the straw market has something for everyone. Mainly there are crafts made by the locals and t-shirts and novelty items.

Look your items over real well in the Strar Market in Nassau, before you purchase them. I found a bunch of items from different booths that were very dirty and dusty.

Shelby --

IMHO the straw market sells junk. The people are pushy to the point of being rude, & the place is jammed. They all sell basically the same touristy garbage: shot glasses, carvings (made in Asia), cheap "carribean clothing" that will shred to rags after one washing, t-shirts again that will shred, and other stuff you'll never use that says Bahamas on it. A lot of the stuff is very dusty.

I really hate that place. However, my SO's 15 year old loved haggling w/ the vendors .

They had moved the straw market when we were there. It was in a "warehouse" type setting. Very confining, hot, dirty & pushy people. Alot of junk that you could get at other places with "just the name changed on the item" We went down 2 rows & got out! (1 going in & going out!) yuck! We found other stuff to do in Nassau.

Take a taxi over to the Atlantis resort. I did the ferry, but the boats are old and the lines long, it's faster by taxi.

Atlantis has an aquarium but you can see the fish and stingrays for free by going into the resort.

It's a nice place to spend a few hours then on the way back go down Nassau's main street. They had some nice shops on the main street.

I didn't buy anything in Nassau because we went to St. Maartan and St. Thomas and did my shopping there.

I'm glad someone else feels the same I do about that place. When my friends and I were there we had a man CHASE us , screamming and yelling at us about "you Americans...." and we did not do or say anything to this man, he was mad because we had looked at his wares but did not buy anything. It was very scary!

Last year, my daughter and I were approached by vendors on the streets that were very rude. When we got to the straw market, we couldn't wait to leave. They were extremely rude, pushy and followed us around. This upset and scared my daughter and I didn't buy anything. This year I'm taking two cruises and both stop at Nassau. I will enjoy the staying on the ships. They also followed us around to braid her hair. There is a braiding center near the ship that you can haggle a little with.

There are better ports to shop at than Nassau.

Our first cruise to Nassau we actually stayed on the ship, but the second time we went over to Paradise Island and then walked the main street just to see what there was.

No big deal for shopping. Now St. Thomas...that's another story.
