For the first time ever, I sat through the entire Olympics Opening Ceremonies.
Without a doubt, k.d. lang singing Hallelujah was the highlight for me, she does a better job of that song than it's writer, Leonard Cohen.
K.D. Lang did sound fantastic! Though she now looks like Wayne Newton
There were some great special effects using the entire floor, etc. as video screens. But overall I thought the production was slow and somewhat like it could have been put together by a community center team. Topped off, of course, by the failure of the hydraulics at the finale.
Hayley votes for the totem poles and the whales, I liked the ice cracking floor.
I was a bigger fan of Joni Mitchell than kd lang.
The cauldron lighting did get kind of awkward....especially going to the other part of town.
China was a hard act to follow.
Angela Z.
I agree with the floor and lighting being highlights. The whales were #1 and the ice cracking was #2 for me. I knew some of the fiddle players in that set so that was interesting.

Well Kuki I guess you just had to be there!!! I was and the atmosphere and the show was phenomenal. Congratulations to the organising committee for a job well done.
KD Lang was amazing, Sarah McLaughlin, well what can I say?
All in all a great show well worth the hundreds of dollars for the seat.
Well done Vanoc.
Watched the Ceremonies in there entirety from two different points of view.
We watched NBC and CTV in HD (High Definition) . Just to get a different
commentary on the show.
Found NBC used some different and focused on different parts of thr show.:-D

I guess you are right you had to be there. I have to agree with Kuki. Watching it on television, I found it slow. The lighting while great was over used, and became a distraction. I think the luge accident left a cloud over the day. To be honest China is a tough act to follow. Mike

I thought that the entire opening ceremony was fantastic. What I especially enjoyed was seeing the different tribes of native canadians in the opening ceremony, seeing canadians from all walks of life holding the olympic flag, and seeing the famous, and unfamous canadians lighting the olympic torch! The organizing committe of this olympiad should be proud of the great job they have done!
I discovered tonight that the guy who handed the torch to Wayne Gretzky is a local man who owns the pub here in Pictou where we go for Trivia on Sat. nights. I don't know what his connection to the Olympics is, but he and his wife have missed 2 Saturdays at the pub because they're in Vancouver....
I agree with some of you, I found it nice, but a bit too slow and a bit too long. I did enjoy the ice and the whale things. I guess I'm "out of the loop", but I didn't "get" some stuff .
I couldn't stay awake long enough to see the flame problem, but I saw it today on the news. It's not something I'd personally get upset about, but I can see how it would upset Canadians! Everything should be perfect !

The whole thing put me to sleep. Canada can do better than that.
Also, I object to a Professional Athlete lighting the flame, as well.
Terry Fox's mother should have done it in his memory. He is, and always will be, the epitome of the Canadian spirit, and a greater hero than Gretzky can ever aspire to be.
