Has anyone had any experience using Skype onboard a cruise ship, whether in or out of port? We are leaving two toddlers at grandma's for 11 days and would like to see and talk to them while on our trip. I plan to take my laptop with built in camera. It would be a lot cheaper then searching for a working pay phone and using a card that actually works in the every country. MSC Opera has a wireless card available upon arrival that will allow you to use your laptop onboard.

Default Skype works

I used it 2 years ago on NCL. From my reading it sounds like most ships are using the same service to provide internet. One the last trip, I did need an ethernet cable, but nbd. The bandwidth was enough for me to call home and check on my 15 month old. This next cruise I am leaving 2 babies behind, a 3.5 yr old and an 18 mo old. I am planning to use skype and even bringing a webcam. I am not certian that the bandwidth will support it but I have to try .

Hi kmchaos,
Thanks for the reply. Your two little ones are almost identical in age to my two boys. I was intending to take my webcam too, but wasn't sure if the bandwidth would support it either. When is you cruise? Ours is May 2. Whomever goes first should let the other know how it went.

I was pleasantly surprised to find I could use Skype on our cruise. It was a little jumpy on the video, but the audio was just fine. Good luck on your cruise.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm set up with Skype, excited to use it and save on phone calls!
