Unfortunately, in every website's struggle to be profitable there are compromises to be made. It is a fact of life that bigger ads get more attention. These are not as bad as the type of ads that cover up a whole page until they decide to go away, Those are becoming very common.
I too find these very very annoying....the advertisment on this board is already almost too much for me ....please stop the in between adds..because I don't like them I will never click on them...or consider whatever they will offer...

I sympathize with the owners of the website and can understand the need to find other ways to bring in revenue to keep the site running. I can scroll right past the ad and continue reading the posts because it's not any different than scrolling past a post itself, but when popups start occurring and I have to click on them to remove them from my view of the messages that's when I'll complain.
I hope all the members of this board realize that for us to continue to enjoy the boards without having to pay a subscription fee we will need to be tolerant of this kind of advertising.
As some have noted, it is an unfortunate requirement in order to keep this website free for all to use and gather knowledge and friendship. It does cost quite a bit to keep this site going and advertising is the only way we can do so. Consider it like a magazine or newspaper, there are advertisements all over them as well AND you must still pay for them! Be happy we have avoided those dreaded pop-ups that so many others have gone to.
A major turnoff? naw..those are the things that fall out of the magazines by the dozens...In order for us to be productive, and continue., we need advertising, its just a fact of business...its no problem for me to squint and make them go away.... Trip
I never look at these posts in the threaded view so this particular ad means nothing to me. I would rather be able to scroll past an ad than to have it pop up. Pop ups are the most rude and obtusive way of advertising in my opinion.
Costa Atlantica, 3/23/03
Jewel, 2/1/10, RCI cancelled our cruise, (insert sound of sobbing)
Interesting that 6 people who responded to my post are people who are paid by CruiseCritics to promote the board. Not surprised by their responses at all, as I am sure advertising money provides their salary. How else would they respond. I think the ads will backfire and you will have less people visiting. After all, there are other boards out there that have very little advertising or advertising that doesn't blink constantly and interfere with reading the posts.
The sad thing is that there is probably a roster of your favoite cruise lines waiting to annoy you as Oceana has. This form of advertising is not a way to garner good customer relations. When I see this, I don't think, "Oh, I want to book this company's cruise or services." I react with annoyance, not the promise of future business. Here that, future advertisers?
Sarah.. you mention CC, where you have to scroll down a full screen of ads first, to get to the message boards, and then a half a screen of locked in monitor messages to get to posters messages.... and you like that better?
Ads? What ads? I must've scrolled so fast to the next message that I have completely tuned out any advertisement.
This forum is FREE (I love that word)! It it informative! I have received so much more information from it in the past two months, than I have received in my 15 years of cruising.
I say, CruiseMates, do what you have to do to make a buck. I know first hand how expensive it is to maintain such an elaborate website. And let me tell you, if I hadn't already booked my next cruise. I would certainly read your sponsors ads 'cause I'm always looking for a good deal.
I too find it quite easy to scroll right past the ad, and I LOVE CruiseMates, so anything necessary to keep it going and online (short of pop-ups) doesn't bother me in the least, and NOBODY is paying me to say so.
