Default Pre-cruise shopping in Galveston

What's the best place to pick up our "fine wine" before our cruise? I know Texas has some different laws regarding sale of alcohol. In California Long's Drugstore usually has some of the best prices, but wasn't sure if there were restrictions on where alcohol is sold in Texas. Also, is there any problem purchasing it on a Sunday? We can, of course, go on Monday morning before we board the Ecstasy, but I am pretty sure my husband will want to pick up a few beers to have at the hotel Sunday night.
Also, on a different note, does anyone know where we could purchase James Avery jewelry in Galveston or on the way to/from Hobby Airport? I had some things from there that were stolen when my home was burglarized a few years ago. I know I can order online, but thought it would be fun to purchase some jewelry in Texas if I could while I was there. TIA!

Hi,

I live in Houston. Your best bet, IMO, is to stop at Spec's, preferably the downtown store on Smith Street for your purchases. It is the largest liquor store I have ever seen. Near impossible to beat their prices. There are over 20 neighborhood Spec's stores, so if downtown is not convenient try one of them. I work in the wine marketing world and do business with Spec's, but don't represent them!

Marne: Thanks for the reply. We were in Galveston before our cruise on August 21. I actually picked up my wine at Wal-Mart, they had some inexpensive Australian wines that I like (Yellowtail, etc.) But I am curious where Specs is in relation to the cruise terminal, I didn't see anything that looked like a big liquor store. Is the Strand district considered downtown? We stayed at the Harbor House, but had a rental car so were able to head over to Wal-Mart that morning to pick up a few things.
