Default Question For Paul, Kuki, Mike

I noticed in the last couple of days that Cruismates now has a product thingy on it.

Example: Josh came in here to ask where the new Hallmark had moved to. I was not on CM, but was at another web site. I googled it, and then went to CM. There was an ad for Hallmark. I didn't think much of it, until something else was beside one of the threads I was reading. It was for a business in our town.

Now this is a very small town, so the chances of you having ad space for them is not likely.

Question: Can anyone else see these ads, except me?

Thanks

Luanne, don't blame CruiseMates, blame Google.

Mike, correct me if I am wrong but I think you would need to keep Google from saving any cookies to your machine to avoid it.

Is it similar to Facebook, where on the right side of the page, there are always artisan jewelry ads, which is my interest...Is this google on Facebook? I did scroll down and saw some Boston ads....but nothing local to my immediate area.

I'm seeing ads for everything, including cruises. sometimes they take up half the page, sometimes run sideways across, in between posts. They are all annoying.

Yup, all the local stuff to the individual is google specific. I've never seen an ad take up half a page since I've been here ... which is the beginning.

But RD, I'm sure they'd dump all the ads if you'd like to volunteer to cover all the expenses of keeping the site up.

It is a commercial web site, kept free for all of us to use by the income derived from advertising. Until someone steps up to pay those bills, I'm willing to scroll on by all the ads that don't interest me, and click on those that do.

And, there's nothing wrong with supporting our advertisers, so they continue to advertise and keep the site growing.

exactly right - they look at your IP address, and these days mine is something like cox.phoenix.net - so they know where you are from aytomatically.

And when I take my laptop to San Diego I get San Doego ads.

That's just the way like is going. In a few years you will be walking down the street and you will get a text message on your phone and it will say...

"Hi, Famous Amos here, look across the street, don't our cookies smell good?"

I'll get on it right away and remove the ads. Then right after that we'll remove all the moderators and a day or two later we'll shut down the site.

Take care,
Mike

The ads are OK with me.
It's like watching TV, someone has to pay for the programs.

I never said anything about removing the ads!!!!! I know how important the ads are. It just seemed strange to see a local ad.

For the record!!! If any of you see an ad on Cruisemates, please click on it to see what they have to offer. You might find a good bargain, and it helps with the finanaces for Cruisemates.

Thank you and definitely no need to apologize. We want and encourage people to post as much as possible. Actually we need it, especially on the cruise boards.

Take care,
Mike

P.S. Luanne: We know you weren't complaining about the ads.

They are not always to your physical location. I live in the Tampa Bay area but I get a lot of Boston based ads on my FaceBook page. I was thinking that they take your "likes" into consideration too. I belong to pages about Massachusetts and the Boston area since my hometown is Melrose, about 10 miles from Boston.
I too can put up with the ads as long as CruiseMates is here.

I know I got to the point where thwe ads became "invisible" years ago. I don't even see ads (mentally) when I surf the web.

And who the heck ever says "surf" the web anymore. Remember when that was what it was always called? "web surfing"?

That's how long its been since I noticed an ad on a web page.
