Would you travel to Europe at this time?

I was curious to know how people feel about traveling to Europe! Friends of mine were in Europe after 9/11 and were turned away from 2 hotels. The desk clerk told them "I would like to rent a room to you, but you are AMERICANS and we don't want any trouble here." Isn't it wonderful how loved me AMERICANS are around the world?

Some countries yes. Like Denmark, or UK, or Spain.

I would certainly travel to Europe. I will not travel to or spend money in France though. Went to Paris last year and found it expensive and the locals rather snooty and stand-offish. I also do not intend on supporting them with my dollars after they way they have treated and reacted to the USA especially after all we have done for them in the past. Just the way I feel about it.

Re: Would you travel to Europe at this time?

Certainly. Of course.

Long planned to take Millennium repo cruise to Barcelona in late April/May and have no intention of cancelling. From Barcelona we'll go to Madrid and London before returning home.

It is trite to say that if we cancel they've won, but it has an element of truth to it.

As for how we are treated, I've long been of the opinion that generally we get what we expect when we travel. I have a number of friends who were abroad on 9/11. The one who was in Nice reports that her hotel set up a special section of the bar with a TV set tuned to CNN and more or less reserved for Yanks. The management were very solicitous, friendly and compassionate, and most drinks at that bar were never billed. Plus they were given a heavily discounted room rate until Air France could get flying again.

If many people in other lands don't care much for us it's generally because so many of us have worked so hard to deserve their ire. You can only live on the "we saved your butts in WWII" thing for so long.

Yes---we will be on our way in about 17 days. Will end up in the Med later part of april and 1st week in May terminating in Rome. If the Airplanes fly and ships sail we will be outta here.

I have to agree with your last sentence.

In one word, Yes!

I will never take a cruise when it stops in a French port. I sent an E-Mail to the French Embassy regarding my future restriction on travel and, of course, included their wine on my list. I would have no qualms regarding other European countries. I would even do Turkey but I know my wife would be afraid.

If Constellation sails I'll be on her for the transatlantic.

Yes, I would go to Europe this year if it were already in our plans. Unfortunately, 2003 is already full for us, travel-wise. However, we are planning to go in 2004 or 2005, and we WILL go unless planes aren't flying or some other such circumstance.

I have no qualms about traveling to Europe, and will do so in July without hesitation. I figure you're just as much in danger at home as overseas.

I personally don't expect to notice any anti-american bias from foreigners. I guess it depends on the individual.

Cheers,
Michelle B.
