Default CENTURY : Nice but Not Impressed !

Did I miss something while cruising the highly rated CENTURY to the
western caribbean Aug 19 - 26 ? I could swear the dining room service
was better on the MONARCH I sailed on in Aug 99. My cabin (5005)
wasn't that much larger than the cabin (2082) I had on the MONARCH. While the storage space was ample the bathroom was about the same size. The port hole was useless because it was recessed so far
into the ship's outer hull it was as if I were in an inside cabin. The
little details of the ship's construction made the difference between a
passenger friendly ship and little inconveniences made that much more
conspicuous. As clean and well maintained as the CENTURY is the
layout of the MONARCH was more functional for the first time cruiser.
The two story dining room with it's aft location was just as much a
curse as it was stately. The CENTURY is not at all a bad ship with
well appointed interior and decorations. It means there's much more to a successfull ship design and function than just using expensive looking materials and furnishings. While I did enjoy myself , only my second cruise, it has increased my awareness of the importance of the ship's physical details to the overall satisfaction of the cruise experience. Eventhough the atmosphere on the CENTURY exuded "quality " for the most part, it in of itself did not help me in my " exceeding expectations ".

Have sailed the Century many times. Sounds to me like you had an "off" sailing, which can occur on any ship. Had a group of over 100 people on her in Europe last October, as an example, and had not one complaint. Also, sounds like you had one of those awful Cat. 8's forward (similar cabins exist on the Sovereign Class ships too). You get what you pay for (even on Celeb). As a general rule, though, Century cabins are ALL 170+square feet, which cannot be said of the Monarch until you reach high level Categories. The showers, too, are the width of the bathroom... a luxury not found on the Monarch either. And. you'll have to go some on newly built ships to find a dining room located in other than the stern area of a ship, for a bunch of reasons.

Century consistently delivers an exceptional cruise product. Sorry that you did not get to experience it. As this was only your second cruise, hope that in the future you again get to try the Celebrity product with better results.

The original poster failed to mention the DR food thing. Something most first time Celebrity cruisers are interested in. I was on RCL Grandeur last Oct and was somewhat disappointed in the dinners. They were good but certainly not as special as was the ship itself. The ship was truly stunning. Staterooms were small but very well laid out for function. Shower is the brunt of many jokes of course. Don;t think the Centrum or the Solarium could be improved on. And the theater was great. From many readings about Century, cabins are much larger by about 25% and showers are roomy to avoid fighting with the shower curtain. Most experienced cruisers rave about the food on Celebrity and surprised you didn't mention that. Also understand that the decor aboard Celebrity ships is understated elegance and service is a little more formal and reserved. REally looking forward to my Sep cruise on Century and hope for the best. However, I know that each sailing can be a little different and up to me to make the most of whatever is presented. Also, how was the entertainment on your sailing?NeTiZeN wrote:
