Default Two Lessons the Hard Way

I just found out the hard way that:

1) Only ten options/answers are allowed on the polls in this forum.

2) Polls about sex on cruises get deleted within minutes!

As long as posts stay within the guidlines of our TOS here at Cruisemates, the posts won't get deleted.

It's OK to ask at what stage of a courtship it's appropriate for a couple to share a cabin onboard; it's even OK to discuss a Governor's prostitutes! But not whether or not you've had sex on a cruise ship, or whether or not you'd like to.

Another question might be--- who cares when or if people have sex on a cruise ship. Their business-- no one else's.

I think the moderators do a pretty darn good job and are pretty tolerant to a point about monitoring postings..it's not an issue you should take on a personal level..we all have to abide by the rules of the road and at some point we all have had a response or thread edited for the good of the forum

a posting you will never see deleted will always center on whether Kuki has antlers or horns (see that could have a dual meaning) ::

We have a tough job. I made the comment about not seeing what the original poll had to do with cruising (refering to the fact that the question was framed within the context of a cruise - not refering to the fact that non-cruise questions are not allowed here, because they are).

The point is - this board is supposed to be "chit-chat" which means people talking and sharing thoughts, personal inforation about each other and stuff like that.

I wasn't crazy about the original question being up but we let it stay, but sometimes one post like that does lead to a slew of similar, way off-topic posts, and then the boards swings to a tangent that makes regular folks get drowned out in messages they don't really relate to.

We had a similar occurence a while back with joke and games posts. They were fun, but they were drowning out the typical conversation that happens here. It's hard to explain, but a lot of regulars like these boards but they get disenfranchized when too many off-the-wall posts start showing up. Sometimes we just have to draw the line. Sorry.

sometimes? The truth is I get more heat than anyone when I post, but it is teaching me I just have to be very careful about the context in which I make my statements.

I got the heat put on me once and only once after flaming a new user for asking a question that had been asked multiple times before.

Learnt my lesson once, learnt my lesson well.

Even though there is a search function in the message boards, there are always people who will just ask a question without even looking for the answer first.

We find that some people still are not even clear on how to use message boards and they often come in here and will post a question on the first bord they find.

We find Carnival questions under Azamara, for example, just because it is the first board.

I think these people really don't even fully understand what a message board is or how it works. And what they are hoping for is that someone will just answer their questions by email.

The thing to remember is that some people are not like those of us who use the Internet daily, they dont know how to Google or use message boards. They do something like leave a message and then don't remember how they did it, so they don't even come back.

They probably don't even know what ship they are on, what web site this is, or how their travel agent is.

You would be AMAZED how many emails I get that say "we are booked on your ship but we haven't received our documents yet, when are you going to send them to us?"

I just got this one on Friday...

Hi - I am starting to plan our 10th Anniversary celebration and I'm hoping you will help me. We have chosen Hawaii as our destination, but since neither of us have been there, we have a lot of homework to do! I would very much like to spend our vacation on a cruise (7-15 day), visiting a few of the islands so any information you have on cruises starting from one of the islands would be greatly appreciated. Should we decide to visit a resort(s) as my husband wishes, I would also like information on all inclusive packages, hotels and resorts. In addition, maps, car rentals, shopping, fishing, attractions etc. will be greatly appreciated. Perhaps we can combine a cruise and a resort stay? is there any cruises leaving from Mexico?
We do not have high speed internet service, so trying to download anything takes forever and I usually time out before completion. Please SNAIL MAIL this information to me at: _____

I have a standardized email reply that says ...

Dear Reader...

CruiseMates is simply a cruise guidebook, published on the Internet. All we do is write and publish articles about cruise lines and ships, and maintain certain user-interactive features like message boards and photo galleries. We are supported by advertising from cruise lines and cruise travel agencies, but we do NOT keep any records of people who book cruises through our advertisers.

People often confuse CruiseMates.com with the cruise line they booked their cruise with - or with the cruise travel agent who booked the cruise for them. We are neither a cruise line nor a cruise booking travel agency. We do not have any personal information about you or details about any cruise you may have booked.

Questions about your upcoming cruise:
Unfortunately, CruiseMates' staff does not have time to answer personal
cruising questions by email or do research for you. So, if you have a
question of a general nature about an upcoming cruise, such as "Does the
ship have hair dryers?" you can reach a much larger pool of experts for any cruising question simply by visiting our message boards. Here is the link: http://www.cruisemates.com/forum/

Looking for Cruise Quotes?
If you are writing to inquire about the price of an upcoming cruise, anyone one of our advertisers is qualified to help you. You can find an abundance of experienced and helpful agents, and even some great deals on cruises you may not have throught about taking, at the links below:

CruiseMates Cruise Bargains: http://www.cruisemates.com/CF/bargains/
See dozens of up to the minute cruise specials from reputable cruise
agencies.

Problem with a Past Cruise:
If you had a problem with a past cruise, I suggest you first locate all the
documentation you received about your cruise from the cruise agency you booked through, and from the cruise line itself. You need to know the name of the cruise line, the name of your ship and your sailing date, and most importantly, look for some kind of unique booking confirmation number given to you by the cruise line. First, contact the travel agent who booked your cruise, or if you booked directly with the cruise line then contact them.

You can find contact information for most cruise lines and other travel
professional organizations here:
http://www.cruisemates.com/mbindex/clindex.cfm

Looking for a Job on a Cruise Ship?
CruiseMates does not own or manage any cruise ships, or hire staff. If you want information about working on ships, please visit our crewmember message boards here:
http://www.cruisemates.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=36

Thank you for your inquiry - we hope we can be of service to you as we have been for millions of cruise enthusiasts already.

I use to get some PM's like that, when I was on the Carnival park of CM, and they really didn't mean any harm, but like you say, didn't understand what we were doing here.

Default Thanks, Paul!

Very informative!

The examples remind me of Leno asking people in California the name of the ocean "right there"! (No, they didn't know!)

I liked the way you resolved the Joke and Games Posts. It's nice have an area with all jokes and games.

CruiseMates is PRIMARILY a cruise web site. The Chit Chat message board is indeed an "Off Topic" center, within the site.

It's purpose is to allow "chit chat" for members of the community to get to know each other a bit better. But it's not structured for debate of political and social issues.

There's hundreds of boards and sites and blogs devoted and indeed aimed at those who want to participate in those arguements and debates. A simple Google search finds them. CruiseMates is not one of them.

This board is for cruisers to socilalize, not to solve the ills of the world. When I go on a cruise I am on vacation, I have no interest in getting into discussions to solve all the problems of the world. The same is true with the majority of people visiting these boards.

Not that people igonore those problems, but there's plenty of places that are approriate for those discussions. Everywhere doesn't have to be.

if we get everyone to come on the BLOG2NOLA cruise, we can solve all of the world's problems in 5 days and still have time for the PJ party on deck
