I like both the Pan Pacific Hotel and the Fairmont Waterfront (right across the street). Both are higher end, but you can usually find them in the "Entertainment Book".

Both are very near downtown, and Gastown (tourist area). And both are irght at Canada Place Pier (if your ship departs from there).

People also often get a good deal on the Renaissance Hotel using Priceline. Also a nice hotel.

We "won" the Hyatt and Sheraton Wall thru Priceline for less than $80 about 1 year ago. Only book 4* and you could get a great deal. Next time we are going to look into the Pan Pacific. We walked around there and it's beautiful.

We took the double deck bus around the city. Both our hotels had a bus stop right outside. The pass is good for 2 days, all day, hop off and on, next bus comes every 15 minutes. We used our pass 4 months apart, it doesn't have to be 2 consecutive days. There are about 20+ stops. Great way to see the city and go back and see what you want. We stopped in Stanley Park, went to the Aquarium, took the free tour of the park on their tour bus; offered in the summer only, stopped at the top point in Stanley Park for the view, on down to the beach where you sit on actual logs from the ocean and had lunch at a local restaurant, caught the next bus then got off at Granville Island stop, Starbucks right there and toured the artists booths and stores, went thru Chinatown and Gas Lamp but never got off. We paid everything with a credit card and let them do the conversion for a nominal fee instead of getting CDN $. We walked around town and found nice cafes for breakfast and lunch. We fell in love with the city and you will too.

We cruised HAL's former Westerdam back in 2001 and really enjoyed the service. The food was great and the entertainment is our most memorable yet, very professional. We hope to try another HAL cruise one day soon.

Default HOJO

In 05 we stayed 4 nights at the Howard Johnson (HOJO) in Granville St, only 5 min walk from city centre, area not too good, but hotel good value, about 3 star I reckon. We paid $60 a night from memory with brekkie. We walked across bridge to Granville Island from there.

Hope you enjoy!

I got a fantastic rate at the Renaissance on the harbor for our May 16th trip. The Holiday Inn Hotel/Suites closer to the harbor also had good rates. I went to the Renaissance site and they had their specials. They change frequently. If you belong to AAA there is a discount.

Hope this helps

Gastown for sure - it's still a great place just to wander around and the shopping ranges from prettty much normal to very eclectic. Ignore the panhandlers!!! Pacific Centre is a very nice mall - plenty of stores for the ladies. Robson Street also offers some brilliant buys.

Check out Stanley Park - the beaches are beautiful but you will probably still see some of the storm damage further into the park.

If you want to get a little more adventurous, hop on the SkyTrain (you can catch it at Pacific Center or Gastown) and head out to Metrotown - it is a very, very large shopping centre with tons of shopping venues. There is a little restuarant called Su Shi Ya (sp?) near The Bay Store. If you like Japanese lunch is all you can eat for $9.95 and the food is the greatest. We go there every chance we get. The trip put will show you many areas of Vancouver and Burnaby that you wouldn't see otherwise.

The Vancouver Museum has a great collection of "Old Vancouver" clitch - decade by decade.

Be careful around some parts of Vancouver - like anywhere near Pigeon Park and parts of Chinatown. Lots of druggies and panhandlers.

You can also take the Seabus (Gastown area) to North Vancouver - there is a neat market area over there (not to mention I was born just a few blocks away lol).

Have a great time seeing the sights!

We flew into Vancouver and as we are walking out of the terminal there is a kiosk for taxi and limos. They were pretty much the same price with no traffic so we opted for the limo to talk us to the Hyatt. We paid with our credit card and they did the currency conversion. We also took the double deck bus around Vancouver and one of the 21 stops was Granville Island. It was a nice place to walk around and shop.

Rosedale on Robson is also very good, we had one night there in our post cruise pacakge in 05, prior to moving across to Howard Johnson in Granville St, half the price.

Granville Island is great (forgot all about that one lol) - lots of "artistic" shops. If you get a chance grab a beer from the Granville Island Brewery - they make a great Maple Ale. There is also a Public Market and they have the best baked goods - yum! There is also a watertaxi that will take you from the downtown Vancouver side over to Granville Island.

I agree with the LIMO suggestion - same price - great ride. Google "Limojetgold" at YVR for info.

Default Granville Island 'a must to visit'

I agree Granville Island is a must to visit. Great market and great microbrewery. We walked over the bridge to it and nearly got swept off by the winds, be careful and enjoy. Perosnally I thought Vancouver was similar in many ways to Sydney.
