food was ok , not great as previous cruises. I think they are getting more elaborate on their foods and not the everyday foods. I was hoping for a simple bowl of spaghetti - lol - but wasn't even offered. They did have soup bar daily with fancy soups, but I have to admit the dining room food was a lot better than the lido deck. Service was excellent! We didn't go to the supper club as I had had gastric bypass surgery a year ago and food really wasn't the priority on my agenda. What I ate, was great though. As usual, they had ice cream with trimmings every day which was nice (nuts, chocolate syrup, etc). The gala is no longer and each night they had a place on the promonade deck to get cheeses, fruits, pastries, etc. This was nice! Oh I also got 'salmon' on the lido when asked. You can get the chicken breast or salmon, but just have to ask for it. They had a tandoor corner, sorta of mexician corner, deli, pizza, grand buffet with daily international foods.

We were on the Veranda deck - room 8343 and it was excellent location. One floor down from the Lido, right by the elevators. We were able to easily run up, get a cup of coffee in the a.m. of wanted and run back down. Stateroom was kept clean by the stewarts, very comfortable - I have to admit the Carnival Comfort Bed is to die for! OMG if I could have taken the pillow home, I would have. :-) The room was cool and comfortable. They were well stocked with shampoo, soap and a hairdryer. Along with that, we had a refrigerator, which we only used to cool our wine down. We only saw the steward once or twice, but never really looked for him. The fact that you could check your folio on the TV was also great (not offered on smaller ships). Clean towels, robes, etc were offered throughout the stay.

I can't say anyone went over and beyond - but all staff was friendly, willing to help and did great jobs. I have no complaints on any of that! We did talk to about 3 or 4 and asked them general questions - how long they have been on, etc. All were loving to answer any questions and seemed to enjoy their jobs.

This was my platinium cruise - having sailed 12 times total but only 10 counted for carnival since they started the platinium stuff, but the entertainment seems to be the same cruise after cruise. I know its hard to come up with different things, but I guess I'm just tired of the same ol same ol. The last show of the cruise "Ticket to Ride" was also seen on my last few cruises on the FAntasy. I was just hoping for something 'new' I did enjoy the fact that they changed the 'red, white and blue' teams up. Personally, I think its kinda trivial, but thats JUST MY OPINION! They had the deck party one night and put the 3 teams at different parts of the ship, only to join on the Lido for a huge party. This was FUN and the assistant cruise director was just totally great. They have music on the Lido, but I wish they would have speakers to the music going around the sides of the ship to the back also since its so crowded and you have to get chairs where you can.

We didn't use the childrens programs, but they obviously did a great job as with over 250 kids on ship, we were not disturbed by any of them. :-)

Ports of call were Cozumel, Costa Rica and Panama. In Cozumel we went to Xcaret. This was a GREAT place, however the little ferry ride up there wasn't so great as EVERYONE was getting sick! It was insane, but the park itself was fantastic. Lots to do and of course not enough time to do it in. I wish we would stay longer in this port!

Costa Rica - we went horsebackriding. This was a great and a wonderful excursion since it had been so long since I had been on a horse. We stopped midway through the excursion and walked around where the guides showed us some sloths in the trees and some poison frogs for some pictures. Beautiful scenery - but as usual, we were not on the horses long enough for me. . We then went back to the ranch where we were offered mango juice, and fruits (Oh these were sooo good). They had a little souvinere shop there also. We got back in time to shop a little in the little flea market style shops right off the ship. Costa Rica, like Panama is a place where you MUST do excursions or you will be back on the ship within the hour. Nothing to do right outside the ship!

Panama - we went Kayaking which was nice and beautiful (and a great workout) and then they stopped by the panama locks to show us the locks. I had been through the locks before but my daughter hadn't, so I was glad she was able to see it. It rained the whole time we were in this port - but you can't help mother nature! Not to much is offered to do in this port unfortunately.

I enjoyed the fact we had 2 sea days at the very end. This flew by!! and finally some sun where we could enjoy the Lido deck.

The spa I must say was awesome also. The first night, we put our name in a hat for a drawing and won 1/2 off a massage. Then at the end of the cruise, they had a 'bid' box outside the spa where you could 'bid' on your choice of services offered. I bid on 2 items and got both of them - where I gave one to my daughter (the hot stone massage) and I kept the ocean wrap. Wow........this was an awesome 2 hour adventure and I walked out like a wet noodle. Jessica in the spa can give the BEST massage!!! The exercise room was great and I would walk daily on the treadmill.......it the steam room.......and then the whirlpool! Oh what a life!!

All in all - the trip was a wonderful trip. I was platinium as mentioned before and this was great ----- priority boarding and on the ship, they sent one night some canapes which were delicious and the second formal night they sent some pastries. The BEST thing about platinium is that each day I sent my laundry out - which came back the next clean, dry and folded and pressed. It was GREAT!!!!!!! We also did a galley tour and could also have priority debarkation which I didn't know! We were flying out of the FLL airport - and could have actually made a 11 a.m .flight since they let people off the ship at 6:30 am.!!! Instead (not knowing) I had a 5 pm flight - and after flight delay after delay ended up not getting home until 1 a.m. and had to be at work for 6 a.m. It as a LONG day at the airport. I'll know better next time!! FLL airport is ok ------- Miami airport is a different story!

Well, I think I said everything - but sure I missed a little. If anyone has ANY quesitions -don't hesitate to ask! I'll be more than happy to help with anything!! Now, I'll save some money and patiently await my next cruise --------- to Alaska on Carnival Spirit.

Oh, we each brought on a bottle of wine. I think we could have bought 3 or 4 bottles as no one cared - or even checked. In the luggage, I had some alcohol wrapped nicely and left it out on the counter in the room with no problems. Yep, I did buy a few mango dacquaris ----- but mainly drank what I bought. :-)

I also am packing LESS next trip!!!!!!!!! With the wonderful wash service I get now, I can cut back by half!!

Great review Cheryl. So glad you had a good time. How much weight have you lost, and do you regret getting the surgery?

Hey girl...

did you make it to the meet and greet on Lido????

I met so many great folks. We had a lot show up from Cruise Critic...but I had met so many other great folks on the Splendor B2B...my brain was overloaded.

We had a great time on the Splendor and the Freedom.

They did not have a karaoke host on the Freedom so the social hosts (now called Entertainment Staff) were taking turns. Some were better with the equipment than others.

TJ was great and it was so much fun singing on Lido on the Big Screen!!

I did not do the Legend Show this time. I have done it 3 times this year and we had a lot of first time cruisers.

I loved the way Todd had the Platinum folks stand up and announce the number of cruises they had been on during the Past Cruisers Party. DJ (our 17 year old with autism) was so thrilled stand up and say 27 cruises!!

He got a ship on a stick for being the youngest Milestone Rewards Member onboard.

Papa T (Michael) was excellent by the Casino. He had such range. Since we sing the songs in just about the same key...it was a little harder to harmonize with him and stay in my range. And the few solos I tried with him were not in my key. But we still had a great time.

I can't speak to the food, since I was on a restricted diet with this gall bladder mess. I could only eat low fat. But I still found plenty to munch on. (Lost 2 pounds...woo hoo)

Our Cabin Steward was ok.

For some reason this cruise was just a blurrr....perhaps because we had just gotten off the other 2.

Can't wait for January 1st!!!

Luanne - yes I do feel like a new person! Its so nice to be able to fasten the seat belt in a plane!! Not that the seat belt would help in the event of a crash...

lhp - you were on the cruise!!! Nope, didn't go to the meet and greet. Guess I missed that one. Yes, I thought the Karokee on the big screen was kinda cool. We were the ones with the pillows and blankets laying on the lido watching the movie prior to that. :-)

Spencer - I stayed at the Fort Lauderdale Airport North. 134.00 for the night - very close to the airport with transfers with the hotel. Was able to check in by 1pm. Very comfortable room - exercise room downstairs - continental breakfast (but had buscuits with white gravy..yum yum) - and transfers anywhere within 5 miles. I would definitely stay there again. Oh...and they had a Big Lots, food store and other stores along with a licquor store right there within walking distance.

That is great that it was close to so may places. When we stayed in a hotel by the Miami Airport for a cruise out of Miami. It was kinda far away from the cruise port (10-15 min) and no stores were close to it! So you got a really good hotel!

We stayed at the Hampton Inn - Plantation

I don't know what the rates are because we used points for both nights.
We stayed there the night before our Splendor B2B and then the night between the Splendor and the Freedom.

They allowed us to park our car there for 14 days for free..since we were staying there 2 nights. They shuttled us back and forth for free.

There is no fenced parking...so your car is "exposed" (so to speak)...but we came back and everything was fine. We did not leave anything in the car to be stolen...

They also allowed us to check in at 10AM since we were getting off the cruise ship...we did not have to wait until 3pm.

Wonderful folks!!

Did you try the Fish and Chips up on deck 10. They make a seafood
Bouillabaisse that is excellent.

I asked the guy behind the buffet line - the one cutting the ham. It took about 5-6 minutes, but it came out nice and hot with carrots and broccoli and a large piece of salmon. :-) Didn't try the chicken breast - but will next time. :-)

Thanks! We will definately try to order some.

Any other 'inside' secrets I should know?

Where did you watch the sail away?

Did the muster drill go smoothly?

Yes the drill went smooth - and I know its a MUST do - but do you really think things will be so organized if the ship is going down. But, it a law ---- and we obey. However, I have found that if you take your time to get there, you will be in the front row - and get out sooner. :-)

We watched the sail away from our balcony. :-) It was great!!!

No other tips that I can think of - but if you have any questions, just ask! The salmon and chicken breast wasn't a inside tip however, its written on the menu on the Lido - in REAL SMALL PRINT...lol

I am happy you enjoyed the Freedom. She is a great ship. I just wish the lights weren't as huge and the statues weren't blue.

The Splendor has the same decor colors sanes the blue. Also, the lights aren't huge disks.

The ship was not over the top like some of Carnival's other ships. Some of their ships have so many lights.

You have been on the Splendor. Is the Spendor toned down?

Default OMG can't wait

I also read the reviews and was worried but thanks to you I'm all excited. We leave on the 10 Oct 09 YAHOOO. This will be our 10th cruise with Carnival. You mentioned some benefits you get. Does Carnival send us something in the mail to show that its our 10th or do we show up as per normal. In fact we were told that their not going to send tickets but to print out our fun pass and use that; so I guess we'll still have to stand in the lines.
