Default Atlantis - book the excursion or go it alone???

Hi everyone,

We are booked for a cruise leaving from New York to Port Canaveral, Great Stirrup Cay, Nassau, etc. We definitely want to see Atlantis. Since this stop will be at night (8:00 p.m.) and leaving the next day at noon, we are wondering if it is worth it to book the excursion or not. I've been reading several posts from people who say that the excursion is a waste of money in that there is too much walking and then you only really get to explore on your own for about an hour or so. All we really want to do is see the hotel, get that "Atlantis experience" and go to the casino. I'm a little weary and wondering if we should just take a cab ride to the hotel. We are really not big on the whole touring scene and like to go off on our own. Although, never having been there before and going at night, I'm not sure the cab ride thing is a good idea either. I'm just wondering what our best bet will be. Any ideas/comments/suggestions? Has anyone here ever been on the Atlantis excursion? Thanks so much!

I know if you are a hotel guest, you have full access to everything, but non-guests don't.

Honestly? There's really not much to see if you've seen the pictures. It's a hotel on the beach, has a lazy river ride (again, might be for guests only, its changed since I was last there), an underground aquarium and the water flume ride (as I call it). Expensive shops & that's about it.

Check over on the Royal Caribbean board, there's severa postings there about Nassau.

If you go at night, you will have no problem taking a cab and going into the casino. They always accept customers for the casino. It is during the day that they are very strict, they don't want the cruise people using the pools and slides and going through the aquarium as a "free" excursion. You still might not be able to get into the "big dig", but you probably be able to stroll around a bit.

I was one of the ones who gave a negative review on that excursion. Please do not waste your money. Take a taxi over and tour the Atlantis on your own - you will not be missing one thing....BELIEVE ME!! You'll be much better off!

I agree with bohmer, it wasn't all that at alll! I think the tour is more of a ploy to get you to shop in the little shops that line the street outside the hotel. The paid tour bus does not drop you off at the hotel, it drops you off 2 blocks down from it, and you have to walk the remaining way (by all the shops outside). Do it on your own. The taxi will take you to the doorstep and pick you up at the door step. You will be allowed in the the shopping area and casino. There is also a huge window inside where you can see some of the fish. The pay part was like any other aquarium...once youve done one, you've done them all. We were so ready by the end of the "Tour" to get back on the boat that we skipped the whole free bus ride back to the boat and took a taxi!!! I think the taxi ride was 6$/pp each way. My husband said he enjoyed the taxi ride more then anything else that day!

Kimbo - we did the same thing!!! We weren't about to walk back to that bus stop so all 11 of us jumped into a taxi. It was $4 per person for us and we all fit in a van....it was worth every penny!

Thanks so much for the info. We were figuring the tour would be a ripoff and who wants to go through all of that hassle when you are on vacation trying to relax?? We will definitely do the taxi ride. Thanks again!
