Default Tahitian Pearls?

We will be sailing in French Polynesia this fall...any recommendations as to where to get the best deals on Tahitian pearls and/jewlery? Thanks for any assistance.

Strangely enough, "shopping" is not high on the list of activities in this part of the world because it is still fairly uncivilized. I would guess the best spot is in Papeete (main city in Tahiti) in some of the jewelry stores there. I doubt if any of the other island even have many options unless you can get in some of the resort hotels, but then they might be over-priced.

at the dock in Moorea there are booths set up. One of them has lovely pearls. also in papeete there is a place with tons of them. make sure you know what size, shape and color you want or the selection will drive you crazy.

Default Papeete has many

From my experience, Papeete is a fun place to shop. There are all kinds of little stores. And, tons of pearls. But, you'd think with so many pearls in the South Pacific that they’d be really cheap, and I guess they are cheaper than in the States, but they are NOT cheap!

I bought a few loose pearls to bring home back in 2000.

I learned that the pearls are actually "started" on racks in the Mississippi and then sent over to Tahiti to finish growing in the clean water.
