My town is getting Ikea! The closest one was in Connecticut, now the closest one is a mile away..The local Pennysaver, outlined plans for the GIGANTIC traffic jams expected..The police ovetime, the multi-town cooperation..signs on the highway, It sounds horriffic..
I hope the novelty will wear off, but I know it won't, till at least after the new year..
I have perused the catalogue for years, but now up close and personal, in this 346,000 square foot space, I can eat lunch, drop a kid off at the babysitter area, get a map and look over the 51 room settings, and shop till I drop.
Do you have one near you, have you recovered yet? I think I am afraid

Trip, a word of warning. Bring bread crumbs with you on your first visit, and trail them behind you. You will get lost, guaranteed, and never be able to find your way out! I think they design it that way, so that you have to wander through the entire store (buying as you go) before you find the REAL exit!
We've had an IKEA here for years, and I love it, but I hate getting lost!
the news interviewed two guys who have pitched tents in what looks like a foyer or lobby to be the first two customers when the new store opens, they will win something like a $1000 shopping spree. The store doesn't open for another 10 days!
We have an Ikea about ten minutes away. I've never cared for Ikea and have not been in the local store. It's been open for about two years now.
I do want to shop in a Home Goods store, though. We have one close by, but I haven't had a chance to go there.
Vancouver has had one for a long time in Richmond(a suburb of Vancouver) and then we got one out our way about 4 years ago in Coquitlam. The new one is SO big as RD says, that I actually do not like going through it!!
We still use the table(now the computer is on it!) and our coffee table and 2 end tables that we got 20 years ago. We have some other odds&ends of IKEA stuff.
IKEA always has lots of fun, decorating doo-dads,& kitchen thingies.

VALOR Jan/05-our first family cruise was great!
The nearest IKEA to us is the store in Atlanta. After that, the closest ones are in Virginia and Texas. I don't think we have anything to worry about for the time being. The only incursion we're facing at this time is the Invasion of the Snowbirds! Maybe they'll bring one of them-there IKEAs along with them.
Ikea isn't for everyone. There is not a STICK of traditional anywhere in the store. If you don't like Scandanavian, modern furniture, you won't like this store.
We have one here in Atlanta and it's considered a "day" shopping trip. Even if you don't like the style of furniture, you should go at least once for the experience.
As far as traffic, ours is located downtown, and I don't think the traffic has been THAT much worse. The first couple of months will be the worst.

IKEA is a very, very successful Swedish Co. Like some have said, your visits to the store can be quite an experience. We have one about a mile from where I live and it is BUSY with tons of traffic. Incidently, for people like myself, they will assemble the products you buy for a modest fee. We all can't be Red Green .
