Booked Cat. "VF" Guarantee on Oosterdam departing San Diego on 11/25/06. Have been watching the cabins go and return to booking web site. Now there are only 2 cabins left that are available from my booking Cat. or above, they are in Cat. SZ. Has Holland America saved cabins somewhere between these for people who have booked Guarantee? Or will we be in Cat. SZ? Or do we have a problem and will be downgraded?
If the booking web site you are looking at is an on-line site, it may be that they booked a block of cabins and the SZ's are the only ones they have left. That doesn't mean that HAL doesn't have cabins in your category available or other categories.
If you go to HAL's web site, www.hollandamerica.com on the lower left hand side you will see For BOOKED GUESTS, click on this, then click Immigration Form and fill it out and submit it. The cabin # will be listed as 0000 if one has not been assigned to you yet. As the date of your cruise draws nearer, keep checking the Immigration form. Eventually you may see that a cabin has been assigned. However, sometimes the number are not assigned until you get your docs and sometimes, you won't know the # until you get to the pier.
You will not be downgraded as you have booked an VF Guarantee - it may be a VF or higher. It would be nice if you were upgraded to an SZ as they are wonderful cabins, but don't count on it.
Thanks DeeDee, I've checked several on-line booking sites and they all indicate only 2 SZ cabins remaining with verhandas. Checked with Holland America web site and it says they are all closed except for the 2 Cat. SZ cabins and Cat. C and lower. Just want to be sure we have a cabin. 8)

Actually it will probably say: Guar for guarantee: that is what mine says: we are sailing a few days after you. You will not be downgraded so you don't have to worry. I check almost everyday as well. Normally, from what I have been able to find out cabins are not assigned until about 2 weeks prior to sailing: we can always hope!!! NMNita :o
Don't worry, you'll have a cabin. I gather you have paid your final deposit, right?
If you have your booking number, which your booking agent should have given you, then just keep checking the Immigration form after you fill it out. I would do that now.
We always book a specific cabin. That way we don't have any worries about the category cabin we end up with. Twice we've been lucky and received upgrades.
Yes, We have made our final payment and have had the booking number since we first booked the cruise. Several times on this line and other's we have booked a Cat. Guar. and have been upgraded. This is the first time that we have booked a Cat. Guar. that is with a Verhanda and have had the ship fill up for the Cat. we booked plus all the Cat. above (except for the 2 cabins in Cat. SZ). Thanks for the info. 8)
so far, ours hasn't filled up at all, but we have 2 months yet. There were a couple of cats closed for awile, now they are re-opened; hope this is a good sign as we are cat G which may give us just a port hole. I can live with it, we did that on our NCL transatlantic last year. It just would be nice to have a full window or even better, you know what? NMNita
Have always booked guarantee with all cruise lines and never have been downgraded however you should remember that there are several price catagories on any given deck and could be higher in the middle or less expensive either aft or foreward.Pull up decK layout and you will see what I mean. There have been several times where we only moved up a couple of catagories on the same deck but most of the time to a higher deck based on number of cruises with that line. Good luck and stay with guarantee unless you are hung up with a special cabin or location.
I have foung that H.A.L. assigns cabins just over one week out. Our cruise this coming Sunday was assigned last Thursday which was 10 days prior. You almost always get the same generic category as you guarenteed. It is rare to move from inside to outside, outside to balcony, or balcony to suite.
For instance on our coming cruise we had a guarantee cat. G outside and ended up with a category C outside, which is essentially the same cabin, but a far better location and no obstuction. It would have been most unusual for us to be assigned a balcony or a suite.
Chuck is right about assignments: they usually (HAL that is) do not assign til 1-3 weeks out, but as for upgrading; HAL is one of the better lines with this. I have had many cliants go from standard outside to veranda suites and veranda suites to full suites. Like all lines, they do like to fill the upper catagories if they can. The problem, the higher catagories sometimes do sell out faster as there are fewer of them. NMnita
