Default Change to Capt's party ?

Is this old news? Did I miss this?

Found it on Johns blog.....

"We wanted to do something special for our guests towards the end of the voyage to thank them for spending their vacations with us so developed the concept of a farewell appreciation party with the ship’s senior officers and complimentary cocktails. At the same time, we are continuing to offer the captain’s celebration on the first elegant night but have modified and expanded it to feature discounted drink pricing for a two-hour window not only at the location of the captain’s party but all along the ship’s promenade as well. These adjustments not only retain the one hour of complimentary cocktails but add a second party with the ship’s senior management and a two-hour period of discounted drinks."

Ah Ha! This explains some other threads I'd seen about the Captains Cocktail Party. The misunderstanding was that it would no longer feature any complimentary cocktails at all. Apparently, if I read this right, they still have the regular complimentary drinks for an hour, then add a two hour window of discounted drinks. Actually, pretty smart IMO. They get you "primed" with the free drinks, then you buy drinks after that. It's so good, they repeat it later in the cruise! Hats off to Carnival. A very smart move, and a win-win deal for everyone.

If you are really thirsty and have second seating you can attend both one hour free drinks however you will find a wait at every bar that is popular.

Sky... I'm not sure if you are reading it incorrectly or if it's me... here's what I'm reading....
The first elegant night they will have the usual Captains night with 1 hr of complimentary drinks....
Then later on during towards the end of the cruise they will provide a Farewell/thank you party with a 2 hour window of discounted drinks...

I'm not reading that it's 1 hr free w/2 hrs of discounts (on same night) but that's what is sounds like you are reading and then they would do it twice.

Can anyone set me straight....?
Because, I'm really likin' Sky's version....

An hour of free drinks gives me enough time. As long as I get the drinks two at a time.

OKay, after reading and re-reading.... I think Sky is right? Basically is looks like the equivalant of 2 captains partys with an addition period of discounted drinks on each night. Whoo Hooo.

Kat, Last captains party I was drinking beer with a Martini back... I just though it was a shot of booze... that's pretty much what it tasted like....

Maybe I'm just too much a skeptic but I am not sure this means an extended time period or as Ferangi first thought an addtional night at reduced cost.

Maybe thats why so many posted to Johns blog about clarification. Still needs some it seems to me.

I think you are right about the need for clarification. I read it still another way. The original Captains party would have the 2 hours of discounted drinks with none free and the second would have the one hour of complimentary drinks. Who Knows????? Guess we will find out on the next cruise.

I still read it the same. Looks like two parties, both with one hour of free drinks, and both with the expanded 2 hour period of 1/2 price drinks. If that's wrong, it's REALLY worded badly!

These adjustments not only retain the one hour of complimentary cocktails but add a second party with the ship’s senior management and a two-hour period of discounted drinks."

Okay last time I cruised there were two cocktail parties. One for early seating and one for late seating. There were both about an hour long. So if I understand this correctly. The early seating captian's cocktail party will have one hour free drinks and two hours half price drinks. Then the late seating cocktail party will do the same thing. BTW if you have late seating you can attend both parties.

I heard you can order whatever drink you want at the Capt. party. I always thought you were stuck drinking those nasty whiskey sours and the blue margies or whatever. You have to imagine the liquor is the bottom of the barrel stuff. Can anyone confirm this?

I can confirm with a picture. This is my hubby holding two long island ice teas at the captian's cocktail party. These drinks were not on the tray, my hubby ordered them. Yes they were free. This was in April 26, 2008- May 10, 2008.

In the replies area:
Peg Asked:
Dear John,
PLEASE REPLY
I hate to bring this up after the drunk blonde made a fool of herself, but there is a post on CC that the drinks at the Captains Party are no longer free but are $1.00 off the regular price. Is that information true?
John Says:
Hello Peg
Well, the thread you are referring to on Cruise Critic is correct but then not correct. Here’s the latest: We wanted to do something special for our guests towards the end of the voyage to thank them for spending their vacations with us so developed the concept of a farewell appreciation party with the ship’s senior officers and complimentary cocktails. At the same time, we are continuing to offer the captain’s celebration on the first elegant night but have modified and expanded it to feature discounted drink pricing for a two-hour window not only at the location of the captain’s party but all along the ship’s promenade as well. These adjustments not only retain the one hour of complimentary cocktails but add a second party with the ship’s senior management and a two-hour period of discounted drinks. I will keep you posted though.

Wow now I'm confused. Is there now only one cocktail party with free drinks for both dining times? Then a 2 hour discounted price? Or are there still two cocktail parties for one for each dining room seating with 2 hour windows after the party? If there is only one cocktail parties for both dining times it could get pretty crowded in there.

My guess is before it is all said and done Carnival will stop the ordering of any brand whiskey such as Grey Goose and other specialty drinks. The more we talk about this we are only hurting ourselves as there are many Carnival executives that look at this site for information. We were told at a meeting on Holland by the hotel mgr. he looks at tyhis site each morning to find the complaints and what we are talking about in this posting.

Okay, I just read a different take on this...

Someone said they heard that there were no more free drinks at the captains party, but they did have $1.00 off drinks.
they did however have free drinks during the farewell party...

You know offering free drinks on the last night of sailing isn't the smartest move imho.
I mean I really wanted to see the legends show last year and I was just too darn tired to stay up that late... and especially since I have to drive the next day...
That being said, I'm not saying I won't drink on the last night, but once I get past the freebies... I may not buy anymore...

By the way, does anyone know.... is this in liue of the "Past Guest" party?? I sure hope not... I've been adding up all the parties with free drinks so I know how to budget my booze money...

Oh and by the way... my boss just got back from the Splendor oh yeah duh... she gave me the capers to look at...
Here's what I found out by looking at the Capers for the Splendor the week of July 5th 2009...

First I did not see anything regarding a farewell party and my boss did not hear anything about it...
Second, here's how it reads directly from the capers regarding Captains Party:
Captain Pagano cordially invites you to his Welcome Aboard Receptions. Join your fellow guests for complimentary drinks, music and dancing.
(lists the times, then is goes on to say)
IMPORTANT
In order to provide the best possible sercie for all our guests, the bar waiters will be passing around pre-poured wine, champagne and beer - ONLY However... if you wish to have something different, it will be our pleasure. Feel free to go to any of the bar counters in El Morocco, Disco, The Cool & The Wine Bar and our bartenders will be more than happy to oblige.

Except for the times listed, that's word for word... it doesn't say anything about discounts.
Just thought I would share....

We just walked off the Ecstasy this morning, so here's the latest on 5 day cruises anyway.

No change!

Not that I could detect anyway. There were 2 parties, as usual, one for early and one for late diners. Drinks were the same as always and yes, you can order from the bar. Nice dance music and an address by the captain.

We went to our early party, ate dinner and came back for the second party, too - so we could dance, of course Lots of wonderful dancing with daddy's and little girls. Very sweet.

The following day was the repeaters' party and again, there were no changes that I could notice - maybe. They were serving only champagne and I think it's been that way for a cruise or two but not positive. I don't know if you could order other beverages as I was happy with champagne. Again, dancing and presentation by the CD. No gifts from all the departments or for the person who has sailed the most, just one drawing for a very nice bottle of champagne.

Happy to answer any questions.

Okay, Okay...This may be a rumor. (my disclaimer
I heard that this change Captparty/Farewell Discount party thing was presently just being done on a trial basis on the Valor. Kind of a test-market thingy. May or may not be rolled out to the rest of the fleet.

My understanding was no change to the original capt. party, but the later party was a discounted-drinks and 2hr window type. Again, I could be wrong.

Last cruise was Holiday 5day in Feb. No changes. Free drinks x 1 hr at Capt and Past guest parties. I drank PLENTY of the ones on the tray so can't attest to whether or not you could get call drinks.

Next cruise isn't until September (boohoo) so I'll be looking for OP experience to hash it all out

This was on John's blog yeaterday(July 20):

Tammy Asked:
Hello, can you please clarify the info regarding the two parties on the ship. First the Captains then the Farewell….

Do they still offer complimentary drinks for 1 hr then they added 2 hrs of discounted drinks?

And this is basically done twice on the ship? Is there a difference between the two parties?

Is this something in effect right now? (Sept we sail on the Splendor)
Our board is a little confused; I’m hoping you can clear this up for us.
Thanks,
Tammy

John Says:
Hello Tammy
Let me help you get unconfused.
1. Every Carnival ship except the Carnival Valor continues to hold the regular cocktail parties with complimentary drinks served at 6:15pm and 7:15pm. The Carnival Valor meanwhile does something a little different.
Happy Hours
5 – 6 pm
7 – 8 pm
Served on the first elegant night along the entire Promenade Deck.
On the last sea day:
Fun Farewell (Free Drinks)
5 – 6 pm
Again severed on Promenade deck
This is being done as an experiment and although it is proving to be very popular we have yet to decide if it will be something we will place on other ships so my guess is that the original parties will be held during your cruise but if that changes I will let you know.

I wonder if I can ask Host Mach and Kuki to post this and my reply to my friend Melissa above on the boards so the correct information is available to all that read them.

Thanks Tammy and if you have a follow up question please let me know.
Best wishes
John
