Default Renting a vehicle in Cozumel

Has anyone rented a vehicle to drive around the island? Do you need to reserve one in advance? We were thinking about getting a jeep and spending the day sightseeing.

Coz is an excellent spot to rent a vehicle. They're available right at the pier. No reservation necessary.

Hi, this is very true...however 3 little tips: 1. if in high season with over 5 ships in port..there are ways to book in advance and not end up in a hassle and price game for getting a car. 2. always get the insurance deal, even though Cozumel is a very safe island to drive..there are some tricks downtown and other. 3. pre-inspect your vehicle for previous damage, otherwise it will be billed to you.
Even though Cozumel is a very safe and quite hassle free area, there are still people that want to take advantage. Therefore, renting from an international accredited company is preferred. 4. be careful even on vacation..your family is looking forward to seeing you again home! enjoy!

Cozumel is one of the best places to rent a vehicle in my opinion. For one it is impossible to get lost, even for the most directionally challenged. It is very safe as well. Cars are also very cheap. We choose to rent jeeps every time because of the convertible tops and we usually pay around $40-50 for the whole day (seems to be a pretty standard price with all agencies). It’s so fun to drive around with the top down and it only takes a few seconds to put it up if you get a tropical rain shower. You can also leave the sides off the jeep in the rain.

On the other hand it may not be worth it for some, it really depends on what you want to do. If you only want to shop down town or go to the touristy bars and restaurants a car isn’t really necessary (a sedan can make a good locker though). There isn’t really too much in the way of shopping or “action? outside of the town. Shopaholics and finicky eaters may find it easier to stay close to town.

This isn’t to say the rural areas aren’t neat. It is quite pretty and there are some neat local places, but they are spread out a bit and the restaurants may not suit some. It’s great for people who don’t like too much touristy stuff, pretty less crowded beaches, and some local culture and real food.

We returned from our cruise and in Cozumel we rented a jeep from Alamo. It was great, driving the island and stopping at every beach that look inviting and every bar that looked fun!! We were gone almost 5 hours and still had time to shop and pay a visit to Senor Frogs on the way back.
