I have been to the Pirates of Nassau. It would be a good excursion for a 5 year old, and you as well, it is very informative. However, it is only about 8 blocks from the pier, and about 2 behind the straw market. If the walk would not be a concern save some money and walk.

If your kids like animals, I would recommend Ardastra Gardens and Zoo.
I've done both.
The Pirates of Nassau just has some artifacts in cases and some diaromas with Mannequins strewn throughout.
It was slightly interesting.
Ardastra gardens was a blast.
It is a small zoo, but different, as they let the Flamingos from the Flamingo show, walk about the zoo freely, after the show is over.
The marching Flamingo show was very entertaining.
The best part was feeding the Lory Parrots. (you hold out bits of fruit and these small parrots land on your arms, hat, etc... while they eat from your hand.)
I think they have 2 or 3 times they do this.
Ardastra has a few big cats, lots of birds, lizards, meerkats, etc....
I think any kid who enjoys animals would have a fun time, being able to get up close with the animals at this small zoo.
This over-grown little boy sure enjoyed the Pirates museum !
*I took a tour which also included 2 forts ( Fort Fincastle and Fort Charlotte).... called " Pirates of Nassau & Historic Highlights"
Doing the Forts on your own is easy enough.
Fort Fincastle is the castle on the top of the hill slightly to the left as you dock. (15-20 walk)
It is free to enter.
There are quides up there who work for tips.
When you go up there, it has an amazing view of the island and especially Atlantis and the pier area.
The amazing Queen's Staircase is near the foot of the fort and leads down to the street below.
Fort Charlotte is right on the way to Ardastra gardens.
(Fort Fincastle and the Queen's Staircase was better.)
