Nobody knows what to do and that includes our so-called leaders in DC.

It's a very difficult situation with no easy answers.

On one hand, no one in the world, with perhaps the exception of Russia, Syria, and Iran, condone something like this.

On the other hand, no one wants another war, with perhaps the exception of Russian, Syria, and Iran.

It's always best to try and solve these problems with diplomacy, whenever possible. But it appears Assad is not interested in diplomacy and Russia has their own agenda.

So, what do we do?

While to some degree I agree with the actions taken, as it seemed to be a measured response, it does create some major issues. For one, we just attacked another country. This is clearly an act of war. If another country did the same to us, we would officially declare a State of War and defended ourselves. Can we blame Syria if they were to somehow defend themselves?

The act of using chemical weapons on their own people is horrendous and inhumane. But it is a civil war and who are we to get involved? Are there not other countries who can do something? Anything? Do we always have to be the world's police? And by us getting involved, how will this impact problems in other areas? And if any negative actions occur towards us because of our illegal actions in another country, what then will be the consequences?

As I said, a very difficult situation with no easy answer. It literally is, damn if we do and damn if we don't.

As a Vietnam Veteran with a daughter currently serving in the Navy, I only hope and pray we don't have to get our young men and women in the military involved in another no-win scenario.

I also hope and pray that diplomacy will result in a peaceful change in the situation, but at the same time I don't see that happening. I do have to admit that I really don't have much trust or faith in any of the current administration charged with this because they don't have the diplomatic background or experience in situations like this. The U.S. is not a business, it's a country. And when mistakes are made, we don't lose money, we lose lives.

Pete, that is a very well written post and as another Vietnam Veteran, I agree with the issues that you bring up.

Those of us who served know how costly war is.

I had a feeling that you'd feel the same way, brother!

I just hope this administration doesn't do what past administrations have done and that is to get us into another conflict that, quite frankly, is none of our business, has no clear end result, and will do nothing, but cost us huge sums of money and the useless loss of lives. And all for what?

Pete, not only are these wars useless and expensive but they get a lot of innocent people killed. And the suffering continues for years.

The Doctor that I see at the VA said that my heart issues could be related to "Agent Orange'' .

Sorry to hear that, buddy! That's one thing I lucked out on in that they were not using it in the Mekong where I was. Hopefully, if that's the case, they'll know how to proceed. Take care of yourself! Glad they're at least acknowledging the possibility. As you know, they didn't admit anything about Agent Orange for a very long time. Same way they treated PTSD - didn't really exist - it was just our imagination. Yeah, tell that to my parents and my wife who have seen firsthand how it affected me!! My prayers are will you, brother!

I've got a VA appointment next week and among other things, I need to talk to them about that parasite that remains dormant for decades that you can get from eating fish. Seems it's very prevalent among people in Asia, but most Vietnam veterans never get tested. It was in the latest issue of the VVA Magazine; The VVA Veteran, a publication of Vietnam Veterans of America

When I was on the Upper Bassac River, we'd often be out on patrol longer than scheduled and run out of provisions. So, we'd drop a grenade in the river and whatever rose to the surface, was put in a frying pan. If we didn't eat what the locals ate, we didn't eat.

Hopefully, you'll get the proper care you earned and deserve!

Pete, I have been getting a 20%disability but now I have applied for an increase and I have the cooperation of four of my regular plus the one from the VA.

I hope that you get that test and that all works out well.

Thanks!

I've got an appointment to take a look at my tinnitus (ringing in the ears). It was caused by mortar fire and not much they can do. Problem is, after that incident and shortly after another incident where I got hit with shrapnel, which should have gotten me a purple heart, they lost my health records! Go figure!!
I had all the hearing tests and they say I have significant loss in that ear. I'm not looking for disability, but hopefully they can get me to an ENT doc who specializes in tinnitus. Really sucks trying to go to sleep at night with loud ringing. Thank goodness they did give me some trazodone, which is a great sleep med - non-addictive and no side affects. Would like to get some medical marijuana, but you know how the VA can be.

As my buddy said, "Growing old is not for the whimpy!"

Thanks Manny & Pete for your service.
It saddens me to hear about physical issues that your still dealing with after all this time.
I know the mental part of what you seen and know will live in you forever.

I still have a bracelet from a 1LT Ronald J. Janousek , USMC , LOST 8-9-1969 SVN
These are red metal bracelets that you purchased and the money went to Vietnam Vets. I've had this thing for a good 30 years .
