Get Your Red Hot here!!!

I was watching yet another tv show about food..This time it was about Hot dogs, [a fave of mine]showing how the country differs in eating them..So I pose these incrediblly important questions to you...

What do you put on your hot dog?
What would you NEVER even consider puttting on your hot dog?
Where do you get your favorite dog?

Mustard , relish and onions most of the time.
Chili and chesse sometimes, but this becomes a different entree, Not a real hot dog:)

Howard Johnsons had such great ones, but gone forever:( Yet others are great too:)

Franks, in Brockton, Ma. duplicates Ho Jo's..yayayay

I would shoot myself in the foot before I would put ketchup on one!!.No No No

I would be willing to go anywhere for a good hot dog:) I bet some of you have eaten at the places showcased ..they sure looked good...!

What do you put on your hot dog?
Mustard, onions, chili
What would you NEVER even consider puttting on your hot dog?
sourkraut, peppers, and chocolate chip cookies..;-)<BG>
Where do you get your favorite dog?
Hot Dog King in Newport News, Va. (about 30 miles from my home.)
Now i've got to change my shirt. I've droooooooled all over it..

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

Best place in the world for a Quebec specialty: hot dog steame (with an accent), is called Lafleurs. They also make the world's best fat greasy french fries, the only fries I will eat without ketchup (they are a vinegar and salt sort of fry). Steamies are hot dogs on a steamed rather than toasted bun. Yum! And it's ketchup and mustard only for me, although the "correct" Quebecois way is piled high with cole slaw.
Thanks, now I'm hungry.....

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

One interesting dog, they showed was in Hawaii, the roll, was a bread cylinder, that has a hole in it... They slide the dog into it..I think the dog was a bratwurst, then they have these tropical relishes..while I do not consider this a genuine hot dog>vbg> I sure would like to try it. All the people they showed eating it, seemed Very happy:) I think they called it a Puka dog, maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong....

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

I like my hot dogs plain... no condiments or anything. Don't know why, I guess I just never grew up when it came to hot dogs.

My favorite hot dog place is a place in the food court of the BX at the Air Force Base near my parents' house. Too bad I can't go there anymore.

Cheers,
Michelle P.

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

When I was growing up in UK the only hot dogs around were ones at fairs. I put fried onions on mine and ketchup but no mustard. Haven't been to a hot dog place here yet. Only buy them out of stores and haven't found a really nice one yet.

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

In Chicago we put just about anything on our dogs.... mustard, relish, onions, sport peppers (ugh!), cukes, tomatoes, celery salt (that's the secret ingredient) but no mayo or ketchup. There's a place near our house that won't even let ketchup into their establishment.

We love Portillos, Genes & Judes, Al's. Pinks on the West Coast and Nathan's on the East.

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

My best place to buy my fav hot dog is the Westward Ho Casino in Las Vegas..2lb hot dog on a bun for $.99..
Since I am alergic to mustard I will have to have mayo and oinions..sometimes chili but then its a chili dog..maybe a little sweet relish.
What I would never put on my dog is Mustard or saurkraut..
The 2lb hot dog is 18 inches long and one of the best tasting dogs I have ever eat..a meal for two.

Edited to say that it was Slots-o-Fun next to the Westward Ho..thanks Paul B.
And here at home it is Byran's plump dogs..along with other Bryan's meat..I like their truck drivers slogan..You might out run our trucks but you cant beat...........our lunch meat....

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

I like mine with just about anything (mustard, ketchup, mayo, relish, chili, onions, etc)
Years ago we had a local place that had the best hot dogs but that has gone with the wind.
Big John; I saw that on the food channel the other night I wish I had known about those when I was in Vegas.
Added note: try this with the Brats: put them on the grill; at the same time put a pan with beer, onions, & sourkraut on the grill. When the brats are just about ready, throw them over in the pan & let steam awhile.mmmmmmmmmm That's Good Eating!

After finding out what are INSIDE hotdogs....I'd probably eat them with anything on them. It can't get much worse!

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

Just give me a hot dog from anywhere with either chili or saurkraut, nothing else.I guess I am the only saurkraut lover, but I grew up in Western Pa, and had a touch of German in my ancestry.

I also have had the giant hot dogs at Slots Of Fun , and they constitute a full days meal. For those interested, I believe that imported beer is still only a dollar a bottle there.

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

Although I am not too crazy about hot dogs, I still have them every couple of weeks. My choice would be a nice bun(not too soft and squishy :-( ) and then mustard and hot banana peppers slices!!! Of course, I would have onions raw or cooked if offered!
OffTopic:do they have hot banana pepper slices anywhere on Carnival?? ex: at the Buffet?? Just wondering, as I am slightly addicted to them! :-)

Ah yes, if I am in Coney Island, then of course nothing other than Nathan's will do :-D Otherwise I love the Sabrett (sp?) hot dogs we get on the street corners here in Manhattan....also known as the "dirty water dogs", ha, ha!!

I always put mustard, relish and onions on my dogs.

I would never put ketchup - oh my goodness just thought makes my hair stand up ;-)

Hope everyone's having a super day!

Cathy

Klement's hot dogs from my own kitchen, steamed in a pot designed for pasta and steaming vegetables. Dogs go in the bottom inster, buns in the top insert when the dogs are near to perfection. Give me onion, pickles, cucumber mustard and celery salt. Were having them tonight Yum

Note; we have no top hot dog spot to go to around our area.

I have them once or twice a year at Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim when I go to figure skating performances. I only like ketchup on 'em.

Re: Re: Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

Ketchup and Mayo on innocent hotdogs is heresy and should be punishable by public flogging!!!!!!!!!! (John gets a pass because of allergies)

Here in NYC it is hard to beat the Sabretts sold from the carts w/ mustard relish and onions (the kind in red sauce)

At home in South Jersey I go for Dietz and Watson dogs. I usually put mustard relish and sauerkraut on them, but occasionally find the NY style onions.

I have had Chicago dogs and love em!!!

In Utah, I would get my dogs at the Maverick Country Store and smother them at the fixings bar with onions mustard jalapenos relish and pickles (with a alka-seltzer chaser)

I have to pass on Brats becuse they give me a headache along with kilbasa.

Half smoke with onions and sauerkraut.

Get em at the cart right outside the office. Two half smokes, chips and a can of soda for $3.50. The cart down the street charges $4.25 for the same combo.

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

Just mustard on my hot dog. I haven't eaten one in ages though. I also like the buns we used to get in MA. They had crust along the top and were bread on the sides. You put butter on the sides of the bun, grilled it and then put your hotdog in. YUMMY!

No ketchup for me. I worked with someone once who liked hotdogs with peanut butter on them. UCK!

Phyll:

I loved those buns, too. Especially when they were filled with a lobster roll instead of a hot dog. :-)

my husband spent his summers in Mass. and raves about those buns!

I love hot dogs!! Gotta have mustard and sweet relish on them. I too grew up in Mass and love those buns. The best dogs I ever had were in New Orleans in 1970. Fresh from the street vendors with onions and mustard and sweet relish YUMMY!!!

I have never heard the term half smoke.... Is that a regular hot dog?

Marc August 4th, 2004 07:55 PM

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

Trip:

I didn't realize that a half smoke is a regional dish. Here is a link to an article in Washington Post that talks about half smokes and our ubiquitous carts.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp...&notFound=true

I didn't cut and paste the article as that would have been a violation of the terms and conditions (and copyright law).

Where I grew up in Trenton NJ the only way to have a hot dog was a Casino dog.......with potato wedges and green peppers and onions....the only place to get it was oddly enough, Casino....a quick walk from my high school.......

Re: Get Your Red Hot here!!!

Nathan's with mustard, relish and hot sauce (lots and lots of hot sauce). that's my "real" hot dog, but.....living in Atlanta, you just GOTTA have a Varsity chili dog every once in a great while. If nothng else than to experience the world's largest fast food restaurant, the guy (since retired) that yells "whadayahave?" and gets real annoyed if you don't know....and of course the disgusting onion rings.

My dh calls the Varsity "Jiffy Lube" - he swears they cook everything in WD40.

Chili (or back here we would call it loose meat), finely chopped onions & very good mustard. NO KETCHUP!!! yuk! ruin the whole thing. Best hot dog is a "coney island hot dog, with ice cold bottle of pop from a place in Sioux City.....yum!

PEPCID HERE WE COME!!!

Deb, you must be a midwesterner, to call it pop;) In Boston, its called tonic....I agree, all those who use ketchup, should go to their rooms ,NOW:):):)
