Default RIP George Jones

There probably aren't many of you out there but those of you who are afficiandos of Country Music will be saddened to learn of the passing of "The Possum," George Jones. In case you think it's just country music fans who loved his voice, think again. Some of the biggest names in the business were in awe of George Jones. As the AP reported, besides Frank Sinatra, Pete Townsend and James Taylor to name just two more, held him equally in awe. His lasst huge hit that I remember was his biggest and probably the one he'll be most remembered, "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

I once met George while hanging out at the local radio station back when I was about 15 when I was a kid with dreams of becoming a DJ. Suffice it to say, in reflection it was an hilarious evenng, of that I assure you; especially when one considers anything other than beer was, at the time, illegal. And yeah, I'll testify that at even that many years ago, could that boy put it away!

He'll be sorely missed, at least by this "young'un."

I'll miss George. He was one of the old school country people that I enjoy listening to.

He was: "Hotter than a two dollar pistol".

He'll be missed.

Take care,
Mike

I like 'The Grand Tour'. It is biographical for Possum in a way and came out the same year I graduated from high school, when it was a huge hit.

His music was 'real' country and not the pop music that passes for it these days. He was scheduled to perform here in Huntsville this coming July. Ironically, so was Elvis in 1977 and then he died a few months prior to the planned performance

Given his 'robust' lifestyle, it is surprising he lived to be 81.

Arlene and I are big fans of George Jones. The only time we saw him in concert was in the armory in a small town in southern Alabama. We have tickets to his final concert in Nashville next November that was to bring together so many of his friends and fellow entertainers. Since we also have a prepaid hotel room, we are hoping that his friends still have the concert in tribute.

Marc

PS Dave, the Huntsville concert was supposed to be tomorrow but was postponed to July due to his hospitalization.

George was a great singer who could put heart and feel into any song.
His hit "He stopped loving her today" is truly the national anthem of country music.

I will miss him as well. The love story between he and Tammy was one of the best. Boy did they love and fight.

My favorite song was "He stopped loving her today", and my favorite story was one night George's wife took his car keys away, so he couldn't go to the store for more beer, so he got out his riding lawnmoor, and was stopped by police going down the road.

Dave, I saw Elvis's last concert he did in Atlanta in 77, and cried through the whole thing. He was in such bad shape. Many people got up and left, but I stayed, because I couldn't believe he was so lost. He didn't remember one song.

I was in the Marines when Elvis died and was on temporary duty with the Marine Reserve air squadron at NAS Memphis from my normal duty station at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. It was like the whole city had lost their best friend. Lots of emotional people.

When Elvis died, I was working at NYPD, and was at the Broadway Show of "Chicago". We hit the intermission, and word spread through the crowd that "The King" had died. Very sad, indeed.
