Default Carnival Legend Collides with Enchantment Of The Seas

Breaking news from Gene Sloan at USA Today - in Cozumel this afternoon, the Legend was leaving port when strong winds caused the ship to collide with the still-moored RCI ship Enchantment Of The Seas. No injuries reported and it it appears the damage is cosmetic. Both ships have been cleared to resume their itineraries. Read more here: http://www.usatoday.com/travel/cruis...=68500121.blog

Hey Ya'll!

Just got back from the Legend today! My Cabin was located rather close to where we hit the Enchantment of the Seas! It was pretty freaky but never felt like we were in much danger. I just remember laying on my bed and turning towards the window and saying to my friend...WOW look at the RCL ship! It then occured to me that we were REALLY REALLY close! We then went out on our balcony and saw us hit just a few cabins down! The scariest thing were the sparks that flew (not many but enough to be a little nervous).

The Staff and Captain did an AMAZING job throughout the whole situation! It could have had a much different outcome and thankfully it didn't!

What a crazy week. In addition to the "collision" there were 3 emergency medical evac's in the 1st 3 ports plus another medical evac.

Still a wonderful cruise! I am sad to be home! The PCD has officially sunk in!

Take Care
Ashley

Ashley thanks for the eye witness account. That is sad abot the Medical evac's I hope those people are okay. The cure for PCD is to book another cruise quickly.

John Healds report from the bridge says the CD made an announcement for all those along that side of the ship to move away.

"The captain was fighting the 50 knot winds with all his might using the thrusters and engines at full power. He was calm……….but at the same time you clearly see the look of concern and anguish in his eyes as he battled the elements. But I think he knew that this was one battle he wasn’t going to win and so he told Jen to make an announcement to have all the guests standing on the port side open decks and balconies to leave the area immediately and head back inside or to the middle or starboard side of the vessel………Jen made this announcement calmly and clearly and it’s a good thing she did………….because moments later we touched…"

Was the announcement broadcast in the hallways or , as I would expect, via ALL speakers, including the ones in the cabins?

I have to imagine that since you went onto your balcony you did not hear the announcement.

There are several pictures that a passenger took who is a commentator at the end of the article from the link above. If you copy and paste his link and then click on the albums button you can see his pictures. Really good pictures.

The link posted by the commentator does not resolve. Perhaps you could PM it to us?

**Correction...the link has a space in it that prevents it from resolving....It works w/o the typo.

I just passed by the Tampa port area and it appears that Legend is still there; she should have sailed yesterday.

The damage must have been somewhat more than cosmetic and I wonder if this weeks cruise was cancelled????

Dave, wasn't the ship under a pilot's control leaving port?

Phil & Liz -

We didn't hear the announcements until after we hit. They apparently were only broadcast in the hallways and they didn't "flip the switch" to the balconies or the cabins (that we could hear) until after the fact. Not sure if they realized that or not at 1st but again they eventually did get the announcements into the cabins and balconies. We could hear the RCL announcements though.

I was in a 7A obstructed view cabin on the 5th floor (5180) so we were set in a little bit and protected quite a bit by the lifeboats directly below us (we could reach out and touch the top of the boats). If we had a normal balcony cabin I am sure we would not have felt as "safe."

Though I felt it was handled well it wasn't quite as "calm" as John made it sound on the blog. I know I was surprised at how long it took for them to make an announcement over ALL of the loud speakers not just in the hallways.

That should probably be brought to John's attention. Something like this should be an "all ears" announcement.

Does anyone get the irony of the fact that a Carnival ship collided with the ship of it's biggest competitor?
