Default Get Lei'd cruise reading

Hi all on the Get Lei'd cruise for January ... just came across this email message here under Hawaii with good book recommendations and a tour spot online ... just some info to add to your cruise file.

Harry

Aloha Noa,

Before you leave go to a good bookstore and purchase these "blue" books:

1. The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook
2. Maui Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook
3. Hawaii The Big Island Revealed:The Ultimate Guidebook

If you cannot find the books then go to this website: www.wizardpub.com

Rent a car with another couple or do your own thing..it's cheaper and lots more fun than being with a group.

Hi Noa,

I'm also in the middle of preparing for our Hawaiian honeymoon cruise. While I haven't booked anything through it yet, I did stumble upon the following website:

http://www.tombarefoot.com/

It seems to have quite a few local excurisions. For most of the major islands too. I've compared the prices to carnival and it's much cheeper. If you book directly (not through carnival), make sure that you have some way to get to the excursion. Many will come and pick up everyone from a boat. Just makes things a lot easier. Like I said, I haven't book through the site so I can not speak to th quality of the excursions, but I'll bee looking into it again pretty soon. Best of luck!

Adam

I'm gonna get a Fodors Guide ... maybe we can compare notes. I also saw that DVD offer in my Cruise Travel magazine ... gonna order that, and I will ask Art to burn us copies.

Sounds good! I'm still debating (and reading up) on the Arizona tour vs doing it on our own. I've never had the opportunity to go see it before and don't want to miss it this time around. Right now it seems most likely that we'll get a rental car for Oahu. No idea on tours otherwise.

It seems the rental car is the way to go from what I've read. Jerry and Kirk went in January, though, and they said the rain made it kinda scary for driving. I'll have to read up more on it.

It seems to me that it would be easy to do teh Arizona on your own ... and I did just read here that it was far less crowded than with the ship.

After the rain we've had, how scary can the Hawaiian rain be? I guess the only issue would be if they shut down the exibit due to the weather. That would be a major bummer.

I was in Hawaii last March and on Oahu definately rent a car and do the Arizona by yourself. You HAVE to get there as early as possible as they give out tickets for tour times. The wait can get pretty long. We got there at about 9am and I think we had to wait until about 10:45 for our tour time.

As far as driving on the island definately drive up to the north shore on Oahu. It's beautiful up there and they have some big waves in the winter months.

A great car rental company is tradewindsudrive. If you are resourceful you can figure out the website for them. = ) They have great rates! We stayed 7 nights and our rental was only $114 for the week including all taxes and that was including the under 25 age fee. They will pick you up too.

Oh I can't wait to get back to Hawaii. Maui is my favorite, definately rent a car there too. Although, the ship anchors in Lahaina which is a very cool little town to shop and eat. So you wouldn't need a car there if you didn't want to do anything else. I think we will go to the Iao Valley and see the waterfall, maybe up to the volcano crater at Haleakula if time permits. The drive up to the north shore, around the Kapalua area is very pretty too, lots of places to stop on the side of the road and they have blow holes in the rocks down on the shore.

Jan 6th cannot come sooner!

Let me know if you have any more Hawaii questions, I have been all over Oahu and Maui. Been there twice.

Hi Rob!
Thanks very much for the info!! I have a question - after what I've read, it seems to be quite time consuming to get a rental car in Maui. Having to take a shuttle to the airport to get the rental, coming back to pick up your party (since the agency shuttle will only take the driver back to their office), and then having to do the same in reverse when you're ready to return to the ship. Do you have advice on a rental car agency for Maui? If it becomes too much of a hassle, we'll definitely just do the ship tour.

Thanks!

Shar

In Lahaina, where the ship anchors there is a car rental place called Island Riders. They rent out exotic cars, harley's and the traditional Jeep Wranglers. The pricing on the jeep is $69 for 8 hours. Not too bad, if you consider the convenience of it being so close to port. Another place right in port in Lahaina on front street is called Aloha Toy Store. Again they specialize in exotic luxury car rentals but they have jeeps and VW convertibles and some other moderately priced options for the day.

I do believe some of the major car rental chains have Off-Airport locations in and around Lahaina so there are options besides the airport car rental agencies on Maui.

Before I started cruising, I used to land vacation during the winter months in Waikiki Beach. And since then we've cruised to or from Hawaii three times.

Rob gives good advice regarding car rentals. Unless you want to do a water based tour, like snorkeling or diving, or a heli tour, a car really is the way to get around and see alot of each island in each port of call.

Hi Kuki!
Other than your golf trips, are you looking into any group tours?

Shar .. ABSOLUTELY!! I haven't started working on anything yet (even the golf<G>).. but we'll certainly have at least a couple of options for groups.

Last trip, we got everyone who rented vehicles and had a convoy to Volcano National Park. Think we'll try the same thing again.. but with maybe a picnic lunch somewhere.

I figure I can probably even get the ship to put the "picnic bags" together for us.

In Ohau pre cruise last trip, we had a gathering at the House Without A Key. A BEAUTIFUL spot. Since the ship is in port late there this time... maybe we can do a group sunset drinks or dinner.

Shar.. guess they are being shy <G>

Pretty soon I'll get an e-mail list from Nancy of everyone going, and send out a group e mail to encourage some pre cruise chatter.

If we did a Luau it would have to be in Honolulu. My suggestion is Germaine's Luau. I did it last March when I was there and it was great!! Great secluded location west of the airport past pearl harbor.

Just a suggestion.

On the original Let's Get Lei'd cruise we arranged for a group discount for the Luau at the Old Lahaina Luau on Maui (and had a great time).

As we move along, and find out how many are interested, I'll be happy to see if we can get a group discount at Germaine's.

Honolulu is our only late stay port, so that indeed would be the only place we could do a luau.

Robert, LA and San Diego are usually sunny in January, with temps in the mid- to high-60s.

I heard the first day or two is chilly on board, but gets warmer as you head out farther.
