Default Harry checking in from Ensenada

Hi Everyone,

Just checking in from an internet cafe in Ensenada on our second day of our 3 night cruise on the Monarch of the Seas.

Having a great time on this quickey cruise. Just got done shopping for some doggie clothes (got Andy a cop uniform, Steven and Maria´s pup a handknitted sweater and got an agent in our office a Jackie Kennedy pink coat for her pup. I also got to meet the owner of the store this time ... she uses all the money to adopt street dogs in Mexico.

After that, stopped at the music store for Art´s dad and then to the pharmacia for some antibiotics for Annamarie´s son. Next stop is a margarita at the El Cid Hotel, where we stop every time.

We lucked out on the ship and got a table for 2, which is making the short trip more relaxing.

Also the rain is pretty light here, compared to what is hitting north of us in San Diego and LA.

Anyway, gonna finish up the email, then off to Tequila land.

Cya all on Monday!

Harry

Hi Harry
We will be on the Monarch of the Seas on May 2/05 and are curious as to what kind of weather to expect and what temps. There will be 6 of us arriving at LAX at 11:00 and we would like to know what would be the most economical way to get to the pier. Any info you can give us regarding this cruise and ship would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Marie and Rick, the shuttle is going to bet the most economical.

Here are the two companies web sites:

www.primetimeshuttle.com

www.supershuttle.com

Should run about $60 or so for your group.

Weather in May is usually night and morning low clouds, which burn off to party cludy skies. Temps about 68-72.

Harry, I was wondering if you could recommend a hotel in L.A., maybe near the airport. We will be staying over on Friday night after the cruise and would like something that has shuttle service to the airport. We would also like to visit the "sights" in L.A. on Friday . Could you recommend a tour that would include Sunset strip, Hollywood etc. Thank you once again.

Marie and Rick, since it's only one night and to get you the best rate, I would search for hotels on Hotwire.com. You can search in the LAX area, and any hotel 3 stars or better should provide a shuttle to the airport. We normally save at least 40 percent on hotels this way.

I just checked those dates and they have a 4-star with shuttle for $87 a night (Wyndham style hotel) to a 3-star for for $51 (Doubletree, Holiday Inn style). I've always been happy when booking with them.

I also have a great sight-seeing recommendation that I will post under a separate heading here. I just wrote an article for Cruisemates about it, and will give details in the separate message. Look for "LA sight-seeing recommendation"

Thank you once again, you are very helpful. That excursion sounds very interesting but we would also like to see Mann's Chinese theatre, Beverly hills, sunset strip and maybe some "homes of stars". Does that tour wrote about include these sights as well?

Hi Harry
Need some more info re: Monarch. Do the ocean view cabins include a room safe, a fridge and beach towels? Also, do you know if we can bring wine on board?
Thanks

Marie, sorry to say no fridge or safe in the cabins. I am trying to recall on the beach towels, but I am 99 percent positrive they are not in your cabin but instead up on the pool deck.

Wine is allowed on board, but they will charge you a $10 corkage fee if you bring it to the dining room.

Finally, here is the link to the article I wrote about the great Dearly Deaprted Tour:

Harry

Want to know how the food was. Have cruised RCL twice and found the food decent
(but that was about 3 years ago) I have family that just got off the Monarch 3 day cruise and said it was horrible and another friend came back from the Brillance on an 11 day cruise just last week and said the food was poor. To give perspective I tend to be a food snob and like Celebrity although I don't choose my cruises that way. The two groups that have complained have never had complaints before and are not the snob I am. Will be on the Monarch on 3/18 traveling with about 25 friends and familys many of who are cruising for the first time. Would hate to have their expierence of cruising marred becasue quality has gone down so much

Debba, I cannot say anything more than I disagree with your friends' rating of the Monarch food. We did the 3-night sialing in January, and I was *so* impressed with the food. I chatted with our server (who was excellent) and she said that the ship had brought a new chef on board a year ago who revamped the whole menu. Everything was delicious, and the presentation was much more upscale.

I don't know whether it would be online with Celebrity, but I was impressed enough to ask, which says a lot because I am not much of a foodie (other than I enjoy trying unusual and new dishes while cruising)

Hope that helps.

Hi Debra,

I would agree with Harry...My wife and I went on the 4-day Mexico cruise and found the food to be good all the way around.

We are heading out again on the Monarch in April...Can't wait...

Yo VanWink's take me! Been dying for a cruise here, and the Monarch is great -- such a comfy ship.

And thanks Teeny about Andy ... I would tell him but it would go to his head. :-)

Hey all! I'm sorry to say I don't agree about the food on the Monarch, we just got back from the 3 day to Mexico and I thought the food was mediocre at best. I was extremely disappointed with the buffet too! But I must say that the service we received all around was awesome!!

Happy Sailing!

Dominic, I assume you are doing the Hawaii excursion. I would say other than heading down on your own, it's probably the best way in which to do it. We left from Ensenada in 2001 on the Norwegian Sky and stayed overnight at the El Cid Hotel before leaving the next day, and that was a nice way to start the cruise.

No Problem Harry...

We had to move our cruise back a week to May 2nd.....3 weeks and 3 days...

I read one of your posts (and I can't find it now....) regarding the best way to get from LAX to the pier at LA.

I know you mentioned a couple of shuttle companies. Are they less expensive than taking the "transfers" bus...??

Thanks again.

Gosh, I don't know where they have the prices posted, but a 50 minute massage usually runs about $100. Near the end of teh cruise, they will also do a sampler, with a facial, neck and shoulder massage for about $75.

Hi Harry
Could you tell me if beach towels are supplied on the Monarch. Do you know if we can bring soda on board? What is the best time to arrive for boarding?

Hi Marie,

Towels are provided ... I think they leave 'em in your cabin, or they are by the pool. Just can't recall on the Monarch.

You will need to pack the soda in your checked baggage. Try wrapping in Bubble wrap just for some extra cushion. I also usually put it in a large ziplock (I had a soda burst in our bag one time ... luckily, it was just in a bag with shoes.)

Usually you can start boarding about 12-12:30 on the Monarch.

Harry, will they confiscate the soda if it's in our carry on?
Thanks once again for all your helpful info.

Just read your article on "Short Cruises". It was very good.
Thank you for giving us "short timers" some credit.
