Default Why I will not joing Facebook

I know many of you are Facebook members and this will undoubtedly not happen to you but you should know what can happen.

A person I know well who lives in New York got a phone call last night from a member of an Animal Organization to which she belongs. The woman said, "I have to read to you an e-mail I just received."

The e-mail was from a well known Veterinarian in the New York area who is big on animal rights. He has written many letters to the editor and done public speaking on the topic.

The e-mail was a two sentence unbelievable piece of vitriol about the person I know. As a matter of fact, my Humane Society even got one!

The person was of course beside themselves and called the Vet this morning, a Vet by the way whom she fully supports. The man was a basket case. He said she had to know he would never ever write such things and he had already received over thirty phone calls from people whose names were used in similar e-mails. The reason we received one was whomever did this even went and got information and addresses of animal organizations from the popular Pet Finders website. When I called the individual, all I said was, "I have to read you an e-mail we just received at the shelter." She replied, "I already know about it" and even told me what it said.

How did this get started? The Vet's Facebook account was hacked. Whomever did this used all of these people in an effort to get them to turn against him and destroy him because the e-mail is allegedly from him.

The situation is absolutely unreal and there is really no way that either he nor all the people about which this vitriol was written can undo the damage simply because they have absolutely no idea to whom all of this stuff was sent nor at this point, even who sent it. Of course everyone who personally know the parties involved know this isn't true but there are thousands of animal organizations, shelters, etc., who are receiving this information who have no idea that absolutely none of it is true.

So, that my friends, is why this is the only "social network" to which I belong and even then, that's still no guarantee this couldn't happen to me. In a way it has but I expect it because I write a weekly newspaper column that while extremely popular in this area, nevertheless is also read by people who despise anyone who advocates anything concerning animal welfare.

This poor Veterinarian now calls Facebook a monster that in retrospect, shouldn't even exist. But then again, this is the world in which we live.

Todd

If you have one or two of the emails -- with full headers --I or someone with good computer science skills can easily trace it to a source.

Perhaps with that info the vet can pursue a slander/defamation suit.

Thanks! I'll pass the information along. The copy I have is a forward while I understand the original has additional information relative to the Vet's business so that is an original.

There are a lot of horror stories, but there are wonderful stories that we don't hear about. It has certainly brought families closer together, it has allowed communication between loved ones in a war zones, lost children reunited with parents, siblings reunited, rekindled lost romances, etc. It's life.

I am not a fan either. Some of my friends are on FB under pseudonyms

When I receive multiple 'friends requests' from email addresses, I add the said email address to the blocked list.

I take snoozeman's point but amongst our extended family, we still pick up the phone and even write letters.

I am guilty of using Skype.

I limit my friends on Facebook. If I don't know them personally I don't friend them and depending on who they are I may not friend them even if I do know them.

There are people who I really don't want to let into my personal life.

I can't understand why a personal account needs to have 200 "Friends". No one's life is that interesting. I can see it if you have a business angle and require more people to know about your business but not personal.

Take care,
Mike

I not only refuse to join Facebook, I also try to limit time on public wifi systems. And, when I am on a public wifi, I tunnel everything through a VPN connection.

Of course, public wifi and non-secure sites have made it so easy for hackers or identity thieves that even basic security is a decent deterrence.

I have friends that have e:mail accounts hacked far more than their facebook accounts. It's not just limited to Facebook - totally agree with avoiding public Wi-Fi though

My e-mail account was hacked into in 2000 . Its a lot more tempting to hackers to go after people on social networks where many people have more personal info posted than you can imagine . Even on a site like CM I try to post as little personal info as possible .

I'm with Mike on the friend limit. I only have family members or close friends. I have a few friends from the old hood but thatís it. I do receive friends request by people I use to know or went to school with but I decline. I donít list my birthday and donít mention anything to personal and only my people can view my page.

Keeping all settings on "friends only" and not listing birthday and city/state is a good idea.

Facebook is a great way to stay in touch with family and friends out of state and out of country.

I like Facebook because you can like pages that are of interest to you and those topics will appear on your home page. When I open my home page all my favorite topics are there....music, dance, health, fitness, tv shows, movies and of course Cruising.....

Royal and Carnival does a wonderful job on FB posting info, pictures and daily status.

And of course I love to see the jewelry creations by Trip.

Queen:

I am amazed at how many people have their profiles, photos and information open for everyone to see.

Marc is right about unsecured networks. People will have their disks in "share" mode and not use any sort of data security. It takes very little tech savvy for someone "at the coffee shop" to just access your computer while you sit there and browse Facebook. Before I purchased a computer that is just used for travel I would come home and wonder why the heck I couldn't access my laptop from the other computers in the house and then I would have to go in and reset all the security settings.

Oh yes: I also like to look at Trip's jewelry.

One thing about a social network/board like this is that you can remain fairly anonymous and share what you want.

Take care,
Mike

Henry,

Can you find anything more than their name and a basic profile? If you can see their photos or their postings then they don't have their privacy settings correctly set.

Take care,
Mike

Mike I often wonder do people know their profile is open for the world to see and don't care or are they not sure how to change the setting and don't realize their profile is open.

I had a friend with over 1,000 friends :o and she posts when her whole family (and the dogs) are going on vacation. However she has a close up picture posted of her dog with his tag in full view. So now all her friends know her house will be empty that week and they have the full address from the dog's tag.

Henry your kids don't have the setting on "no one" in the "FB Search"
If you are set on "no one" then nobody can find you by typing your name in the search bar.

Always a good idea too to check all your settings from time to time.

Another great thing about FB is Parents can spy on their teens. Of course the teens have to agree to be friends with their parents.
Oh wait the teens don't call it "Spying" they call it "Creeping". 8)

Happy Superbowl everyone!!

What a lot of "young" people don't know ... is that recruiters/employes check facebook. I'f, as an employer, I'm not impressed with someone's facebook profile (i.e no security settings etc.) .... then that is a mark against them in being considered for a job.

Yep. Certain employees don't show for work or leave early for "an appointment". You go to their page and there they are at Starbucks or the mall.

Bragging about "bosshoggin" or "420 time" is not something you want potential employers or school admins to see when they are considering you.

Same with Twitter.

When I was in the position of interviewing a prospective employee FB did not exist ,however ,I doubt very much that I would have checked them out on line .

I have been on FB for about 2 years, and 99% of it I enjoy...I have watched some, get upset over whatever and let loose...Blocking is an easy out sometimes.

I love the ability chat with some of my favorite authors, and talk books. I also follow design, and, bead sites to see what's new, and posting my designs as an archive of my work, thanks to all of you who like to see the finale of each piece.

Another way to have friends around the globe..BUT, I don't need 2000 friends....what would I do for Thankdgiving dinner?

I derive pleasure from the music board I contribute to . There are radio DJ's who post there as well as singers ,musicians and songwriters . They are very friendly and post along with us ,the regular folk .I also e-mail with some of them.

Any system can be hacked, of course. I'm surprised that a breach into the Facebook account of well known Veterinarian in the New York area who has written many letters to the editor and done public speaking on the topic would not generate any news coverage. When did this happen?

How does he know it was his Facebook account that was breached and not the email accounts of the animal organizations themselves?

Except for the profile and the portraits, Facebook is not really much different than Cruuisemates Chit Chat. People just post the topic of the day and what interests them. Facebook does enable you to look up old friends and keep in touch. I check it for a minute or so just as I check out Chit chat, and sometimes post a thought or two. It helps to keep a poor, old, bedraggled thing like me alive.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

IMHO--Facebook is good for cruisers.

John Heald spends more time on his FB account than his blog. On FB a good thing you can do is screen out all the other peoples posts and just read his.

All the cruise lines have FB pages. A lot of the venues we plan to visit on excursions have FB pages. Jacks Shack in Grand Turk and The Booze Tour in Cozumel are very popular FB ones.

I maintain a Cruise Friends list. I get to see photos right away. (this morning I saw the snow on the cars in Galveston from a friend who just got off the VoS) I keep up with crew members on various ships--that's how I got the scoop on the Allure meeting the Oasis well before the 'press' staged event. Many table mates from previous cruises are still FB friends.

It's a good source of information.

Right now my wife is in Florida on the annual WDW trip. Several of the younger ones post photos direct from their iPhones to FB. I can kind of keep up with their fun on FB. Last night I saw a photo of my DD at Universal and that was nice.

Once again, just like anything else use common sense when using any type of social networking.

Common sense dictates not to disclose personal information on a site such as year , home address ,home city ,full name ,etc .
