Default Millie has problems -again

For the second week in a row the Millie is having difficulties in Alaska

Last weeks cruise was cut short due to electrical problems with the Azipods. Seems to be similar issues again.

Compensation last week was very good. Passengers could stay onboard until Tuesday when they deadheaded to Vancouver. The received a full refunded plus a future certificate at the value the had paid for their cruise.

The ship left Vancouver for it's trip north and got at as far as Ketchican where it is now and will be for at least another day apparently.

There has not been an announcement of what the compensation will be but apparently it has been announced there will be some compensation.

I understand the majority of the passengers are handling it very well and making lemonade from the lemons they were handed.

For some people, last week and this, are a trip of a lifetime and no doubt there is a lot of disappointment. We will have to see what happens come tomorrow with both compensation and/or the rest of the cruise.

For the second week in a row, Celebrity has cancelled the Millennium Alaska cruise. The problem being reported in not the same as the previous week but they still don't know exactly what it is.

There will be a number of planes brought into Ketchikan tomorrow which will either take passengers back to Vancouver or on to Anchorage where those who have cruisetours booked will be able to continue with that part of their vacation.

There has been no mention yet of what will happen with next weeks cruise, scheduled for Friday.

Passengers will be receiving 100% refund and a future cruise credit for the amount of this cruise.

This is small consolation for those who have a vacation of a life-time and to have it destroyed two weeks in a row.

Very difficult situation to be in. Yes, I was aware they had cancelled what is basically the rest of the Alaska season for the Millie.

I do hope they are able to fix her problems once and for all. We were on her in Australia a few years ago when she ran into major problems. We heard the boom one night at dinner. My DH knew the problem right away and said there was going to be trouble ahead. Luckily for us we were only a couple of days to completion of our cruise so we missed nothing. The next 3 cruises were not so lucky. They were all cancelled while she was taken into dry dock for repairs.

To be very honest, as much as I like the S class, I haven't been back on one since. I advise my clients of the possible problems as well before they book.

I'm assuming they thought they had it fixed and could continue for more than one reason. Although there is a perfect dry dock in Victoria, it is being used for a Canadian Navy ship at the moment and there is no room. As has happened, they will now have to limp to the Bahamas, long way to go.

For those onboard and waiting to board, this is a terrible disappointment. I will say, Celebrity is trying. There are still going to be a lot of disappointed cruisers, but there really isn't much they can do except to try to salvage as much as possible.

Those that are on now and want to cancel their land portion scheduled to start on Friday have been told no refund and rightly so. Celebrity will get them there and pay for the cost, they should accept that and move on.

However, this will be another black eye on the cruising industry in general.

I have people already telling me they will never cruise because of all that happened with Carnival. Now this. A lot of potential new customers will be scared away from cruising from all of this.

You can be sure of that. Carnival is the proof however I honestly don't think Celebrity will take the hit they did. Celebrity is thinking smartly with the refunds and FCC etc.

However, there are a lot of angry people who don't think they are getting enough.

I was thinking of family members. they were all hot to do a Baltic next summer and now they say no. We were looking at 3 cruises, NCL, RCI, and MSC, none on Carnival. So they said," oh yeah there was a fire on RCI too and that disaster on costa last year," so they do not want to go on nay cruses period. Now this is just another they can add.

The one really wants to go to St. Petersburg. Maybe she will get there.

That is okay, I was not really interested in doing a Baltic so much anyway, at least not particularity St. Petersburg. I would like to go to Copenhagen and see some of Norway. But I really would rather go back to Italy, France, England and Ireland.

I always love it when people overreact! When you look at how many cruises took place last year with over 16million passengers and you consider how many problems there actually were (less than a handful), the chances of having a major problem are so remote that they actually have a better chance of getting killed driving to the airport!

With thinking like that, they shouldn't leave the house and never go anywhere on vacation. After all, the plane could fall out of the sky.

I'm not saying problems could not happen because obviously they do. But it doesn't happen all that often. The major problem is that when they do happen, the press blows everything way out of proportion and scares the hell out of those who don't know any better. And people who don't know alot about something and may be a little nervous about it in the first place are usually looking for something to support their fears instead of dispel them.

As I was discussing with a new client the other day, when people go on a cruise and everything turns out well, they got what they expected. And when people are happy with their cruise, they don't make a big deal about it, the press doesn't report it, and not alot of people care you had a good time. But let one little thing go wrong and everybody goes nuts to make a great big deal about it and make sure that everyone else knows about it.

As the saying goes; misery loves company. And we love to share misery.

This forum is a good example; we're constantly getting new people coming on here who have never posted before and they'll join just to complain about something and then never post again. They just wanted to share their misery.

I made up a saying many years ago that I think sums it up: "You'll always find what you're looking for, so look for the best in everything."

Having dinner last week with our son, an airline captain, a cousin asked him if he was ever "upset" when planes crash. Of course he is, but he has it in perspective. He flies out of LaGuardia and lives in the Hudson Valley, and said, "I'm in a lot more danger on the Palisades Parkway than I am strapping an airplane to my ass."

Several years ago he made a quick trip to Detroit from New York for the graduation party of a favorite relative. He "caught a jumpseat" on a noon flight, came to the party, and went home on a 9pm flight. At the party, a cousin who is retired, but has never flown in his life, looked at our son incredulously. "You came here from New York just for this?" Our son replied that of course he did. No big deal. The befuddled cousin stared at him in disbelief. Our son added, "You do know what I do for a living, don't you?"

It's sad to think about the things people deprive themselves of because there's an outside chance that something could go wrong. What an unfortunate way to make choices.

But I'm also sad to hear about the Millie's ongoing problems. We have very fond memories of her as far back as 2000 in the Mediterranean and 2003 on a crossing to Spain. We've also had wonderful cruises on the Connie and the Summit (as recently as three weeks ago), and really, really like the Millie class ships. But Millie seems to have been star-crossed mechanically ever since she was launched. I hope they can straighten things out.

The most recent statistic I heard quoted was that you are equally as likely to be injured in an airplane as you are on an escalator.

I use the saying " don't live you might die" and people think I'm crazy but really life can end at anytime so you need to live it , you don't have to take crazy chances but don't not do things because of what could happen.

I like that one!!

It's like a saying I made up, "You'll always find what you're looking for, so look for the best in everything."

Some people are scared of their own shadows.

But the ones that get me the most are the ones who want to find fault with everything or everybody. They're always looking for problems. And as I said, you'll always find what you're looking for, so these people will always find negative things to complain about because that's what they want to find.

But I'm with Manuel; having survived Vietnam, every day is a gift! And I try my best to enjoy that gift every day.

As the saying goes, "Every day above ground is a good day!"

Back to the Millennium, yes, they seem to have their fair share of problems with that one. I remember many years ago when it was still new they had problems with the engines and they filed suit against the company - don't know what ever became of that one, but I'm guessing they're not using them anymore since none of the other ships are having the same constant problems.

I'm also guessing they'll be moving this to a port like Freeport in the Bahamas or perhaps someplace on the West Coast where they can accomplish longterm repairs. So when you figure they're having to cancel at least 4 cruises plus a non-revenue repositioning cruise, this is going to be a very expensive breakdown for them.

I have friends onboard and have been in contact with them. Lots of issues and miscommunications going on, so it'll be interesting to see how Celebrity comes out of this reputation-wise.

Pete

Their reputation is or has taken a hit. They did so well until the fiasco of trying to get people booked on the right flights to the right place. And Michael Bayley was heard loud and clear - NOT. I wasn't fond of him as soon as he started. I think I was right about him. Let's see how long he lasts when he hasn't done well under his first emergency situation.

As for this pod problem, it's been going on for a long time. We were on in Australia when they went out. Three cruises after ours were cancelled. There were problems with the Infinity when back when. We were scheduled on one of her first Hawaiian cruises and got put off a month because of issues with the pod. That was back in 2001.

This azipods were made by Rolls Royce. There was a law suit and as far as I know, Rolls Royce paid a very large sum of money but it doesn't look like it was enough.

A great many of those cruising on the cancelled cruises have found their own accommodation on HAL, RCL, Princess and NCL. Those people are making lemonade from the lemons they were given.

On the dark side, there are 3 or 4 that just can't seem to move on. Their world ended with the Millie break down.

I haven't read anything in any newspapers yet. Has anyone else?

I have just a bit of a hard time with that lot who are going on about the world ending. Now, my DH is going through chemo at the moment. Our cruising days are temporarily halted. So, no, the world in not ending because they missed a cruise and decided to wail about it instead of do something about it.

On well,,,,,,,, such is life.

What exactly is it you don't understand.. The ongoing problems with the Millie is Alaska this week, the absolute idiocy of the way this event has been handled, the complete lack of a word of empathy from Bayley, tell me what you don't understand.

He didn't speak up - he has been so silent one wonders if he's even real. He hasn't been at this job long but the first real emergency has taken place and his lack of response is quite notable.

Anything, just anything he could have said. Instead he sent a crew of people who couldn't handle the job. Now with in the area of 10 - 12 thousand unhappy people, please tell me what you don't understand.

With so many problems in the world this is barely a blip. It certainly won't change the course of history.

This is not good for Celebrity or everyone who had booked a, late season, Alaska cruise. I do hope there is some accommodation for people who had non-refundable air.

We were on Millennium last December, in Southeast Asia, and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. I have sailed her twice before and loved the ship but she is showing her age. She needed some sprucing up. The elevator buttons were worn, carpeting needed replacing in some of the halls and near the buffet. This was strange since she'd had a dry dock earlier in 2012. It also didn't seem like your standard Celebrity cruise. The ports were wonderful but the service and attitude of the staff were just "ok". None of these have anything to do with the engine problem that has plagued this class of ship they were first launched. Even though Millennium is just over thirteen years old she has aged and I wonder how much longer she's going to stay around.

I also can't understand why people let their fears get in the way of doing what they dream of. In my signature is a statement I made up a long time ago and it does ring true: "Fear is the assassin of dreams." If you succumb to your fears you will never realize your dreams.

Take care,
Mike

He didn't speak up - he has been so silent one wonders if he's even real. He hasn't been at this job long but the first real emergency has taken place and his lack of response is quite notable.

Anything, just anything he could have said. Instead he sent a crew of people who couldn't handle the job. Now with in the area of 10 - 12 thousand unhappy people, please tell me what you don't understand.
What I don't understand if the part of your statement that I quoted. You stated they were booking people on night flights and that Bayley put an end to this. I'm curious where you heard this or if there is any proof to your statement. I'm not sticking up for anyone but that is a dynamite accusation if true.

She said "right" flights, not "night" flights.

Correct but I quoted him in my first post, follow up post was a mistake on my part, thanks Mike. Still would like to understand the basis for that statement.

The basis for that was the many people complaining because they wanted to go to Anchorage were told they were going to Anchorage but we sent to Vancouver and told to get their own way back to Anchorage. There were those who said they wanted to go to Vancouver and were forced to fly to Anchorage.

While Bayley may not have directly given this silly instructions, he is responsible for them.

I am aware of that, I corrected myself after Mike pointed it out to me.
