Default Cruise on crutches?

So I have the option of getting my acl surgery roughly 3-4 weeks before my September 25th cruise, or waiting until after. I'm working with no acl right now, and I'll probably be limping until I get my surgery. I'm really eager to get the surgery, and I just don't know if a 4 day cruise is worth me waiting another month for this long awaited surgery. My question is, if after a few weeks of therapy, I still have to use crutches to get around, is a cruise on crutches an absolute nightmare? I would rather crutch around for 4 days on the ship than have to wait until October for my surgery and be absolutely useless for my favorite month of the year. I'm 29 and very active, and this will be my first cruise and first major surgery! The timing could not have been any worse!

Thatsabigship,

Welcome to Cruisemates!

Wow .... this is an awful way to begin a first cruise.
Getting around a ship can be a chore with any sort of physical ailment simply b/c the ship's are big (like your name suggests!).

I have a few questions:
Who are you sailing with?
Is this a special occasion or just a fun getaway?
How much pain are you in right now?
Have you discussed this with your doctor?

Will you be in a cast post operation? Why? because the bathrooms are small and its going to be a chore taking a shower (no baths).

Thanks for the welcome! Yea, quite a bummer for my first one.

I'm cruising with my GF, her boss and wife, and a bunch of their friends. It's not really a special occasion.....Just my 30th birthday, but not really a big deal.

Walking long distances right now gets to be a little painful. I use my crutches when I know I have to get around a good bit. I found out that a job I'm working on at the moment can't be installed until 3 or 4 weeks, so that would only give me about 3 weeks of rehab before my trip. That really isn't enough time before taking a trip like that.

So it's looking like I'll be having the surgery right when I get back from the cruise.(Talk about coming back to reality after a vacation!)

And Dina, no cast after surgery, just knee braces.

I cruised once with a removal cast. Can you use something like that? I had no problems that way and actually found the shower wasn't too bad to use. I could keep the foot mostly out of the shower through the shower curtain. Made the bathroom wetter but it worked.

What do you mean not a big deal?! :o

30th birthday is very big deal! Take it from someone who has had several 30th birthdays! Each and everyone of them was special.

You'll be fine getting around the ship, just slower than everyone else. Take the elevators. You might find that crutches get you preferred treatment. The only problems I forsee for you are in the ports which can be a lot of walking (do you have excursions planned?) and the MusterDrill which can have you standing on deck for 20+minutes (bring the crutches --- hope these get you a chair).

I am not sure I would want to cruise w/ my DH's boss and their friends. I'd feel like I had to be on my very best behavior

Enjoy your cruise and come back afterward to let us know how you made out.

Ha ha! Thanks WildRover! I said no big deal, but I'm really just trying to forget that I'm leaving my 20's behind for good!

As far as being on my best behavior? Her boss is a riot! If I tried to be on my best behavior I would stick out like a sore thumb! They are a wild bunch!

I've been going back and forth in my head on what to do, and I think I'm just going to have the surgery in October. What's another month I guess. And I really do want to enjoy my first cruise!
