Default Cruise to Cabo San Lucas, etc - need to sell ASAP!

So yes, this is totally last minute - the cruise leaves this Sunday, 1/20 from Los Angeles. My husband, myself, my mother-in-law and father-in-law are all booked for this cruise on Royal Caribbean, but my mother-in-law had a heart attack this week and is in the hospital - so we have to cancel. Royal Caribbean won't refund our money (we, of course, didn't buy the insurance option).

If you're interested, please let me know ASAP. It's a 7 day cruise. $574 per person. My number is 678-640-2206.

Thanks!
Cameron

First, the bad news: I think that you cannot change all of the names on a booking after final payment. The cruise line would regard that as a cancellation and a new booking.

There is good news, though. Although Celebrity will not refund your money, Celebrity probably will credit most of your fare toward a future cruise if you cancel your scheduled sailing due to a medical emergency. Note, however, that your travel agent may have to talk to a supervisor in Celebrity's call center to get this approved. Also, you will need to follow up with documentation from your MIL's physican of her medical situation.

Norm.

I am sorry to hear about circumstances. I believe that some cruise lines will let you change the names for a fee but I am not sure about what Celebrity's policy is. Another problem that you will encounter in selling your tickets at this late date is that part of the 9/11 security procedures require all cruise lines to freeze the passenger manifest somewhere around 48 hours prior to the sailing time. I am not sure of the time limit but I know there is one.

As Norm said you can try calling Celebrity but I would be surprised if they would refund your ticket price. I would not get your hopes up too much on that one because if cruise lines would refund your money for illness because you had not purchased insurance, then there would really be very little reason for anybody to purchase the cruise insurance in the first place.

I hope your mother-in-law is doing better and you are able to work out some kind of an arrangement.

You're right; a refund is out of the question -- but a credit toward a future cruise is not. When my mother died two (2) days before I was scheduled to go on a cruise, I cancelled the cruise immediately. On my travel agent's first call, Celebrity's agent said that they could not do anything. The office manager told her that she got the wrong answer, and therefore to call back and speak to a supervisor if necessary. The supervisor said that they would give a credit on a future cruise of about 75% to 80% of the original fare, upon receipt of a copy of the death certificate. I provided the documentation and indeed received the credit on my next cruise.
