Default XUNANTUNICH vs ALTUN HA?

Any opinions as to which is a better Ruins Tour?

I did Altun HA and river , my oldest son did the Altun Ha and city tour. We had a guide "Donna" on our boat. If you get her "RUN" to another boat. It took the whole day no time for shopping for trinkets etc. She man the boat driver stop for every bird, crocodile, iguana, and invisible manatee on the river. The ruins were nice but because of her we only spent 45 min. there. My son on the other hand was at the ruins for almost 2 hours.[/b]

We did Xuantunich 4 years ago. Was great. I highly recommend it. You are able to climb on the ruins (unless that has changed). My only complaint is the ride to the ruins is longer than the advertised 45 minutes. Take snacks. The bus driver stops at a "local" road side vendor for trinkets. The day we were there we were 1 of 3 tours so it was still quiet. On the way back to the ship we stopped at a local "resort" I wouldn't call it that. Apparently it is a hotel and there was a little local craftsman shop (got some nice picture frames made of local wood). The lunch they provide was local fare. I can be a bit picky about some food. But this was AMAZING. Alcohol was extra, but my DH wanted to try the beer (we still have the bottle).
From my lengthy response, you can tell I would do this again. Can't compare to Altun Ha as we haven't been there yet! Which ever you choose ENJOY!

never been to Altun Ha but have been to Xunantunich.
It was a great trip....a bit long though...first to debark...last to return to the ship. Lovely area up a hill across the Mopan river via hand cranked ferry. In 2006 at least we could climb the castle...very much worthwhile. We also stopped for lunch in an exotic locale.

I've been to both and while they are both interesting, Xuanantunich is far better. It's a much larger site and the main temple, El Castillo, is amazing. Our tour included lunch at a local restaurant in the town of San Ignacio on the way back to Belize City. Ship's tour was $89 and worth every dollar in my opinion.

We are in port 8-5 and tour says 7 hours - do you think we'll be rushing??? Taking the in laws on this one and "Hurry Up" isn't an option...

If you are doing it through the cruise line - don't worry about the time. That is the great thing about booking through the ship. They will wait for you! Enjoy

My vote is for Altun Ha because the Altun Ha and City Tour is around 4.5 hours long leaving you plenty of time to do some shopping.

Xuni is big, but much of the time is spent traveling to and from. Altun ha is less than an hour away.

my tour wasn't rushed, just long. We spent a great deal of time on the bus, but that wasn't so bad in that it affords the opportunity to see the real Central America.
At the river's edge were Mayan people selling hand carved slate artwork....I purchased two Mayan deities.

okay well the long bus ride leads to a new question... we had a long bus ride to the ruins in Costa Maya but the woman accompanying us Carolina made it very entertaining for us. Is the Xunantunich ride like that or do they just leave you to your books, ipods, etc...

Oh they kept us entertained alright. We learned all about Hattiesville the town that appeared after Hurricane Hattie hit the coast. We learned about the differing ethnic groups which comprise the mosaic. She talked of agriculture. Bored? No way. 8)
