Hi Jerbo,

We're booked on the March 9, 2005 from NYC to Caribbean. Still reading horror stories about the service in Britannia, is it really still that bad. I was aboard in July and it was decent, I hate to think it got worse.

Look forward to hearing your comments.

Hi,
We found the service in the Britannia wonderful. The waiters remembered everything and were very proficient. My wife and I have been on 5 other cruiselines (also the QE2) and would rate the Queen Mary 2 up there with the best. Interestingly I found a lot of people like to complain. I think it is a form of one-upmanship. I was on such and such a ship and blah blah blah....... I'm sure you know the type. I had some of the best meals I have every had on the trip.

We enjoyed the Lotus as an alternative. It is a sampling of 12 dishes that were great. Make it a point.

La Piazza is the Italian place and I found it lacking. There are many good Italian places in our hometown so the comparisons with them were rough.

A downside of this beautiful and huge ship is that it is so big that we had to tender at St Martin, St Lucia, and St Thomas. They told us ahead of time that we would dock in Bardados and we got lucky that we could also dock in Martinique. I find tendering the biggest pain in the neck.

Because the size of the ship the folks in wheel chairs and walkers had a brutal time of it. They had trouble getting on the tenders and just getting around. One woman I became aquainted with was having trouble because she was in a chair and wanted to get off in St Thomas and had no one to help her. I told her that I would try to help. It turned out she didn't need me. The actual cruise director himself found this out and wheeled her off !!!! Very impressive!!!!!

Make sure you see the planetarium show. Very cool. It will be busy on your sea days so go straight to Connexions to get tickets then on to it. There are 3 shows.
Are we alone narrated by Harrison Ford which was the best
Then Infinity Express with Laurence Fishburn
then Stars over the Atlantic which I didn't care for but all of these are my opinion

I"ll try to add more tomorrow if anyone has any more questions. Oh they are being very lenient with sneaking alcohol on board when entering from the ports so you may want to bring a bottle on board in NY or any of the ports. We picked up a bottle of Red in Martinique and enjoyed it with dinner. But don't be too obvious of course.

hi jerbo,
glad to hear things are getting better and better onboard, we just booked for a transatlantic and can't wait to get back on board. Have the staff changed a lot or has that also settled now? It seemed to be a lot more settled last time we were on and i would be glad to hear that retention is up.

Did you sample the golden lion? Where Chilla, Paul and dan still there?

Jerry,

Thanks for the informative review and update on life aboard the QM2. I agree with you, people seem to get their jollies by ranting about this stunning ship.

Glad to hear everything in Britannia is running smoothly. Have heard many good reviews for Lotus, looking forward to it. Did you dine at Todd English, how was it?

Certainly, easier strolling down the gangway at port, though I love that dramatic view of a classic ocean liner like the QM2 as you gradually pull away in your tender and see it owning it's ocean berth with its commanding presence.

Glad you had a good trip.

Jonathan

Thank You in advace to a few questions. On this cruise are there 1 or 2 formal nights?. Does everyone dress in long pants at lunch? Are there a lot of day activitities on the days at sea?. I have to work when away, does it take more than an hour to tender off? I assume the crowd were very nice, we are seasoned cruisers and can't wait to be on a huge ship with a nomal capacity. Again thanks. My wife is worried that this cruise is super dressy.

Lexxity,

I heard quite a few bartenders have left the ship/resigned - something to do with them not being happy by the Princess takeover. Very long hours, little time off in ports.

Dan is still in the Golden Lion. He was one of my favorite bartenders along with Dora from G32.

Yey! Dan is fab isn't he? His dry sense of humor just had us in stiches, I hope he is still there when we next embark. It would be a shame if many had got off, can you explain about the princess takeover?
Many thanks
lexx

Hi all,

Let's see here,

Lexxity,

I love the Golden Lion. And of course we had the fish and chips. Way yummy!!! Although the cottage pie looked great. Thought we would try the Golden Lion as it was GREAT on the QE2. Also love the atmosphere with a great pianist. My wife and I like to gamble and it is across from the casino so if the gambling gets cold might as well go for an also cold Boddington's.

Jonathan,

Nope didn't go to the Todd English. Seemed sorta silly to pay $60 for my wife and I when the food in the Britannia was so good. (We really enjoyed our dinner guests, too!!!). But truth be told, we would have, but all the reasonable times were already booked. So we figured no loss. . Of course everyone we talked to raved about it. I did like seeing the ship from the tenders (took a great number of photos) and if you go to Magen's Bay in St. Thomas ask the cabby to stop at the top so you can get a great photo/photos of the harbor and QM2 too. Slip him a few bucks when you get in and he'll do it for you.

ipos4767,

We had 3 formal nights. Unfortunately I had only one tuxedo shirt. (I probably should have brought a second or had it drycleaned, probably had B.O., but again my dinner guests were great and never told me!!! ) We did discover very nice laudromats on board on each floor and did a wash on the last day when we were packing so as to bring home clean clothes. Makes your life easier when you get home. 90% of the men had tuxedos so I was impressed. I had heard of the "carnavalizing" that others had talked/complained about. Didn't happen. Men generally dressed for dinner. At lunch men seemed to look nice but casual with khaki shorts or the like at the buffets (which were good, again, I liked the Lotus with sushi and such). Never did lunch in Britannia though. The tenders may take awhile between waiting your turn to board and then the transit, so 45 -60 minutes may occur. You say that you have to work when away? They have the ship wireless so that you can bring your laptop and get on the web if necessary. They also have web access in the room. Try not to, it is a vacation, don'tcha know. As for activities on the days at sea, they of course had bingo, art auctions, art lessons, book signings and such. Anything in particular that you are interested in? You said that you travel quite a bit. I might recommend staying on board during a port that you are familar with. It's great to have the whole ship to yourselves.

Lexxity,

Embarrassingly I don't know anything about the bartenders. Maybe I was too busy with the Boddington's. (Or too many, )

Dan definitely had a great sense of humor. I came in one formal night with my hair all done and he asked me, "What the hell did you do to your hair?" Have to admit salon did give me some big hair (think J. Lo at the Oscars a few years back). Made me laugh because he had the chutzpah to say something!

I'm back on in January and I wonder if any familiar faces will still be around.

Apparently they brought on quite a bit of crew and management from Princess. Schedules have been changed to accomodate opening the King's Court earlier for embarking passengers and this created a massive shift in responsibilities. They are working longer hours (as if this were possible from what I could see - obviously I spent a lot of time in the pub and disco) and have less time for "enjoying themselves" after work.

Just some scuttlebutt I've heard.....

When are you back on? Did you post pictures somewhere on this board; I think I saw your pictures you mentioned in another post.
