Default Love Bugs

Talking about bugs bugging you ... we (Floridians) get the love bugs twice a year - May and September. They're called that cuz they're mating in the air and squash really well on your cars (to the point that they can damage paint).

Today - at the dog park - they were particularly bad. Someone asked what good do they do ... no answer; someone else - where do they lay their eggs ... no answer. People want to know! Not really.

We're just waiting until next Friday, June 1 when they'll leave and hurricane season starts (actually it started this month with a sub tropical storm ... really doesn't seem like a "subtropical" should count!)

Other than that - this is still paradise.

Yep, love bugs are our curse here in Texas, too!

We on the SE coast of FLorida got lucky with the winds, because they blew the love bugs over to thewest coast! They lay their eggs in the rotting vegetation. They do no good for us, but have a great time till they wind up smashed on our windshields!!

CruizeNut,
I see I am just across the bay from you in Pinellas. I saw my first lovebug of the year today while waiting at a red light. Kinda looked like a mini Huey heliocopter buzzing all around my windshield.....

Here is the web site for all all in the know...
they come out of the ground when the sun heats up and fly in swarms.
Coming home from Miami, we had to stop twice to clean the windshield.
The wipers do nothing but make a bigger mess. UGH

Yesterday driving to and from Sanibel my windshield was a lovebug graveyard. The windshield had to be cleaned twice...what a mess. At the resort we could not sit outside and eat, we had to go inside. I am gald when this is over!

When I lived in the Woodlands, north of Houston, they would swarm my backyard. I put a bug zapper up... ZAP!

I have never heard of them. It sounds like a whole experience I can say I don't need to live thru. They sound disgusting. How big are they? I'm imagining a June size type bug in my mind.

My Granddaughter told me about the Love Bugs and I believed her but I looked it up on the internet anyway.

Down here in Florida at one of the Universities they were trying to breed an insect that would eat/dispose of mosquitos. I guess they thought that they had it ripped and let them go. It looks like we are at the tail end of our May bout with them. They go to ground and the male dies, the female lays her eggs and then she dies. Then the babies come back to fly united in September and repeat the process. They also like WHITE. A native floridian told me that when I pulled into a gas station and saw a white planter turned black. They look a lot like lightning bugs, but I guess they are too busy to light up.

If you are interested go to ask.com and ask for love bugs. You'll ge the lowdown on them.

CrabbieI - thanks for the offer, but I'll pass at this time - dodging the June Bugs in the evening are enough for me.

Check out Sea Trekker's link - tells you everything you ever wanted to know about them - females = 1/4" and males = 1/3" among other things. Thanks Carole.

Inis46 - until 5 years ago I used to live in Redington Shores in Pinellas!

Just down the beach blvd. from me........in fact, Marilyn Monroe once stayed at one of the big, tall motels there in the early 60's (I forget the name but remember it was a coral color).

Default Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio

Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio honeymooned there ... believe it was North Redington Beach (or Redington Beach) - there's a large cluster of condos there now (4 or 5 buildings) ... and the name escapes me, too, at the moment.

ewwww!! glad i live in california i think?! i have to watch out for the other motorists instead of the love bugs! although i had a lovely array of bugs (i think it was the variety pack) on the bumper of my car after visiting my friend in the countryside and heat. it took the cub scouts about a half hour just to scrap the bug layer off the bumper of my car. i gave them an extra big tip for that one!!
