Default First trip on Norwegian Cruise Lines. Any Penthouse advice?

We are heading out to the Mexican Riviera on the Norwegian Star next month.
Although we have tried both Carnival and Princess in the past, we were hoping for a exceptional experience this time around.

My wife and I are celebrating our second honeymoon and to surprise her I got a penthouse suite level 8 aft.

Since we have never sailed with Norwegian before, nor had an upgraded room, does anyone have any advice about what we can expect?
Did I make a mistake in dropping so much for the room or is the upgrade worth it?

Guess I'm excited, but feeling a little buyers remorse at this point...

She is worth it and I hope we have a good time, but after being here at the site, seems that Norwegian may not have been the best choice all around.
Really would like your opinions and comments.
Would be a big help...
Thanks...

Never having a penthouse suite I can only go by what I have read, but apparently NCL does a better job with their suite customers than many lines.

Happy second honeymoon, enjoy your cruise. We will be on the Star 3 weeks from tonight.

We were on the Dawn in August, the sister ship to the Star and stayed in an AB Penthouse suite. It was our 10th cruise and we loved the ship, the suite , and the service.

Our suite had 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, living/dining area, and balcony. We also had the services of the Concierge and a butler. The concierge made all of our dining reservations and was always available to be sure that we had everything that we needed and were satified. She also had us meet her for VIP tendering and debarkation to the ports of call.

The butler brought us breakfast every morning, treats in the afternoon, and was wonderful.

This was our 4th NCL cruise and first in a suite. My wife, kids, and I all felt like we received the VIP treatment the whole week. We said that we would never go back to a standard cabin after this week. For us, it was much more than a nice cabin and worth the extra $$$$.

My husband and I sailed on the Pride of Hawaii in March in an aft Penthouse. We too had a butler and concerige. They made our stay very enjoyable. We had a very comfortable bed mini sofa, a table for four, cappochina machine, refrig, DVD, flat screen tv, large closets, whirlpool tub, flowers, fresh fruit and treats. The veiw from our aft balcony was great. Personally, I am not a Norweign fan but this cruise was great. (Excuse the typos)

You sould be spoiled rotten. Make sure you take advantage of all the perks the butler and conierge can provide. No cruise line has a better penthouse program. Access to food from any restaurant on the ship served on fine linen in your cabin. You want eggs bnedict and they are not on the menu just ask. You want a late night delivery of the chocolate fondue from the bistro just ask your butler. Reservatiion that night at the bistro call the concierge. Keep in mind the Butler and Concierge are not included in the $10 pp auto tip charged to your onboard account each day.

Priority embarkation
Butler service
Concierge service
Sparkling wine, gourmet hors d’oeuvres and bottled water
Invitation to VIP cocktail party*
24-hour room service with special suite menu
Full in-room breakfast menu
Hors d’oeuvres delivered twice during cruise
Fine linens, duvet and
feather pillows
Plush bath robes and towels, luxurious bath amenities
Fresh flower arrangement and fresh fruit basket
Priority boarding of tenders to shore
Priority disembarkation

Best of all a great view with a balcony out of the wind and weather.

Thank you all so much for the replies....
Very kind of you to take the time and help me out.
I'm feeling much better now.

Is there anything else I should think about or look to do when once we are on the ship?

Aloha,

Dave

You won't be sorry you upgraded to a Penthouse Suite! We sailed on the Sun last April in an aft AC Penthouse Suite on Deck 9 (9076). We had the port-side back corner of the ship and it was amazing! We could see everything on both sides of the ship and, of course, straight back past the wake of the ship. What a vista--and some amazing sunsets and sunrises! Here's what we LOVED about having a penthouse suite:

--The option of ordering dinner served in our suite, or on our balcony, from ANY restaurant on the ship! Only suiteholders have that perk. Just ask for menus from every restaurant when you get on board.

--Choices for a "hot" breakfast when you order morning room service; other passengers can have breakfast served in their room, but it's a choice of cold items. At breakfast time, we especially loved having a separate bedroom and French door with frosted panes--the butler could come in and set up our breakfast and if we weren't quite dressed yet, we had complete privacy.

--Being spoiled right off the bat when we boarded the Sun and found beautiful flowers, fresh fruit and a plate of chocolate truffles in our suite waiting for us. Hors d'oeuvres were served to us each night and that was very nice.

--Getting "processed" in the VIP Lounge the day we boarded. We walked right past the long, long line of other passengers waiting to board and were directed to a special Suiteholders entrance with no line. When we gave our name, they greeted us and very personably escorted us to the Lounge. They had a lovely buffet set up along the wall in the Lounge so you could grab a bite to eat or get something to drink while they were getting your paperwork ready. We've never gotten on board a cruise ship so quickly.

--The definite perk of priority "tendering" in ports (getting off the ship first at the ports where you are ferried ashore) was great.

--VIP disembarkation was simply fabulous. We "rendezvoused" with the other suiteholders in the ship's library that morning on the day we got off the ship and then we were walked off the ship by our concierge and taken right to our luggage and transportation--before the other passengers got off.

--A very comfy bed, an amazing view out the sliding glass doors in our bedroom, drawers, shelves and closet space to spare and extra electrical outlets. Our dressing room was wonderful and our bathroom was just fabulous--marble everywhere and stocked with all kinds of goodies. We even had a bathroom scale under the vanity (hello, we successfully ignored that all week!).

FYI, when you are out on the balcony, you can see people out on their balconies on the decks that are below and above you, but we didn't think it wasn't a big deal. We never saw very many people when we were out there except when we were arriving in port--or sailing away.

I can certainly "ditto" everything that everyone else has said so far on this posting. You do need to factor into your budget having a butler (in addition to a steward) and the additional tipping required.

Hope you have a lovely, romantic cruise--you will definitely be pampered!

Lesley

Default tipping the butler

How much is standard to tip the butler & concierge in a penthouse? Do you tip per day or at the end-our first penthouse is coming up. Does anyone have pics of room AH 12012 on the Star?? Thanks

If you are in a Penthouse Suite and order the chocolate fondue for the room, do they charge you the surcharge for the restaurant? Or if ordering off the menu for any of the charge restaurants?
