Default Was Biden Talking About Slavery- You bet Your Ass

Rangel on Biden’s ‘Chains’ Comment: ‘You Bet Your Life It Was Stupid’ | Politicker

This article states:

Rangel on Biden’s ‘Chains’ Comment: ‘You Bet Your Life It Was Stupid’

After Vice President Joe Biden infamously told an audience that Mitt Romney is “going to unchain Wall Street,” and concluded they are “going to put y’all back in chains,” Mr. Romney’s campaign cried foul. This was an obvious and unfair allusion to slavery, Mr. Romney’s surrogates argued.
Well, count veteran Congressman Charlie Rangel among Mr. Biden’s critics on the Democratic side of the aisle.

“The Vice President said he’s going to put “y’all in chains,’” Mr. Rangel told The Perez Notes in a recent free-wheeling interview. “Was he talking about slavery? You bet your ass he was. Was he using the vernacular? Yes, he was. Did he think it was cute? Yes, he did. Was it something stupid to say? You bet your life it was stupid.”

Republicans have called on Mr. Biden to apologize, but that doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Biden wasn't just suggesting conservatives are racist - he was saying we actually want to go back to a slavery standard.

Why is it the world has completely forgotten it was the Republican Party (Abe Lincoln) who freed the slaves? Why have we forgotten that it was Southern Democrats who historically became the southern "carpetbaggers" who dominated southern politics a passed racist laws for decades?

But when even a fellow democrat sees how stupid this remark by Biden was - you would think that would make news, right? No.... it just faded away with no coverage at all. Why am I not surprised that the mainstream media has not called for Biden to apologize? Because they also want to continue to foster the lie that conservatives are racist.

Honestly, I can't see how people want to make any kind of issue of obviously stupid use of words.

Romney did say he wanted to "unshackle" Wall Street. Biden stupidly changed "shackle" to chain.

But the more important point is still valid. Does Wall Street need "unschackling"?

Wasn't it an unschackled Wall Street, willing to deceive and cheat, that pushed the peddle to the floor, to drive the financial community withiin literally inches of the cliff?

Paul, I have to disagree with you here. There is no doubt Biden is a gaff machine but many of those gaffs, on both sides are really due to the media running with it.

I don't think Biden meant anything about slavery but that an unshackled Wall Street would impose an onerous financial condition yet again that would bind people to bad financial products.

We need to get away from the media and both parties jumping on inane remarks that are spun out of context.

We need to start intelligent dialogue that will move this country forward. I don't know if we will ever get past what our political system and our politicians have done to this country. We need some compromise not confrontation.

As a native New Yorker I can say that Rangel belongs in jail and not in congress.

I love how the media runs with mistaken word "Words meant one way but taken another way" We all have done this....even politicians are not perfect.

The Bible certainly doesn't condemn slavery. Which party are the bigger Bible Thumpers?

Yes they do. And of course no one bothers to read about the history of the US.

Manuel,

I read extensively on U.S. history, especially United States Navy history.

I'm currently reading a history book on the Cuban Missile Crisis, a history book on United States Navy heavy cruiser, USS Houston CA 30 at the Battle of Java Sea, and a biography of Joseph Vincent Paterno.

Recently, I finished It's Even Worse Than It Looks, about our non-functional Congress, a history book on United States Navy cruiser design, Vietnam -- A History, a history book on United States Navy vessel, USS Liberty AGTR 5, a history book on United States Navy vessel, USS Pueblo AGER 2, the book Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden—from 9/11 to Abbottabad, the book The President's Club, the book The Obamas.

And that's just this summer.....

So you can't just say that no one reads about U.S. history.

P.S. The photo you see just below my signature is a photo of United States Navy heavy cruiser, USS Chicago CA 29, in August, 1936, along the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. My dad served aboard her as gun captain, left gun, turret 3. This photo is special to me, because Dad visited USS Chicago on the day this photo was taken, and was so impressed with her that he requested posting aboard her when he joined the United States Navy in 1939. This photo is the only known surviving photo of USS Chicago CA 29, on her visit to Portland, our hometown.

Mean Dean, Im impressed by your reading. You should sneak in a book or two about the Army.

But you do know that not too many people are familiar with US history or working conditions in this country in the 19th. and early 20th. Century.

Thanks for the reference to this book. I looked it up on Amazon and I think I would like to read this. What did you think about it?

Take unions for example. They have been portrayed as corrupt and business killing. Well, there is some truth in that, we have seen that. However, unions were largely responsible for the wages and working conditions we enjoy today.

If you want to read a good book about Labor Unions I suggest :

Sidney Hillman by Matthew Josephson .

Marsdude,

It's a good read. It shouldn't take you too long to get through it. And by the way, if you don't mind the suggestion, you can probably check the book out from your local library, and save yourself the cost of a book which will be out of date in a few years.

It gives a historical perspective (which I prefer) on how we got to the point we are now. It lays more of the blame on the Republicans, especially Newt Gingrich, and in the 1980's how he tried to break long-time Democratic of Congress, by trying to prevent Congress from doing anything, in an effort to get the American people upset with Congress, and vote Republican.

It offers several solutions to the structural and procedural problems with Congress (none of which will likely be implemented), such as changing the fillibuster rule in the Senate, to implementing a mandatory voting law, like the one in Australia, where voters are required by law to vote, or face a fine.

It's kind of a sad commentary on the state of the broken U.S. politcal system, but will help you understand a little more about what's going on.

I looked him up on Wikipedia. What an interesting read.

So, do you see him as a positive or negative influence on our society?
