Default Crazy Flights when booking on Royal

We received "free" air when booking our cruise to OZ through RCCL. I just received the email of our tentative flight info. Is it common when booking air through the cruiselines to be taken over the back roads? We are leaving Minneapolis then to Houston for a layover and then to LAX and then we get on Quantis to Syndney. On the way home we go from Syndney to LAX to O'hare (which is actually closer to home, but our car will be in St. Paul) to MSP. Is this usual? I expected a flight from MSP to LAX or San Francisco but not to Texas, what gives. Any other crazy iteneriaries when booking air through the cruise line?

Thanks,
Jenne

I have never book air through the cruise line. But on my Alaska trip next summer I booked air through Carnival. I am going San Diego to Ancorage then Vancover to San Diego. So it should be interesting how my flight will go

I've never booked air with a cruise before either. I usually find better deals on my own, but when I researched this cruise, I wasn't able to do better. So far, I not much of a fan of letting the cruiseline book my air.

Default Call em

Call em back quickly and explain. Flying to Australia is really a long one and you don't need any extra stress especially being incorrectly routed. Good Luck and have a wonderful cruise, I love Sydney-so easy to get around. Su!

Hope you have a great time!

One would think that the cruiselines would get the best air times/flights available being the price is higher then getting air yourself.

This is another arena where having a good T/A comes in handy. All that needs to be done is to find competitive flights that you would prefer and contact air/sea department. They should replace their proposed itinerary with those flights (if available since airline inventory can change rapidly).

They used to offer a deviation fee of $50 to $75 to get direct flights. We have used this many times to get direct flights as I do not like to fly and I want as few take-offs and landings as possible.
If you are using a TA they should be able to handle it for you or call the cruise line direct. Prices may have changed with all thats going on, but it's worth checking out.

See if you can change it. Go to any travel site (Yahoo Travel for instance) and go to the flight section & enter in the flying info.

See what kind of flights you get. Then if they are better, call the cruise line & tell them, "Well on this site I found these flights"

Key thing - be nice! You'll get more with honey....

And as a customer service rep, the nice folks get everything, the nasty ones don't.

On this cruise I am going to Alaska and it was cheaper to book the air through Carnival then it was with someone else.

In my experience, this has always been a commom problem..get you wherever, via the most circuitous routes, and drive the customer crazy....As mentioned, do you research, and then call your ta to handle them

As a "P.S." to those of you who shop these things......the cruise lines may (almost) always be more expensive but there is a HUGE exception. This is the "open jaw" trip (arive in one city and depart another, as in Syndney/Auckland).

Shopping and comparing is always part of the adventure so hope this helps someone, Robbie

Thanks Cruisemates Posters,

I took your advice and called my travel agent - she will contact Royal and ask if this can be adjusted. She said they will email with alternatives of which I can chose or reject.

We are traveling on the busiest day of the year, the Sunday after Thanksgiving and I feel the more stops the more chance we are going to miss our cruise in Syndney. It would be a shame to miss the boat after traveling so far to take this cruise.

It depends where you live when it comes to air deals. We always book with cruiseline because its the cheapest. And if there are delays, you call their special #, no matter where you are, and they redirect to get you going so you won't miss the ship. And if you do miss it, they fly you to the next port-of-call.
Yes RC is notorious for having multiple connections. Thats how they get the cheapest flights. On our way to San Juan from Vanxouver... Salt Lake City, Atlanta. We're doing a Mexico cruise and were surprised with the flight schedule....stop in Seattle. And on our way home...stop in San Fran & Seattle. And its only suppose to be a 2 3/4 hr trip, but had turn into a 4 hr trip.
Your TA gets your flight arrngement 2 months prior to sail date, so they should contact you at that time to ask if you would like a 'deviation'. If you choose this, there is a $50/person fee. IMHO, the extra fee isn't worth it...as long as I get there somehow to enjoy my CRUISE!!!
