Default PADI Scuba Certification

Has anyone taken this course on one of the cruise ships? If so, is it a real certification that you can continually use or is it a one time only vacation certification?

Thanks

It is a fully accredited course they offer. Although you should get certified before going.
get a few dives in also before hand. I wouldn't want to spend my vacation in classes.
U can get certified at home (bookwork and videos) then do your certifing dives in your ports if you wish. U really want to feel comfortable with your instructor I would recommend visiting several dive shops and talking with the instructors. if you take the course on the ship U have no choice as to whom is the instructor.

Either way if you chose to do it u are going to LOVE IT!

Both my son and my wife got their PADI certification on Adventure of the Seas this past March. The cost was $249 and included their (4) certification dives. The classroom and pool training was done during sea days so not really a big deal. The cost and certification were well worth it.

I'm so thankful for this message board. I knew I could get my answers here. I've written to RCI and PADI with this same question (over a week ago!) and so far have not gotten any response. I post it here and bam... responses. Thanks guys.

The cost is definately more appealing then around here. I've looked into getting certified and it's pretty much doubled that of the ship (plus the ocean around New England is not that warm burrrr) but I wasn't going to do it if it was just one of those vacation certifications. I can hardly wait now!

Thanks for your help

Oh, Ok, I am in Florida so looking at your location yeah Go for it!
It was fairly inexpensive here to get certified, and we have the nice "warm" water.
Good luck and Enjoy the sport! I feel crusing and diving are a great combination.
My wife doesn't dive so I pick several ports she wants to snorkel and I schedule dives that accomadate snorklers to, that way we are never really separated for the day and we both get what we want. Makes for a happy vacation for both of us.

Assume you are doing the Southern Caribbean on AoS. When RCI posts the new excursion list you will be able to see where they do the certification dives and the cost. My wife and son were supposed to get certified in Curraco but the water was too cloudy that day. So they did their certification dives in St Maarten and then also dove in St Thomas. I didn't go with them in St Maarten but did join the group in St Thomas and went snorkling. Enjoy!

thanks everyone... we're planning on taking it in St. Thomas because we want to swim with sea lions in Curacao.

You may not have a choice where to do the certification. That is something the cruiseline determines. If you are talking about swiming with the sea lions at the Aquarium in Curraco you can also do a dive there that doesn't require certification.
