Default What to do at Ports?

Does anyone have any suggestions for St. Thomas and St. Maarten?
We were thinking of renting a car and going to several of the beaches at St. Maarten, but we have heard that it is a dirty and unsafe place. We would like to do a sailing/snorkeling charter at one of these places- any suggestions?

Barry..
St. Mart. is fine for renting a car or jeep. I don't think u need to be overly concerned with safety issues.
We've done a private sail and snorkel out of St. Thomas to Buck Island that was wonderful!! We booked ours through www.portpromotions.com.
We had our own sail boat with a captain, and first mate. At Buck Island the mate became the underwater guide. He brought tidbits along to feed/attract the fish.
Had a GREAT day!
