In view of serious security concerns surrounding terrorisim by Moslem extremists in Egypt, I highly recommend sticking to the shore excursions offered by the ship if you wish to venture away from the port cities.
According to the reviews that I have read......the tour buses have an armed guard on board and they travel as a caravan from the port to Cairo with the private tour vans and cars. Interspersed is trucks with guards as an escort. Egypt takes tourist safety very seriously. They prefer that the private tours caravan with the buses to Cairo. If you are looking for more info check out this website : http://members.home.net/rridgely/cruise/cruisers.htm. This is a group that just got back this month from the Istanbul to Barcelona cruise. Several of them wrote reviews that talk about the tours either private or ship. You can also email them to ask specific questions by going to their forum.
Thanks for your input. As a matter of fact, I already checked the website above and contacted the people who wrote the review ( based on your earlier posting).
This is why I asked the question that I asked because I realized that there is security only going INTO Cairo from Alexandria but NO security IN Cairo/Giza and on RETURN trip back to Alexandria.
Moreover, I just read another review from somebody who just came back and used Champion Tours. Champion did NOT follow the caravan and went ahead to beat the crowd ( which was great since nothing happened). But what if ??
As you know US military is in the highest state of alert in the middle East.
Alex: i understand fully your concerns. however, as you know, security anywhere in the world is never guaranteed, and when traveling in areas outside of your own, you use a little more care and are a little more sensitive to the culture of others.
this is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure for alot of us, and you have to be willing to blend in and make the most of what you are offered....don't be hesitant to express your concerns to your tour people though, they will try to keep things calm and proceeding on schedule. (This is my first time, too, but I am determined to make the most of whatever happens.) God Bless and Smooth Sailing!!!!
