Default May, 2008 Oosterdam inquiries

New to cruising, new to message boards. Sailing out of Seattle in May for Alaska on the Oosterdam. Would appreciate any thoughts about the dining (unfortunately we are wait-listed for early dining), cabins (we are in Class SY, a superior verandah) on the upper Verandah deck close to the middle of the ship, entertainment, etc. Any help at all will be appreciated!
We are married and age 62.

Default Oosterdam Cuising

Hello,

We cuised the Oosterdam last January 12 th and loved it. That was our seventh cruise and the first with Holland American. The ship is elegant and well layed out. We have cruised with Celebrity and two other lines and think that Celebrity was the best of them all but Holland American is a close second. We took an early seating and had absolutely no trouble. Overall, the food was good in the main dinning room and at the upstairs buffet. The room layout was comfortable and the room service was first class. The itinerary on the Mexican Riviera cruise was interesting. We took two low cost excursions and thought them informative and a lot of fun. We explored one port on our own and found it a typical Mexican town. One has to be open minded about Mexico and any country that they visit while trying to understand how the people live and what their expectations are. We loved the cruise, the ambiance of the ship, the service of the line, the food was good, the entertainment superb and the people we met first class. Our next cuise will be on Holland American !

Default Alaska

Hello,we took our first cruise on the Oosterdam to Alaska last August. You are in for a wonderful time. You will enjoy your balcony very much, especially when you spend your day at the glacier. The captain will attempt to get as close as possibe. We took a thousand fantastic pictures. The weather I hear in May can be drizzly and foggy however it may be sunny. Alaskas weather is hard to figure. We booked an excursion out of Juneau that took you by air over glaciers to a lodge called TAKU .The salmon grilled outside and the cole slaw{the best my wife ever had} the fresk baked rolls and baked beans where perhaps the besr meal we had during the week and that is saying something because we enjoyed the food onboard very much. The meal we had at the pinnacle grill was supurb and the dessert was great. My wife bought the recipe book at the TAKU LODGE. There was a Bear at the lodge who came in while we were eating to lick-up the grill. The bear was tattoed on his chest with grill lines. We enjoed everything on board the casino actually won a couple bucks. The shows were good and the cruice entertainment was full of energy he seemed to be everywhere.Icould go on and on ....Have a great time ans if you any questions I would be happy to try and answer them........Mountain Dog

Default Oosterdam/AK/May

Thanks for more great info! Yesterday, while making a Pinnacle reservation, I inquired if HAL yet knew our cabin number (we booked an SY thru our TA). The very nice gentleman replied he did not, but it appeared there would be a "chance of an upgrade to an SS". I looked at the HAL book diagram and the SS's can be right beneath the Lido which I've heard can be noisy?? We intentionally selected the SY due to its having cabins above and below us. Now...IF this "upgrade" occurs, can I decline it? Given this is our first cruise, we have lots of questions!

Default Oosterdam

This is a very beautiful ship, great service great food. The ship has a nice floor plan.We were on it on a short pacific Northwest Cruise and we rate it very high.
Go for the first seating if you want to catch the early entertainment.

Cheers
