I fully understand a non smoker not wanting to be in a cabin with a travel mate who is puffing away. What I don't understand is why they assume this will happen. Not all smokers would be that inconsiderate.
They could be losing out on a nice person to cruise with, and one who would not smoke in front of them.
I recently got turned down flat for this before she even questioned if I'd be smoking in the cabin. The person's location was less than 10 miles from me, ideal. Could have communicated either by e mail or in person to sort things out. Does being a non smoker make you a better cruisemate?
I guess it was the way she responded that irked me. It was fate anyway, she's not answering anyone.
So, non smokers, don't discount those who do. We are not all inconsiderate.
I guess my rant is done
It is her loss. I smoke and hubby does not but never have I considered smoking in the cabin it is just too small and most likely would bother me too.
For anyone who is looking for a cabin mate to not even give a person a chance to state that no they don't smoke in the cabin is being rude.

Thanks for not turning this into a flame thread and say how smelly I'd be etc. I've seen several interesting seekers, but now as soon as I see "seeking non smoker" I don't even attempt a contact. I'm sure I'm not the only smoker who has shyed away from answering a post. But by shying, we don't see posts except the non smoker ones. So, we both lose out!
Up to a point I understand, but there can be compromise. We smokers are able to refrain when needed, and it's a shame to be classified a second rate person.
I have to say I would turn down a smoking room mate. Not that I would ever think they were less nice or less of a great person for smoking. The odor clings to a smoker's hair and clothing. I just cannot stand the smell. It is that simple.

Non-smokers have different levels of tolerance. For someone who is very sensitive, we can smell smoke on your (the figurative "your") breath, your skin and your clothes.
I think when one smokes they lose sensitivity to that smell, and despite fragrances or breath mints, the smell is still there.
I have a co-worker who smokes. He travels down a long corridor and down a flight of stairs to go outside to smoke. On his return trip, he brings the smell of smoke right into the office with him [and he chews gum and/or breath mints on the way back into the office].
Not everyone is sensitive to the smell, but I know I am.

I guess I'm a SMELLY BAD PERSON, no personality, bad cruisemate.
Subject closed before the thread gets hot.
There is no such thing as a Bad CruiseMate! No, I do not think you are a bad person or even a smelly one. I just think the cigarette smoke that clings to a person is what is bad and smelly.

No one said anything about you being a bad person.
You asked a question as to why someone would not be open to rooming with a smoker, even if the smoker would not smoked in the room. A question was asked and it was answered.
Smoking is your choice. Not rooming with a smoker would be my choice.
No one is atacking you or your choices or calling you a bad person.

There's not much worse than being confined in a small space, such as a cruise ship cabin, with somebody whose breath and clothing wreak of tobacco smoke. I realize that this may depend upon what and how much one smokes, but I also understand why many of my fellow non-smokers would be reluctant to take the chance that it may be too much.
