Default Sea Princess Experience

The food at Horizon Court is terrible, and this restaurant is very dirty. Personal Choice Dinning is good, but the quality of the waiters at Neapolitan Restaurant varies a lot. The ship doesn't seem that large from the inside and there are not many acitivities for young people. Services are not that good as they are always trying to sell you something like drinks. Room stewards basically wake you up every monring because they start to shout at each other (or just talk very loudly) at 7am. To sum up, I think this is an old boat with second (or third) rated staff.

wow, sorry you had such a bad experience; was it entirely bad or were there any good parts?

Just got back from the Star Princess and also found the lack of quality and service we came to know 2 years ago on the Grand. Food, meal service in the buffet and traditional dining and the overall attitude of the crew.
Princess is a fine cruise line, the needed services hopefully will return.

I had this ship booked for Alaska, then changed to the Vision of the Seas with a group I found was going. Wow! Now I'm glad I did. We were very pleased with the Vision in most aspects. I haven't been on Princess since Regal Princess - 1994. I was hoping to try it again, maybe this next year. On the two Princess cruises I took, always found bad service in the Horizon Court. The waiters would be standing around talking, when tables needed to be cleaned. Hopefully, all this will change. If you have a bad
experience, write to the company. I always do & hopefully it helps.

We just returned from a cruise on the Dawn. The ship was very clean and polished. The service was outstanding. They just couldn't do enough for you. Our Steward went out of his way to accomodate us. We called for coffee at 6:00 am and had it in less that 10 minutes. I'll admit the Food Court wasn't that thrilling and the casino really left a lot to be desired, but overall we thought it was an terrific experience. I guess you not only have to pick your cruise line but pick your ship as well!

We were on the Sea Princess for our Alaska cruise in July and had a absolutely wonderful time! The staff and crew bent over backwards for us. We didn't do the Horizon Court for anything but grabbing a quick snack at off hours, so it wasn't too bad. I'm sorry you didn't have the enjoyable experience we did.

Boy - you are scaring me. My husband and I are scheduled on the Sea Princess in February. Has anyone else had a bad experience on the Sea Princess? We have sailed on Princess for years and have always had a great time.

I am glad that we share the same view on Horizon Court. As for writing to the company, I don't think they will do much about my experience so I won't waste my time to bother. Moreover, I believe the best way to "protest" is to not cruise with Princess again.
Maybe I will try Vision of the Seas next time, hahaha. : )

I definitely agree with you and I guess we have similar experience.
Also, I don't think Princess will improve their services as long as this excess demand of cruising continues. Princess will try to limit their costs (like hiring less experienced low waged third world waiters) while increasing their revenues (like selling you drinks and those boring art auctions) thus maximazing their profits.
In the view of the corporate world, there is nothing wrong about these business practices, but these bad services will eventually push potential Princess customers to other cruise lines or even scare them away from cruising.

I agree that the Horizon Court was not the best in the world (esp. after being on the Radiance of the seas last weekend) the food was ok but the layout at the food stations really sucked. The dining room was good and the ship clean, our cabin service very good. We did enjoy our cruise except that there was wet paint and no sign, and my gift package was addressed to me and not the intended recipient.

Now where you are wrong is that you will not take the time to write to them. If you just choose to cruise on another line how are they to know that? And yes I did write to them, they replied, I replied, they replied and today I cancelled my booking on the Star and am going on the Vision. There will be another letter to them stating why I have done that. The experience on the Sea was fine, it's their head office that really picks my butt. Would I cruise Princess again? Yes, but not in the immediate future.

As for hiring staff from third-world countries, that is one of the "perks" of registering your vessel in some country like Panama, Liberia etc.(Most do that) If a ship was registered in the US or Canada they would have to hire people from those counties and pay appropriate wages and meet the more stringent regulations ie Canada Shipping Act. This would add costs and your cruise would probably triple in price and the cruise industry would go bust, or only the rich would go.

Just a different perspective on this, hope you enjoy your next cruise.

I was shocked by the conditions described by LtcM in the original post. The Sea Princess was our very first cruise on any ship and we were so impressed that we booked three more cruises with Princess. A friend recently sailed on the Sea Princess in Alaska and based on her report, she was more impressed than we were.

I admit that the conditions we experienced nearly a year ago do not necessarily reflect current conditions, so I am not dismissing the comments by LtcM as having any other purpose than to reflect his honest feelings. But, the one issue that bothers me is that in none of his posts does he give the date of his cruise. Therefore, no one who was on the same cruise can agree and disagree with his report.

You have a very good point, even though I think the matter is a continuous matter so date is not a matter.
Since I have nothing to hide, I can say that I cruised on Sept 21st to 24th, 2002 from Vancouver Canada to Los Angeles.

I will add my two cents to this posting. I was on the Sept. 24th sailing of the Sea Princess and was on Aloha deck. While I found that my room stewart was not overly friendly, he did keep my cabin in excellent condition and responded immediately to any request that I had. My cabin was near an area where the paper bags used by room stewarts were opened and they indeed made noise at an early hour I am sure that if I had mentioned this to them it would have been corrected, but since I was awake at the time I felt no need to do so.

I did not find the Horizon to be dirty and dishes were cleared. My biggest problem in the Horizon was that the cheese was in cubes in the morning for breakfast and not sliced. . .I love having cheese on a roll in the morning, but I was the only person that said anything about this. I had traditional dining and found my waiter, asst. waiter and head waiter to be top notch.

I found no one trying to sell me anything that I did not want. Being asked if I want a drink is not what I call over selling. You have the choice and do not have to purchase anything you do not want.

Overall, I found the crew friendly and very accomadating. If you want the posh, pampered cruising of yore, you really need to be looking at Crystal, QEII or Silverseas. The cruises that are main stream do an excellent job considering all the passengers want as much as possible for the smallest amount of money.

Enough already. The posts on this topic have gotten out of hand and serve no purpose for those interested in getting accurate reports on the conditions about the Sea Princess. If you were on the September 21 cruise, we welcome your comments, good or bad. Otherwise, letís knock off the verbal wars.

Is it possible that since it was a repo cruise and maybe a lot of crew members' contracts were up and the end? Then maybe I can see a lack of "interest". Just my 2c.

Richard,

All Princess vessels now have British registry. Their home ports are London, England, and Hamilton, Bermuda.

My husband and I are on the Sea Princess Feb. cruise to the Caribbean. I love reading these boards but you guys get me scared. I guess any given day or time things can be either good or bad. This is our first experience on Princess and we will be sure to let you know how it went. I just enjoy gettting away from teaching for a week and being with the man I love...oh yes and not having to cook! My husband is picky about the food, so I hope he finds it to be satisfactory. He loved Celebrity food and did not care for Carnival.
101 days and counting until the adventure begins!!!!! Peg

Well I am going on the Sea Princess on November 30 of this year. This will be my 15 cruise but the first one on Princess and I hope dont get disappointed. Not everybody has the same idea of each ship. I went las December on the Galaxy and Celebrity Cruises is super great but not everybody has the same idea. I am sure that I will have a good time.

How is the Sun Princess since they are in the same class? I realize that for every 5 negative reviews, 10 positive ones come along. Everyone's experience will be different. I try to find the good and shine the bad, unless it's something intolerable. I have no problem mentioning it to whomever is in charge. I plan to enjoy myself on the Sun Princess this coming April.

LindsayM,

I have been aboard MV Sun Princess five times -- including twice this year -- and have never seen any problems of the sort that the originator of this thread describes.

Then again, I never saw that sort of problem in either of two cruises aboard MV Sea Princess (the most recent being in November of last year), either....

I totally agree with you Norm. I have been on the Sea twice the Dawn twice, the Sun once, and I have never, and I mean never, experienced an instance where a member of a Princess crew was anything but professional or where the restaurant was dirty. Their ships have always been spotless and clean, which accounts for their consistantly high ratings by the CDC. As a matter of fact the Sea Princess just scored a 96 on their inspection this month.

My Sea Princess Experience:

I just got on the Sea Princess on November 30 of this year. I've been on 16 cruises but it was my first cruise on Princess and I think that this was a fabulous cruise. I found everything good, the people, the food, the cabin (inside), the service. I just came out of the Adventure of the Seas and I tell you that the food on the Sea Princess was better that in the Adventure. Everything was very neat and one of the different things I experienced on this line was the second formal night when they made the cascade with the glass and champagne. And if somebody that is latin, I can tell you that there is a lot of latin music so that you can dance.
