Default Canadian taxes are shocking.

I guess it's the same for those traveling to the U.S. but this just shocked me.

I just booked air travel to Halifax using frequent flyer miles and got my confirmation email. Despite the air tickets being free, I must pay the taxes. Here they are.

Security Service Fee.............$7.50
Canada Air Transport Tax....$7.51
Canadian Airport Improvement Fee..........$7.51
Canada Harmonized Sales Tax........$1.13

Add on top of that the:

U.S. Immigration Fee (whatever that is, and whoever gets this money??)....$7.00

Total in taxes to fly to Canada for free..................$30.65 per person.

Regards,
Thomas

I use United to fly to Canada on Frequent Flier miles all the time and I just pay $10 for the ticket which is the standard fee United charges. No extra taxes for me.

You don't have to tell me! We pay double tax on everything, Provincial and Federal.
And because of all the airport taxes our "free" Air Canada flights are about $50. p.p.

I can't speak for the airline fares, but I was up in Toronto several years ago when my boys were in high school. We went out to breakfast with my dad and step-mother and the bill was $32! That's probably inexpensive by today's standards. But the point is, there was a food tax, a beverage tax, a sales tax, etc. WOW. Our meals weren't that expensive, like the $2.99 special, but the tax got us! Lynne

That is the way it is here in our tourist community..we have sales, state, business, and a hamburger tax..on a 3.00 meal there is like 58 cent tax..that is why McD, Sonic and some of the other resturants have moved out of the city into the county. They say it is to collect the tax from all the tourist..well in the off season guess who still gets stuck with the tax. .and the off season is way much longer than the tourist season.

Thomas, That is a another good reason we fly out of Seattle instead on Vancouver!! The taxes on top of the more $$ flights for the 4 of us makes it a lot cheaper to fly out of SEA!!

What are you complining about. We few on Aklaska Airlines out of Palm Springs to San Francisco to catch the Regal Princess docked in San Francisco.

The following are fees or taxes added to the ticket:
US 11.02
ZP 6.20
XT 14.oo
Total $ 31.22
