Default What Are Your Top 5 Memories Of Your First Cruise?

What Are Your Top 5 Memories Of Your First Cruise? Many of us have sailed more than once, but the first cruise was filled with anticipation, wonder and perhaps many other thoughts. Since that first cruise there have been several on CCL, RCL NCL. . .but the first one still stands out.

My first cruise was on board P&O SS Canberra sailing 16 days from Los Angeles, CA to Auckland, New Zealand. So my top 5 are:

#5 Arriving at the pier in San Pedro, CA and see the ship from the car
#4 Standing on the deck throwing long streamers over the side of the ship
#3 Hearing the ships horn blasting as the ship pulled back from the pier
#2 Cruising under the Gold Gate Bridge in San Francisco for 1st port of call
#1 Six days at sea in the South Pacific after leaving Hawaii and enjoying the incredible dinning each night on this proud British Ship that is no longer in service. Her last cruise was September 10--30, 1997. She was scrapped a few year later. I have the mini life raft of P&O Canberra hanging on my office wall. Circa Oct 1969.

Tom, like you I was so impressed by the lavish luxury of the ships. . .huge dinning room and all the food. Don't think we have had the joy of being at afternoon tea and music on our ships. . .must have missed that. OH ya, on the very first cruise on P&O SS Canberra which was a total British ship and crew, we had high tea every afternoon with tea and crumpets and select pastries. They were so wonderful.

My first cruise was on Celebrities Zenith. It was the Zeniths innaugural cruise. I think it was 1992. My memories are

1. My first site of this Enormous Ship (at least I thought so at the time)
2. Upon boarding sitting on the deck with our friends and the friendly Jamaican waiter coming by giving us these great rum caribbean cocktails.
3. The minute getting to our room the room steward "Alex" introduced himself making sure we had all we needed.
4. Sailing out of the harbor to begin our cruise. Everyone on deck, the caribbean steele drums playing.
5. Our first dinner in the dining room. Alot of funa nd a lot of rum! It was a great time. I am going on my tenth cruise in October. I think I am as excited as I was the first time.

Default This has to be a Love Boat Experience

I have to say this is the most romantic of all the replies to the thread I started on Memories.of first cruise. It is from another board I am on, but wanted to share it with Cruise Mates. This is a true LOVE Boat Experience. Read it and decide for yourself. Let us know what you think!

WOW! Whata 1st cruise!
Widowed the year before, in 1990 I booked the Dawn Princess, San Juan-Los Angeles. Decided to "check out" every sweet young thing on the 2 week sailing thru the Canal.
2nd night out, met this lovely young creature. We played trivia, walked the top deck in the Caribbean moonlight and talked.
3rd night out, same thing.
4th day, had our 1st date in Curacao. Treated her to pizza lunch on board. (big spender) 5th day saw her all day and evening 6th " " " " "
7th " " " " "
8th - 14th day same thing.
Never got around to "checking out" any of the others.
We've been married now for 18 years!

Our first cruise was on the Elation. We could not wait to board. Seeing the ship for the first time gives you the "wow" feeling. The beauty and the decour, the crew, the first look at your cabin, the food, the ports of call. We could not wait to book our next cruise.

Top five memories of the RCI Song of America (now sailing as Thomson Destiny) in November of 1988.
#5 The shocking small room.
#4 The view from the Viking Crown Lounge.
#3 The 17 foot seas the last night out (crossing behind a hurricane).
#2 The lump in my throat when the cruise was over.
#1 I planned ahead and sent hand-drawn Christmas cards postmarked Hell (Grand Cayman). The were in red envelopes, of course. My family was very surprised to get Christmas cards from Hell.

What a memory . I was not aware of this ship. I found a link to a video of the ship. Have a look and I am sure it will bring back some memories. RCL Song Of America

First cruise was on the Carnival Carnivale. My fiancee' had died on easter break and my my parents told me I needed to get away. So I found this thing called cruising. So 2 weeks before Christmas I left the small town of Xenia, Ohio and and headed to Miami, Fl to go on this cruise by myself.

Boy was I shocked.

5. The ship was HUGH
4. Loved the roommate they choose for me.
3. Loved the suite Carnival moved us to because the locks on our cabin door did not work. Was an inside cabin.
2. Free Alcohol and food.
1. Peace of Mind that I found.

Our first cruise was our 25th anniversary in 2002 on the Grand Princess. All I can say is what took us so long!

#5: The copious amounts of great food
#4: The Mayan ruins of Tulum
#3: Swimming with Stingrays
#2: My husband hypnotized as Garth Brooks as evening entertainment
#1: My husband crowned as Mr. Princess on Island Night

He must have had a sign on his head that said "pick me! pick me!" Considering he's not a fan of country, and doesn't even know who the heck Garth Brook is, it was an interesting performance, to say the least! And his coronation as Mr. Princess...well, that was the most memorable moment of all, one that will go down in our cruise hall of fame books, for sure.:o

Memories . . . . I loved the Song of America, sailed on her in 1998 towards the end of her RCI days, 14 days LA to San Juan probably very close to her last cruise.

I sailed on the NCL Southward in 1982, single cabin with NO surcharge! I remember sailing past the ssNorway, looking up and saying I'm going on that ship next year!

The food was awesome, great presentation. Everyone dressed nice every night, not formal but nice, shorts or jeans were not an issue. Several times during the cruise we got a glass of wine or Akvavit (Aquavit) on Viking night from the cruise line (no charge)!!!

I still enjoy cruising but my cruises between 1982 and the 90's were the absolute best, lots of great memories!

P.S. Thanks for sharing that wonderful video, Song of America was a class act.

Default Thanks for the memories

GREAT THREAD!!! Our first was Carnival Celebration, a "mega-liner" of 47k tons, for our 10th wedding anniversary. Top 5 are:

Size of the ship (also said "WOW")
The eagerness of everyone to offer me more food almost every time I looked up...
My wife (long wavy red hair at the time) getting picked to be the subject of a hairdressing class (and getting a free "do" out of the deal)
The REALLY great coffee (I have since always love cruise ship coffee)
The excitement of being at sea was (and still is) everything I thought it would be..

Would be remiss not to mention the really big hangover I had while docking the last morning...

Our first cruise was on P&O's Victoria (formerly Sea Princess) for Christmas 1997, we have loads of great memories (many reflecting other comments here), so I have tried to justify my reasons for picking the following, which are in no particular order.

An old guy at afternoon tea on Christmas Eve moaning about the Christmas music being played in the dining room. The waiters did turn the music down, but no-one told the guy as he left that he still had has napkin tucked into his pants

Realising on the second day that my wife had lost her handbag somewhere between Heathrow airport & our cabin. It turned up safe and sound after a waiter had found it & handed it in. We tracked him down & thanked him with a small sign of our appreciation, you would have thought we had just given him the world

Sitting down once we got back home, trying to work out how on earth the cruise line had made any money. If we had paid for the flights, hotels, food & entertainment we'd easily have spent twice as much

Our main waiter Anecetto Rod, who took great pleasure in lining up more & more OJs for my wife instead of starters. He also kept popping up in our video, unknowm to us at the time :-D

The Midnight buffets (pre 24-hour dining), especially the build your own sandwiches. We only wanted a hot drink, but hey it would have been rude not to join in

Thanks to all the cruise lines & staff who have made our memories over the years so great.

Alan & Katrina

Did a cruise in 1984 but then took 20 years off (for no logical reason we can think of!) so I'll mention our 2004 family cruise:

1). Being met at the airport by a Royal Caribbean rep and being herded unto a bus and delivered to the ship (Explorer OTS)
2). Food: so much of it. Walking around the first two days stuffing myself, being amazed at the amounts of food available, thinking this must be Heaven, then feeling so bloated by Day 3 that I thought it might be Hell! (have since learned to pace myself...)
3). The amount of activities and entertainment, all thoroughly enjoyed.
4). Missing our first port and being onboard for 3 straight days, and being glad to finally be on land again (have since learned to love sea days)
5). The Gold Medal our 15 yr old son won for playing video games

First cruise was on Royal Caribbean's Song of America in 1988.
She sails as the Destiny for the Thomson line now.
#1: Amazement at the size of the ship (37,500 tons)
#2: Streamers and drinks while leaving port
#3: Sending Christmas cards from Hell (Grand Cayman)
#4: Dropping anchor next to the Sun Viking at Labadee
#5: The sad feeling I had when it came time to debark
