I have always felt this way, I am convinced we came from the sea, I am constantly drawn to it, as a child I was the same, felt at one with the oceans. If we go on a beach holiday we have to be ON the beach, on a ship I need to see the sea, maybe this is why inside cabins are no good to us?

Agree. I really think it lowers stress and creates a feeling of well-being that is very hard to explain, but also very real.

I am drawn to the sea. One of the reasons I chose to live in this town is that we are quite close to the ocean.
Tomorrow we will be spending the afternoon on Daytona beach.

Agree completely. Here's a wonderful quote I wrote down many years ago from the writer, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
"No matter where I am, and even if I have no clear idea where I am,
And no matter how much trouble I may be in,
I can achieve a blank and shining serenity if only I can reach the very edge of a natural body of water....the very edge of anything, from a stream to an ocean and it says to me: "Now you know where you are. Now you know which way to go. You will soon be home now".
Wise words. I've been fortunate to have lived, all my life, on or within a mile of a great body of water - Lake Michigan (now), the Atlantic Ocean, the Mississippi, Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River....which, despite a lot of bad press and hard times, is still a majestic body of water, through which great freight ships pass day and night. Hearing the fog horns at night growing up in Detroit was wonderful music to go to sleep - just wondering where those ships were going and what they were carrying.
Wow… Is it the love of the sea or is it a curse that compels me to be near? I now live straddled with the intracoastal less than 10 feet from my back door and the beach across the street from my front door. I don’t think it is the sea that draws me as much as what the sea offers. I love seeing the ships, Dolphins, Manatees, and the sound and sight of the waves crashing on the beach. Believe me… if I was inland I would have paid half of what I did for the same size here on the ocean. I truly do love it and the draw is immense. I wouldn’t trade it for nothing. What a nice curse, and besides... I have to live with the witchdoctor that casted the spell…

Never thought about it.WE have lived on the coast are whole lives. So we might take it for granted sometimes. But my dad was in the Coast Guard for 24 years and my brother was in the Navy for 22 years. And I commercialed fish for 15 and worked on the charters before that back in my younger days.So it might be in the family blood so to speak. We still go out on the ocean fishing once in a while.
Ever since I was a child I have been drawn to the sea. We would go visit my grandparents in Maine. I could always be found down on the pier just sitting and watching the sea. On a cruise I am content to sit in the Serenity area and watch the sea flow away behind the ship. I find it comforting, sort of like being in my Mothers arms.

Thank you everyone for contributing to our love of the water. When I wrote this I wanted to see the ocean so bad. We are 4 to 5 hours away from the Gulf, so it is not something I can walk to, so that might be the reason for my desire.
After I wrote this I booked us a last minute trip for the weekend, but then decided against it.
I am glad I am not the only one who draws peace for the sea.
After reading this thread, I have decided to book another cruise.
We are close to the sea here in Palm Coast, Fl. and we go to the beach quite often, but a cruise is very relaxing and I enjoy sleeping while the ship is gliding over the ocean.

Actually my wife loves the sea...I enjoy the ship more then the sea. I love the service and having everything done for me.
What I do like is the calmness once out on open waters...at night when you dont see anything...and all you hear is the ship moving through the water.
Cant wait to get on that Crystal cruise in December.
Actually, I feel like buttons16 and his wife. I love cruising...but the sea, not really. I think it's more the calming affect of cruising. The great service...siting outside on the balcony with a cup of coffee, tea or?? Watching us pull into a new port early in the morning when all is quiet...starting a new adventure of the day....
A few months ago, in prep for our next cruise in September, we thought it would be nice to enjoy a 'land cruise'. We traveled about 4 hours to the ocean, then rented a beautiful motel room. The balcony provided a panoramic view of the bay. Wonderful....till that night. The waves crashing against the rocks kept me awake all night. One would crash...then I would wait for the next, then the next. We had to change rooms!
Yeah...I love cruising...but the the ocean alone, doesn't do it for me.
Luanne, My mother's family comes from Eastport Maine and other points along Maine's rocky coast. My Grandfather's ancestors were among the first to settle the town of East Machias Maine. They all made their living from the sea. My uncle went to war on the great ship Queen Mary. You might say he was cruising before cruising was cool. When he got out of the service he settled in Rhode Island in a home on Wickford Harbor. Where he was able to walk out his front door and take a swim in the sea. He always had a boat. I remember going on his boat and sleeping up under the bow as we went along. He is now 98 and still living in his little house by the sea. My Mother also was drawn to the sea even though we lived inland in Massachusetts we were always within an hour of a beach. I think it is something that is within us. I have always felt drawn to the sea. In the years I was in NH I was within 2 hours of the ocean and went to the ocean as often as I felt the pull of the ocean. Do you think it is a natural feeling in all of us? I do.
