Does anyone know when they are going to start building this madly, insane ship? Are the facilities in Norway big enough to handle something that large?

During its sea trials, it'll probably come up against a rogue wave & probably just spit at it & go, 'HAH!'. "I am Genesis of the Seas!"

Construction of the lead ship probably is well underway since they announced the order a few months ago.

Are the facilities in Norway big enough to handle something that large?

Obviously.

To put the size of the ship in perspective, though, it's less than half the size of the early "supertankers" of the 1970's. Many shipyards throughout the world can handle vessels of this size.

Norm, I was meaning the size of the ship vs. the size of the wave which probably would be smaller. It was a joke. Hey, I'm Irish/Italian. I find humor in everything.

The big question I have is....What is gonna be its "home port"?Im hoping and praying that its gonna be Galveston!!We need a "mega ship" in Texas lol!!

Probably Nassau, like the rest of the Royal Caribbean International fleet.

That won't happen because the cost of registering a ship in the United States is prohibitive due to our government's requirement for U. S. crews.

By way of clarification of terminology, a ship's "home port" is its port of registry, painted below the ship's name on the stern, and has nothing whatsoever to do with the port(s) from which the ship actually operates. Unfortunately, some cruise writers have proved their ignorance by misusing this term in recent years.

The line has not yet announced the name of either the first "Project Genesis" vessel or the last vessel of the Freedom of the Seas class, which will enter service about a year earlier.

The 220,000 GRT Genesis ship will be launched in the fall of 2009. They have an option on a second. The sister ship of Freedom of the Seas is just over one year away from launch. It will be "Liberty of the Seas".

They are anticipating that sea levels will rise three inches by 2011.

Rev22:17-I apologize,I did not mean its "home port",I meant what port it would be operating out of!!Well if Galveston isn't going to get a "mega ship",do you think that Royal Caribbean will maybe bring in a newer/better ship for 7 day cruises to replace Rhapsody OTS anytime soon?Dont get me wrong,Rhapsody is a great ship,But I would like to see a ship leaving Galveston that has more things to do onboard,like the voyager class!!

Do you realize that the largest warships ever constructed, the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers of the U.S. Navy displace "only" 90,000 tons?

Interestingly enough, all U.S. naval ships are constructed to Panamax standards, meaning that all U.S. navy ships will fit through the Panama Canal -- even the Nimitz class.

I don't suppose that these new RCCL ships will be doing Panama Canal cruises.........

Not just these ships, the Voyager and Freedom Class ships are way to big either. A lot of the newer cruiseships are too big for the Panama Canal. Ships will be bigger and bigger, that's why the Panama Canal is going to grow too in a couple of years.

It's interesting to note that when the locks in the Canal were constructed, the largest ships in the world at that time were 1/10th the size of the locks. People were upset that such large (read expensive) locks were being built. After all, the locks are 1000 feet long, by 110 feet wide. These things were gargantuan back then.

If there really is expansion in the works, that's a good thing I suppose. Although it will be a long and expensive project.

The Navy is currently constructing the next class of aircraft carrier, CVN 21 (although hull numbers will begin with CVN 78). These ships will be 1092 feet long, by 134 feet wide, and displace over 100,000 tons. Too large to fit into the locks currently. The first ship of this class (hull number CVN 78) is to be placed into service for fiscal year 2015. I would assume that the Panama Canal locks enlargement will be completed by then, but we'll see.

Isn't it cool that something built so long ago is projected to continue serving so long into the future?

Mike there is a THIRD freedom class with no name .I thinkthats what they are referring to.Do you know the name of that one?

No, "220,000 tons" is NOT a typo -- and neither are "5,400 passengers" and "1,180 feet."

The U. S. Navy now lists the "bird farms" of the Nimitz class actually as displacing about 103,000 tons at full (combat) load. These ships also are too big to transit the Panama Canal.

That said, there were tankers in excess of half a million tons when I was in college, back in the 1970's.

No, but cruise lines have been building so-called "post-Panamax" vessels for nearly a decade. MV Grand Princess (109,000 tons, 2600 passengers) was the first. The largest cruise ships that can fit through the Panama Canal (so-called "Panamax" vessels) displace about 95,000 tons.

Many shipyards may handle the size, but very few have the knowledge.

Important to note: There is a difference between displacement when talking about air craft carriers and tankers versus the interior volume of cruise ships. For example, the Voyager class have an interior volume of 138,000 tons. Who knows what their actual displacement is??? I think is is far less than 138,000. Roland? Norm? I guess I can try to find it...

I read "Supertankers" awhile back and it was written in the 70's about how dangerous those ships were. They had drafts close to 90 feet, some of them.

Here is the answer to my own question. The QM2, for example, has gross tonnage of 151,000 but displacement of only 76,000 tons. It is alo longer and with a deepr draft than the Freedom so one could assume the Freedom has less displacement unless the hull bottom is more flat than QM2.

Tonnage: 151,400 gross tons
Displacement: 76,000 tonnes (approx)
Length: 345 m (1,132 ft)
Beam: 41 m (135 ft) waterline, 45 m (147.5 ft) extreme (bridge wings)
Draft: 10 m (32 ft 10 in)
Height: 72 m (236.2 ft) keel to funnel (includes 17 passenger decks)
Power: 157,000 horsepower (117 MW) GE LM2500+ gas turbine/diesel electric plant
Propulsion: Four 21.5 MW pods: 2 fixed and 2 azimuthing
Speed: approximately 30 knots (56 km/h)
Complement: 2,620 passengers, 1,253 officers and crew
Cost: UK £460 million (approx US $800 million)

You & I have the same idea--just read a long article on Freedom of the Seas with photos & my first reaction was that it resembled a floating mall! I really hope these 4000 plus passenger beasts are not in any port I travel to-- (although I confess we are taking a weekend trip on QM2 for Labor day--hope she is not like a big malll....)
