Alaska cruise on Statendam

Just returned from a great 12 day cruise/land tour on the Statendam. The cruise was certainly not what I anticipated, but I had a great time, just the same. First of all, Alaska was hit by what was termed as the worst storm in 75 years, affecting all the ports and Anchorage. Lots of rain and high winds. The captain decided to bypass Glacier Bay, and go directly to Seward, due to storm. We were refunded our port fees and offered a free glass of champagne at dinner. While at the pier in Seward, the ship lost all power for approx 2 1/2 hours. Dinner was either ham/cheese or egg salad or cheese sandwich, and uncut fruit for dessert. There was no reason given for the outtage, just "We're sorry." The rail portion of the tour, from Denali to Anchorage, was terminated after approx 2 hours, due to the rail being washed out by the storm. We were transferred to a bus, and finished to trip into Anchorage via bus. I know none of the problems were HAL's fault, but I find it funny they haven't acknowledged all the disruptions of the trip. What do others think? BTW, I had a great time because of the great group of friends we were traveling with!

Wow! Sounds like you definitely ran into problems with that one! Sorry it didn't meet with your expectations. Mother Nature just did not want to treat you well. I agree that HAL should have provided a bit more for your troubles to help ease the pain.

By contrast, we did a 14-day cruisetour with HAL (3 nights on the Zaandam and the 11 nights inland) and it couldn't have been better. We also lucked out and only had one day with some drizzle - unfortunately, that was the day we went on a tour into Denali park, so we didn't get to see Mt. McKinley. But HAL treated us wonderfully and we would do it again.

I feel bad for the problems you encountered - everyone should be treated to a nice Alaskan cruise.

We did a previous cruise to Alaska, during the same week, 4 years ago, and had wonderful weather. I must say, though, that Alaska is beautiful, in any weather! Oh, and I didn't mention that when we were going by bus, from Seward to Denali, that we were in hurricane force winds! I was must say that I was a might concerned. LOL

No one to blame, that is for sure, and we made the most of our time, going from place to place, in our rain gear. I have no complaints against HAL, but find it interesting that they haven't even acknowledged that the cruise wasn't all it could have been. Our cruise ended Wednesday morning, after a night in Achorage, and most our group had great difficultly flying out. Our flight left at 11:59 pm, and planes were just beginning to land/depart, so we were able to fly out. We were laughing, and saying that an earthquake would be next!

It was an Alaska Adventure for sure. I'm working on a review.

There were a lot of great times due mainly to the group, but HAL was not up to standards IMHO. I too have done the 3+11 tour and it was great, they really are organized on the land portions. They were off on this cruise.

At least our day in Denali was great and we did see Mount McKinley something only 20% of guests got to see this year.
